To believe that eating meat should be illegal?

The environmental damage and animal cruelty outweighs the cultural or personal benefits. AIBU to think it’s time to outlaw meat production?

Cheap, mass produced meat should be curtailed and small local farms, with ethical farming practices should be encouraged. The cost implications would drive a reduction in overall consumption and the environmental impact would reduce. but outlawing meat altogether seems exceptionally unlikely

Oh yes. Having meat only available for the rich while the poor are priced out (while presumably being the ones farming, processing and selling the meat) is a wonderful and ethical plan.

I suppose you could cut out (cut up) the middle man as it were and just eat the underclass? Win win.

I agree. Our future selves will look back at the times when their forebears killed living animals and then ripped off their skin, chopped them up and sold them as food as barbaric. The practice will be viewed similarly to how we think of cannibalism or human sacrifice today, ie abhorrent.

IDK... I bet the OP would taste quite nice if her wish to ban animal meat was implemented 😎

It's been documented that some people have resumed meat eating after years of veganism as they became ill from not having meat in their diet. I know I become ill without red meat.

Starlight7080 · 10/02/2025 10:10

But I really like the odd lamb roast or chicken curry .
And freedom to choose.

ohtowinthelottery · 10/02/2025 10:11

I'd rather see all the processed crap that's sold in supermarkets banned first. All that manufacturing, packaging and transportation is damaging the environment, not to mention the damage it's doing to peoples' bodies. Far worse than my piece of beef I buy from my local butcher. Replacing real meat with manufactured meat lookalikes isn't going to help anyone.

Comedycook · 10/02/2025 10:11

What a ridiculous idea.

Historically the rich have always eaten the best meat...whilst the poor are left with the grains and veg.

There's a reason for that

Huckyfell · 10/02/2025 10:11

Veganism, it's a big missed steak.

sparrowflewdown · 10/02/2025 10:12

I do eat meat but try to limit it. I have switched to oatmilk and am looking to stop eating meat and all products.

I hate thngs like 'Happy Meals' at MDs it is horrible to kill so many animals and then market it to children in this way.

How can we be civilised, if eat animals when there are now viable alternatives.

I have respect for people who look after their own animals and then kill them as they have a connection to what they are doing and they do feel the weight of their actions.

We used to pray and be thankful for what we ate now we pick up a burger at a drive through without a second thought to the animal we are eating.

YANBU OP.

A lot of (probably most) vegan food is massively processed. Look at the ingredients - half the stuff on sale isn't even really 'food.' A piece of chicken or fish is much better for us than a weirdly artificial 'sausage' or 'phish' or some random piece of vegan protein. Humans are designed to be omnivores - we're not designed to live on synthesised pea protein. There's quite a lot of scientific research suggesting ultra-processed food is (at least partly) responsible for the obesity crisis.

Also, you can't produce the volume of food needed for a pure vegan diet in the UK and natural habitats are destroyed to do this (eg for soy bean crops) and there's the environmental impact of transporting the stuff. I'm not convinced that a vegan diet is better for the planet (or the people on it) than eating a locally-sourced, natural diet.

All some people need is an iron or B12 supplement if they are having problems.

bellsend · 10/02/2025 10:12

This will never happen. Thankfully.

Lentilweaver · 10/02/2025 10:13

I dont really understand the British notion that being veggie means eating processed crap.
Millions of veggie people across the world eat that common substitute: vegetables.

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 10:13

I feel it will be illegal within 100 years.

Snorlaxo · 10/02/2025 10:13

If we banned meat eating for environmental and ethical reasons then we should ban transporting food from overseas and plant products like coconut milk (worker exploitation) and almond milk (bad for milk) Would honey and fruit be banned because they are produced by bees? A shocking number of food miles are on food labelled British as it’s packed overseas then sent back.
Instead of booze cruises to France, people would end up travelling for the chance to eat food and drink that isn’t native to the UK. We’d be stuck with like 3 vegetables over the winter months and the price would shoot up and poor people would starve as a result.

Lourdes12 · 10/02/2025 10:13

I don’t think you can substitute the nutrients in meat. Humans have always been eating meat, it’s part of the food chain. It’s our natural diet. Are we going to ban animals from eating their natural food too?! All this lab grown meat is unhealthy and disgusting

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/02/2025 09:39

No thanks.

Animals taste nice, and nothing touches the sides of a minging hangover like a greasy fry-up full of animal parts.

I've tried every meat-substitute/plant-derived sausage/bacon/haggis product on the market, and none of them get close to the real thing.

Sorry animals, you're cute, fuzzy, loveable and stuff, but you're also delicious on a morning roll and covered in HP Sauce, so off to the slaughterhouse you go...

Very inconsiderate response. I'm a meat eater and I even find your comment to be in very bad taste.

If you get drunk and bladdered, that's on you.
Maybe it's time for you to give up alcohol since you get smashed so bad you have a "minging hangover"

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 10:14

But I want my slaves. No one can take my slaves from me. Wah wah wah.
You won't ban slavery, it's been legal for years. It's how I built my city that I lord over. We wouldn't have built the pyramids and other great things without slavery. What about the slave industry - all those people who will be out of a job if we ban slavery. Slaves don't have the same feelings as us. They don't feel pain. They were put on this earth to serve us. Don't preach to me, you holier-than-thou abolitionist. FrEEdOm To Cho0o0o0o0ose. Innit.

They’d probably be thrilled not to be farm animals anymore to be honest.

Not if farmers stopped looking after them, feeding them, worming them, sheering them, paying for vets and hoof trimmers etc.. We couldn't just abandon farm animals - someone would need to care for them to end of life and the government would need to fund that!

Diomi · 10/02/2025 10:14

What about carnivorous pets? Would they be illegal as well?

ironingboardsarenotweapons · 10/02/2025 10:15

Are you either spoiling for a rumble or someone who wants their ethics essay written for them?

Fwiw, look at the huge amount of environmental damage caused by some of the alternatives. What would you rather eat? Actual real chicken or some horrendously processed chick'n alternative.

You still need protein, which isn't adequately provided by vegetables. If you're veggie you can eat eggs, which are a good source, but I think the lack of variation in the diet puts a lot of people off.

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 10:15

Diomi · 10/02/2025 10:14

Perhaps it will be illegal to commodify animals both for meat and for company

Bushmillsbabe · 10/02/2025 10:15

Theoretically I don't think you are wrong
But my gluten free soya free dairy free nut free child would definitely struggle as a vegan, she would be limited to fruit, veg and rice, getting enough protein into her would be a big challenge

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 10/02/2025 10:16

Don't be ridiculous.

aspidernamedfluffy · 10/02/2025 10:17

How is that going to work? Are we to have somebody standing with us 24/7 to ensure that we only eat veggie stuff? You can ban meat sales all you want....there's plenty of wildlife here in the countryside that would end up on someone's table without the need to buy it. If you want to see a rise in trapping/snaring/lamping (all of which are illegal but very hard to police as it is), then crack on with your ban.

Exactly, I actually don't think that meat-eaters all genuinely think this though - it's just a cheap shot like they think they can get us with a gotcha!
My diet is predominantly whole foods, plant-based - loads of good fruit and veg. We barely ever have meat substitutes.
