All crime docs are about men killing women!

I was trying to find somehing to watch on Netflix last night. Looked at crime documentaries. They're all about men killing women. Or men killing children.

I like a bit of true crime sometimes, but it's actually too much. What the hell have we been putting up with over decades and centuries! There was a guest on Steven Bartletts Diary of a CEO who said the most dangerous person to a woman is her husband! I believe it. We've taken this shit for too long.

And most of the dramas too.
I frequently get to a place where I can’t watch this anymore.
I know it reflects reality though and am in two minds if showing so much of it normalises or highlights the issue.

IHaveDefectedToTeamDog · 16/03/2025 11:34

"True crime" is gonna show true crime; the vast majority of which is men killing men, men killing women or men killing children. If anyone is ever killed by a complete stranger it's always a woman or child being killed by a man.
Of course there will be exceptions, but only a small amount.

Maitri108 · 16/03/2025 11:36

There was a movement recently in crime fiction and there's now a prize for the best crime novel that doesn't have a female victim.

Meadowfinch · 16/03/2025 11:36

Two of the Strike books/episodes have female murderers. Out of seven.

That's a greater percentage than in real life.

Very leveling of JKRowling. 🤗

MiniPumpkin · 16/03/2025 11:36

Unfortunately more crimes are committed by men. Approx 2 women are murdered by men per week in uk, so that’s lots of stories for writers.
it’s awful op, but that’s the reality

Bruisername · 16/03/2025 11:38

Agree but in drama I always find myself rolling my eyes when it is often a woman murderer because it is so unusual. Eg Vera, Death in Paradise etc etc

GreyAreas · 16/03/2025 11:46

So much focus on the threat of violence on the streets, and yet so much violence happens in the home or within institutions that are supposed to protect.

CHEESEY13 · 16/03/2025 11:49

Even in the 21st Century, the overwhelming attitudes towards women are way, way centuries back.

Women were (and still are) possessions. How many times have men been tried for murder of a partner and ultimately they will say "If can't have her then nobody will!"

And, of course, the despicably brutal Henry VIII disposing of two wives by beheading: one because she had a daughter and another because she was reputed to be unfaithful.

And only very recently there was the case of the ex-boyfriend shooting a mother and two daughters with a crossbow because he was angry that one of them finished with him.

What IS wrong with men? And I mean really wrong?

We are still posessions and prey.
We have these bodies that make us vulnerable.
We have this built-in sense of caring, giving and responsibility.

I've seen so many men collapse without a woman by their side. They've turned toxic, self-destructive, exploitative, bitter.. It's almost like we are the energy they all need to stay alive. Like they can't stay good and productive without using a woman.

Maybe going a bit too far there, but it's all fucked up.

We just finished watching all of the past episodes of the Murder Trial BBC series (very good), but we talked about this same thing last night: 1st was young female murdered by older male ‘carer’, 2nd was female murdered by her partner, 3rd was female murdered by her ex husband, 4th was teenage girl murdered by her boyfriend (and his friends)…

Monwmum · 16/03/2025 15:10

Time for there to be an entirely separate crime of Femicide to enable accurate statistics. These are mostly hate crimes against women and we need to understand them a separate entity in order to change anything. Of course it's not all men....I know and love some wonderful men, but clearly there is something very wrong somewhere with how a lot of men view women...just look Giselle Pelicot....

Planesmistakenforstars · 16/03/2025 15:28

I share the frustration, and agree with your and others' points. But if you are looking for other true crime media, there has been a big shift away from this in the true crime podcasting world, which is now saturated by scams and con artist crimes. I think podcasts tend to lead the way in recent times in this genre, so I assume this will filter through into TV documentaries.

Anchorage56 · 16/03/2025 15:33

So what do you propose be done about it?

Happyinarcon · 16/03/2025 15:34

If you look at the crime statistics each year there seem to be over twice as many male victims as women. I guess men killing men doesn’t make for a good podcast

My take on this: Men killing women, children, each other and animals 🙄

You are obviously a man 💯

What i want is men to stop being violent. I want the society to stop enabling and excusing abuse. I want women and children being able to walk around and exist in the world without a threat of being killed, raped, trafficked, exploited and abused.

At the risk of being shouted at, how can this be achieved?

There was a study where it was shown 4% of men committed violent crime and of that it was 1% who committed the majority of crimes (persistent offenders). So that leaves at least 96% of men as men who dont commit violent crime.

Shouted at by who? Me?
Do you have any suggestions yourself?
I think first step is to talk about it. To not pretend anymore that this is not the case. Stop bringing up the odd female murderer/abuser to try invalidate this huge global problem. Stop saying 'not all men' and turn a blind eye. Believe women when they indicate that they are afraid/abused/controlled.

Honestly? I think it normalises it and, more than that, I think some men enjoy watching it.
