To be disgusted at the talks between Russia and the US

1000 replies

SunnyDayInFeb · 17/02/2025 08:58

So Russia and the US are meeting in Saudia Arabia to carve up Ukraine.

And Ukraine, whose people have been fighting and dying since their country was invaded, haven't even been invited to the table.

It's like we are back in the 19th century with the European colonial powers drawing lines on a map to divide Africa between them.

Here is Trump's truth social post

https://bsky.app/profile/alexmassie.bsky.social/post/3ljazw23qi226

tldr

[Zelensky] disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Sadcafe · 28/02/2025 19:46

Didn’t see Zelenskyy disrespecting anyone, saw a vile, arrogant, aggressive vice president who has zero diplomacy and a disrespectful president who thinks he is always right, can you imagine Starmer calling Sunak an idiot prime minister. The world is certainly not a safe place with these two megalomaniacs running the US

ForestAtTheSea · 28/02/2025 20:02

The issue with the press heckling Zelenskyy about his choice of dress:
They must have lived under a rock to not know the clothing is symbolical; he did it from day 1 of the war. Or maybe they do know that and were just bullying.
Also Elon Musk does not wear a suit - as we've seen from recent photos; he wore a T-Shirt and some sort of jacket. Did they heckle him, too?

Already the introduction by Trump, along the lines of: it will be very difficult for me to mediate, as this guy next to me has so much hate for Putin - really? I wonder how that happened. This was in no way neutral, it was a set-up and they've expected him to come crawling. Also the "facts" by Trump were often wrong - on CNN there is a running factcheck about the numbers.

I wonder though, will the US now pull the plug on everything?
However, Trump has totally blown the last shred of anyone thinking he is a diplomat.

Llttledrummergirl · 28/02/2025 21:13

According to recent changes, the press in the oval office are hand picked sycophants trying to look cool in front of chief bully.

MushMonster · 28/02/2025 21:21

Great opportunity for JD to promote his boss that was missed, resulting in this shit show.
He could have replied to Zelensky with "We know, the leaders of the past were not strong enough to keep to those agreements. We will get this done, we want it sorted"
Trump would have not missed this chance, that Zelensky handed on a platter.
But JD had the idiotic idea of belittling Zelensky and try to portray him as a loser, begger. Helped by Trump?!?!?!?!

You cannot make this up!

To me, Trump seems to be fully allied with Putin. Therefore, not with Europe, but against Europe. I think he needs to think about this one twice, to be honest.
I mean, he is there sitting by Zelensky saying something on the lines "well I cannot say bad things about Putin and then call him saying I want a deal, you know...", while he did that very thing to Zelensky.

MushMonster · 28/02/2025 21:26

Also, the chaotic press conference. Why don't they give the turn to ask questions in order? Instead of fighting each other and so talking over each other. And introduce the news media they are asking for? I am pretty sure they should to shout The Times here, then ask questions.

Apparently, some fashion magazine was in today. That was disgusting!

ForestAtTheSea · 28/02/2025 21:29

They weren't even letting him finish his sentences, after Vance agreed Zelenskyy could comment. Trump immediatly waded in after Zelenskyy tried to explain how any country would react if its borders were violated. He desperately tried to give him them the overview of events since 2014, since apparently no-one in the whole administration ever got this information through to their world leader. Trump even interjected with "2015?" and he looked like he never heard of the information before. His memory can't be that good anymore.

I wonder if what Zelenskyy wanted to say was: I hope it won't happen but how would you feel if someone brought war to your border, and maybe hinting at Alaska. However, Trump was immediatly not letting Zelenskyy finish, and that was the point were things escalated. It was the US which caused this.

How could any politician sit there and have spread lies in front of the press and everyone, lies worthy of North Korea?

Regarding the "Thank you", at what point could he have said that, he didn't even get a word in. But he said it plenty of times before and would likely have done it today as well.

The next time a state visitor comes to the White House, perhaps they should inform them beforehand that they expect their feet to be kissed as the first activity.

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 28/02/2025 22:59

Trump saying Zelensky has a hatred for Putin is it any wonder when thousands of Ukrainians have been killed in a needless war.
That would be like asking America to have a love in with Alqueda it wouldn't for very obvious reasons.

To American mumsnetters out there, how is this being reported in the states? Is it a majority shocked by Trump or fairly even each way? Each hard to know as newspapers and tv are over there are very partisan. Over in Britain - we are appalled by Trump

RingoJuice · 01/03/2025 09:16

Depends. Lot of focus on Zelensky pushing for a security guarantee that was never going to happen.

tbh it is pointless working with Zelensky if he’s going to insist on more concrete American support. Unlike Europeans we really don’t care about the integrity of the Ukrainian border.

Time for Europe to step up. Sacrifice your children for their cause.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 09:50

This critical minerals deal is already agreed with Russia in all likelihood. Putin wants Zelenskyy out and this is how the US does it.

Russian media invited by "accident" to see the show.

It was not an accident. As was Vance's intervention which was calculated to inflame matters.

Both the US and Putin want rid of Zelenskyy.

There's a thoughtful and well balanced piece from CNN if it helps: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/28/politics/trump-zelensky-vance-oval-office/index.html

As for "reaction", obviously nobody can speak for the entire US but among the people I know it's largely split by political allegiance, with the usual situation of some thinking Trump can do no wrong and others unable to get over the fact he was elected ... not unlike this thread

How many Americans have died for Ukraine’s cause? 15 British volunteers have already died there.

Goodness, you're so hostile, so angry, why do you come on Mumsnet, a British based forum that for a very long time has been known to be liberal minded to state this hateful noise. What is wrong with getting along with fellow human beings.

Yes, probably but maybe we can influence them to look for better, to be less cynical about humanity.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 12:30

Come on they are probably someone paid, middled aged, opinions staged. Don't waste your breath.

Last century they would have been all reds under the bed and the Euros are fags. It's just the latest version. You don't owe them civilities that they don't give themselves

👏well said

I'd have slightly more respect for them if they were being paid, tbh.

Imagine being that awful for free.

They were on here recently, under a different name, claiming to be a retired general..

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 17:04

The Russian American general has still been active on another thread today.

The "journalist" who asked the question is the boyfriend of a particularly batshit Republican.

ForestAtTheSea · 01/03/2025 17:42

@DdraigGoch yes, meanwhile I saw some more news reports where it was mentioned. But still, why would anyone say that? Would they heckle foreign visitors who wear a traditional dress, like Premier Modi?
Here he was visiting recently, not in a suit!

btw, the former US ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, who is now working at Stanford said that Vance voted against military aid to Ukraine, so he isn't quite sure what he would be thanking him for.
An interesting read here:
