To be disgusted at the talks between Russia and the US

1000 replies

SunnyDayInFeb · 17/02/2025 08:58

So Russia and the US are meeting in Saudia Arabia to carve up Ukraine.

And Ukraine, whose people have been fighting and dying since their country was invaded, haven't even been invited to the table.

It's like we are back in the 19th century with the European colonial powers drawing lines on a map to divide Africa between them.

Factchecking Donald Trump’s claims about the war in Ukraine

As US-Russia talks continue in Saudi Arabia, we look at the US president’s misleading and outright false statements

He is conveniently picking and choosing when “America first” suits him.

I understand what the MAGA crew think freedom of speech is. I was asking you how Europe is apparently against free speech, like you said.

Catsandcheese · 19/02/2025 16:21

Now he is claiming Zelensky is a traitor!

And a dictator

Catsandcheese · 19/02/2025 16:29

Sorry you are correct, it was a dictator, @bemoresloth

That’s a good article in the Guardian

PandoraSox · 19/02/2025 16:50

Coming from a man who would love to be a dictator.

Janey Godley was right. Trump is a cunt.

(Awaits telling off).

We are about as far from world peace right now as we've ever been. I think we are heading towards a world war, where the world's megalomaniacs fight it out to put their flag on the pile of rubble that remains. These people will think nothing of spilling the blood of ordinary men women and children, as it's already happening. Not sure who the UK's friends are anymore. USA sees UK as a tiny backwater indebted to them, and we've upset most of Europe by Brexit and that pathetic display of 'patriotism'. We are utterly alone now in this aren't we!

I agree we are very far from world peace and I am beginning to wonder if it will ever be achievable. I'm sure if aliens exist and they did find us and wanted to take over this planet one of the megalomaniacs would be cosying up to them.

Yes we in the UK are utterly alone, I have to agree with this, but although I was pro-remain and voted that way, I felt somewhat alone whilst we were still in there .It did often feel as if it was the UK against the rest of the EU - maybe just me.

Why would you get a telling off?

Other than the fact it's inaccurate

He lacks the depth and warmth !!!!!

It's a very blunt game he's playing.

Having Russia more on his side is going to help him with the Middle East and Iran though.

Jandapanda · 19/02/2025 17:45

Political election is always about money and power. In Ukraine is about who finances the candidate. The country's political direction is 'dictated' by where monies coming from, how and who would benefit from that political direction. In Ukrainian history it's always been between proRussia or proUS/Europe. You are delusional if you think Ukraines president is the 'chosen' one. Never been, is not now and will not be as suggested by trump. The only reason he is saying it, is because he is changing US approach to this situation and needs new president for Ukraine to agree with this new way of how it's going to go and to ensure people of Ukraine are suppressed effectively within. US encouraged this war and without US support zelensky would have never had a chance to even respond to this war. Thats why Russians just walked into Ukraine and thought there will be no resistance. On its own Ukraine had no chance.
It is all a political game, never about people and what they deserve so it's never about who they choose to be a president. US change in approach dictates the time for a new Ukrainian puppet. Zelensky is raging because he was encouraged to do one thing and now being blamed for doing exactly that plus anger from his nation for deaths of young men and displaced families. At least he didn't run away under the pressure of all this

AlternativeView · 19/02/2025 18:34

I think the best stragety for zelensky right now is dignified responses and even silence.

Be silent and dignified while one country invades your country and another country steals your resources.

AlternativeView · 19/02/2025 18:40

Brilliant guy on lbc right now talking about this

AlternativeView · 19/02/2025 18:45

@JoyousGreyOrca oh sorry that wasn't clear. I mean in response to trumps latest claims

Sadcafe · 19/02/2025 19:37

Honestly think Trump is a greater threat to Europe and the UK than Putin. He seems to live in a world where everything he says is correct, even when it’s not and flies into a rage if challenged

Erm, and once they've done that, what do you think Russia will do next? Sit and celebrate and stop?

Nope, Putin will come for the UK. And again, there is no USA to stop him.

Yes, the UK is very isolated. And we have no decent sized military.

Putin would have to conquer the whole of the rest of Europe to get to us. I don't think that is his aim, is it? Does he have any interest in the UK? It is not as though we are a major player now.

I suppose he could just nuke us, but I doubt that will happen.

Resources and the banking industry are always interesting to a dictator. But more importantly, Putin wants to recover the USSR and avenge the humiliations of the loss of it during the Cold War. The UK has been an ally of the USA…the special relationship, so….

There is a good history book called the Meaning of Hitler which describes the personality of a megalomaniac, and there is a summary of it on Wikipedia. It is salutary if sobering reading.

I agree Putin wants to remake the USSR, which is why I don't think he would bother with the rest of Europe. But who knows what is in his crazy mind.

Well, large portions of Eastern Europe—including more than 22 million people were behind the iron curtain. Places like Estonia and Armenian seceded from the USSR. Dictators do seem to have an insatiable need for power. We are living in very dangerous times.

I daresay Putin would like to, but can he really afford to fight a war on multiple fronts? He apparently thought the war in Ukraine would be over quickly, with a coup happening within days. He wasn’t expecting to be fighting a costly war of attrition three years later.

The trouble with being a dictator and ruling by fear is that people are afraid to tell you the truth. Also, as your people can’t vote you out of power, there’s always the risk that they’ll assassinate you. So dictators tend to become very paranoid.

Hitler continued his disastrous incursion into Russia for far too long because no one dared to tell him how badly it was going. Towards the end of the war, Hitler was paranoid enough to appoint staff to key positions based on their perceived loyalty, not their ability.

Putin is said to be paranoid about the West and to want a buffer of neutral (puppet?) states between Russia and the rest of Europe. This paranoia seems misplaced to me - I didn’t think the West had any intention of invading Russia.

However, according to the book Prisoners of Geography, Putin’s main reason for wanting Crimea was to gain a port which doesn’t freeze over in winter.
