To believe that eating meat should be illegal?

The environmental damage and animal cruelty outweighs the cultural or personal benefits. AIBU to think it’s time to outlaw meat production?

Are you ok?

CasperGutman · 10/02/2025 09:36

From a purely logical standpoint I can see the argument. You're not unreasonable to think a ban could be beneficial. But it's a very, very deeply embedded cultural practice that's widely accepted in our society. It's not going to be banned any time soon and you would be unreasonable to expect it to be.

LaundryPond · 10/02/2025 09:36

Well, it’s ethically indefensible, sure, unless you’re hunting and /or raising and slaughtering your own humanely, but I think it would take a huge amount of time to dismantle.

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 09:38

I wish. Dairy, too. I think we need a hard push to move everyone towards a plant-based diet, education is needed.

CalicoPusscat · 10/02/2025 09:39

I don't eat meat but don't think this is feasible. People will always eat meat.

Moonmelodies · 10/02/2025 09:39

What should be done with all the farm animals?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/02/2025 09:39

No thanks.

Animals taste nice, and nothing touches the sides of a minging hangover like a greasy fry-up full of animal parts.

I've tried every meat-substitute/plant-derived sausage/bacon/haggis product on the market, and none of them get close to the real thing.

Sorry animals, you're cute, fuzzy, loveable and stuff, but you're also delicious on a morning roll and covered in HP Sauce, so off to the slaughterhouse you go...

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 09:39

While I'd love for that to happen, it will take a long time. People are stubborn, and have cognitive dissonance. And some people plain don't care about animals.

I'd raise the price on meat and dairy, and subsidise vegan food - fruit and vegetables should be a lot cheaper than they are.

What should be done with all the farm animals?

Really? We'd just stop breeding them.

Never better! You?

If meat were banned, you would see a massive black market, an increase in hunting but with zero regulations, followed by major ecological disaster as whole species were eradicated. Also a huge increase in food poisoning from unregulated unhygienic meat. Humans are omnivores. They can choose to be vegan, but you can't make them not be omnivores.

It's a ridiculous and unworkable idea.

BlondiePortz · 10/02/2025 09:42

Does this include any food bees are used in the process?

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/02/2025 09:42

i’m very sympathetic to vegetarianism. But although most forms of meat farming are environmentally disastrous, production methods of many meat substitutes as well as certain vegetables eg avocados, is extraordinarily un-environmentally friendly too. So Yabu

the biggest problem of all at the moment is deforestation to provide land for cattle to graze. That absolutely should be outlawed and we should all pay more for beef which is sustainably and ethically sourced. Same goes for all kinds of meat.

LaundryPond · 10/02/2025 09:43

Moonmelodies · 10/02/2025 09:39

What should be done with all the farm animals?

Slaughter. All carnivores get one last blow out.

5128gap · 10/02/2025 09:43

No. I'm vegan and its absolutely the right decision for me, aligning with my health and ethical views. However I accept that there are opposing arguments. Its unfortunately not as simple as outlawing it in the interests of animal welfare, as there are economic, environmental and health impacts to take into account and the issue had not been sufficiently researched, or such a huge change planned for and risk assessed.

Starlightstarbright4 · 10/02/2025 09:44

Nope I think we should ban vegans preaching how we should eat .

They’d probably be thrilled not to be farm animals anymore to be honest.

All right, Goady McGoadface

Cattenberg · 10/02/2025 09:45

I really hope this happens one day. I know several self-professed animal lovers who regularly eat meat and I sometimes wonder how they live with the cognitive dissonance.

Is this what Morrissey meant when he compared meat eaters to pedophiles? That it doesn't matter how much suffering is caused by someone's actions, the pleasure trumps all? Its certainly provocative

LavenderFields7 · 10/02/2025 09:46

I think the technology to be able to reproduce “meat” in the lab has to be fully developed and economically viable first. Then yes, I think eating animals will be outlawed. One day we will look back and see ourselves as barbarians killing animals and keeping them locked up the way we do 😔

BlondiePortz · 10/02/2025 09:46

BySpoonyBlueScroller · 10/02/2025 09:44

They’d probably be thrilled not to be farm animals anymore to be honest.

So all the animals would be killed because farmers wouldn't have any use for them, they would cost money to keep so would just be slaughtered

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 10/02/2025 09:46

LaundryPond · 10/02/2025 09:43

Slaughter. All carnivores get one last blow out.

And what about actual carnivores - animals that genuinely eat nothing but meat? No more lions or tigers and others?

Cats would cease to exist if owners were no longer allowed to feed them meat and they were banned from hunting wild animals themselves. Dogs wouldn't be very happy either.

tropicalroses · 10/02/2025 09:46

There's a huge amount of land in the UK that is only suitable for grazing and couldn't be productive otherwise. Food security would be even more precarious, you'd need to increase imports, that would have an impact on global food prices putting pressure on the poorest globally and increasing CO2 emissions from transport.

GoldMoon · 10/02/2025 09:47

I've been veggie 20 years , and of course I'd like more people on board with the idea of not eating animals.
But no , that idea would never work , and will never be put in place.
I think people should come to their own conclusion they want to stop / or even have meat free days .
A total ban / outlaw . No it would never work .
