To believe that eating meat should be illegal?

The environmental damage and animal cruelty outweighs the cultural or personal benefits. AIBU to think it’s time to outlaw meat production?

I'd rather go to an early grave via UPFs than be complicit in eating the corpses of slaves.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 10/02/2025 10:17

I'm vegan, and I'd be delighted if more people were, but making it illegal wouldn't work.
There would be massive resistance to it, as you can see from the replies here.

RoWTok · 10/02/2025 10:17

I wish vegans showed this much passion in advocating for the rights of humans who are involved in the production of their fancy plant based foods. Have you seen the damage that processing cashew does to hands? Blisters, burns, rashes.

“The cashew industry relies on a brutal manufacturing process to bring its products to market, including the forced labour and the exploitation of children."

"The vast majority of the global production of cashew nuts is processed in India and Vietnam. Despite reports of the horrendous working conditions that exist in many of these factories, there has been very little auditing or certification of the plants, and virtually no accountability throughout the industry.
The cashew plant comes from the same family as poison ivy and poison sumac. The shells contain anacardic acid, a naturally occurring chemical compound that is an extremely toxic chemical. When handled directly, it can cause severe irritation and burns to the skin. For this reason, cashews, unlike other nuts, cannot be sold in their shell. They are removed by hand, and the mostly female workers are rarely supplied with protective gloves, as it slows down work and can increase expenses. The smoke from processing is also toxic and can harm workers’ lungs."

Enjoy your cashew milk lattes 👌

Not if farmers stopped looking after them, feeding them, worming them, sheering them, paying for vets and hoof trimmers etc.. We couldn't just abandon farm animals - someone would need to care for them to end of life and the government would need to fund that!

I think some people believe that if they are not food then they will eat, sleep and reproduce and farmers and vets are not needed at all.
Apparently diseases and illnesses only exist in farm animals when they are to be eaten . And if left to live free they won't need help at all.
Which is handy as the cost to look after all the farm animals till they die naturally would be quite a lot and obviously then have to be paid for by the government. So taxes basically

aspidernamedfluffy · 10/02/2025 10:17

How is that going to work? Are we to have somebody standing with us 24/7 to ensure that we only eat veggie stuff? You can ban meat sales all you want....there's plenty of wildlife here in the countryside that would end up on someone's table without the need to buy it. If you want to see a rise in trapping/snaring/lamping (all of which are illegal but very hard to police as it is), then crack on with your ban.

I don't think even 1% of people in this country will be bothered to go do their own hunting and trapping. Maybe fishing will increase a bit, but I can't imagine most people could be bothered.

That’s a valid argument.

Morrisey though… 🙄

Ach, he's a free thinker. We need more of those.

They’d probably be thrilled not to be farm animals anymore to be honest.

You know they'll be eaten, right?

And if never bred, go extinct.

Comedycook · 10/02/2025 10:18

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 10:13

I feel it will be illegal within 100 years.

I think you're right.

It will suit those in power to have a weaker population to control.

You can bet your bottom dollar though that the elite will still be eating meat.

hamstersarse · 10/02/2025 10:18

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 10:17

Exactly, I actually don't think that meat-eaters all genuinely think this though - it's just a cheap shot like they think they can get us with a gotcha!
My diet is predominantly whole foods, plant-based - loads of good fruit and veg. We barely ever have meat substitutes.

Where’s it all from? ✈️

LoganberryWay · 10/02/2025 10:12

All some people need is an iron or B12 supplement if they are having problems.

But if humans are not designed to eat meat why would people need this?

Not asking you specifically

Lentilweaver · 10/02/2025 10:19

AnonymousBleep · 10/02/2025 10:15

You still need protein, which isn't adequately provided by vegetables. If you're veggie you can eat eggs, which are a good source, but I think the lack of variation in the diet puts a lot of people off.

I get enough protein and iron from lentils, beans, eggs, dairy, seeds and nuts. As do millions of veggies from other cultures.

Lourdes12 · 10/02/2025 10:19

Veganism ruin so many people’s health, especially here in the north. It’s making people malnourished long term. You can see it in their faces and their protruding eyes. I will never go back to veganism or vegetarianism, it ruined me.

Snorlaxo · 10/02/2025 10:19

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 10:15

Perhaps it will be illegal to commodify animals both for meat and for company

Would working dogs be allowed under this theoretical regime ?

Narwhalsh · 10/02/2025 10:19

Let’s follow that up with forced sterilisation and discontinue the human race. Humans are the cause of climate change (at the rate it is going) and we are the source of the animal cruelty.

(I am of course being facetious)

Comedycook · 10/02/2025 10:20

I think lab grown meat will be available though....it's already being used in pet food I think? I'm sure I saw something about it on the news.

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 10:20

Snorlaxo · 10/02/2025 10:19

I think we're moving away from working dogs anyway, aren't we?

logicisall · 10/02/2025 10:20

Deforestation. As if that isn't going to happen after eating meat is banned and animals are no longer farmed BUT more arable land is needed for growing fruit and veg. @BySpoonyBlueScroller are you aware of what is happening in Mexico? #unholyguacamole #deforestation #climatechange

The UK isn't known for producing, you know, chickpeas and kidney beans etc as they need a longer growing season than we have. But let's ignore bee fertilisation and the air/sea miles used in transporting all the fruit and veg needed and make veganism great again.

Still think banning meat would be a good idea OP?

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 10:20

Lourdes12 · 10/02/2025 10:13

I don’t think you can substitute the nutrients in meat. Humans have always been eating meat, it’s part of the food chain. It’s our natural diet. Are we going to ban animals from eating their natural food too?! All this lab grown meat is unhealthy and disgusting

If that were true, how are vegans surviving? I have been vegan for over 25 years. My children are lifelong vegans, and thriving.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/02/2025 10:20

😂 thank you for the laugh. Making meat illegal to eat, pull the other one.

FiveWhatByFiveWhat · 10/02/2025 10:21

Cattenberg · 10/02/2025 09:45

I really hope this happens one day. I know several self-professed animal lovers who regularly eat meat and I sometimes wonder how they live with the cognitive dissonance.

I'm one of these I'm ashamed to say. I'm working on it, but it's a work in progress.

We've cut down on the meat we eat and try to be more aware of where it's coming from etc, but we haven't yet fully given up.

It's surprising how ingrained eating meat is and how difficult it was to think of alternatives some days. I'm also not really a fan of the "meatless meat" options as they just don't appeal to me at all, when I have a meat free day (which is often) I don't feel the need to pretend I'm eating bacon... but also when I do really want a bacon sandwich (rarely, but it's one of the few meat options I must admit I do really enjoy) I want an actual bacon sandwich.

I don't think making eating meat illegal will happen and I'm not sure it should to be honest. But I would fully support moves towards heavily reducing meat consumption - making people more aware of the process, stricter rules and regulations around animal treatment, moving away from massive industrial farms and deforestation for grazing etc.

liveandlearn73628 · 10/02/2025 10:21

No, many people need meat for health, weight control.

Nothungrycat · 10/02/2025 10:22

A world without milk and all its derivatives (cheese, yoghurt) might be a bit difficult, surely??

Lourdes12 · 10/02/2025 10:22

You do realise veganism destroy the environment a lot more than eating meat right?

TemporaryPosition · 10/02/2025 10:22

pointythings · 10/02/2025 09:49

Morrisey isn't an example for anyone to follow.

This is beyond childish and room temp IQ thinking. This place is such a playground at times.

A more mature approach would surely be to evaluate the argument itself? Not just reflexively oppose anything someone says because your tribal instincts are so overwhelming you can't help it. Hitler was a veggie who was keen on organic farming. Does this mean all veggies are nazis? Or we all need to eat the most wretchedly treated animals just to stick it to Hitler?
