calvermegan · 03/02/2025 21:02

I have always said Crispy Cream. That is what they were called on any American tv show I watched growing up.

Now they are mainstream in the UK I often hear people call them “Crispy Crem”

Which one do you say?

Expensive luxury doughnuts are not the cause of obesity in the UK

Expensive, yes
Luxury, no

illegalSausage · 03/02/2025 22:02

I say creme eggs actually

But how do you pronounce "creme"?

StrawberrySquash · 03/02/2025 22:05

Cream. Because no one says Crem for a Cadbury crème egg either.

Plus crem sounds horrible. Like the abbreviation for crematorium, which is doubly bad coupled with crispy.

Potsofpetals · 03/02/2025 22:07

It’s cream. Always has been and no matter how much the brits try to say otherwise l, that won’t change.

illegalSausage · 03/02/2025 22:11

@MasterBeth krem

@StrawberrySquash thats so funny! I have never heard anyone say crem for crematorium because its not a word most of us say often enough to need to abbreviate.

Fizzygoo · 03/02/2025 22:12

Cream

Does anyone say Crem Egg?

Good point 😂

I say cream, the way Americans have always said it on tv.

I think when it came over here a lot of people hadn't heard it and tried to say it phonetically as crem.

MasterBeth · 03/02/2025 22:16

Ok, so you pronounce Creme Eggs wrong and you pronounce Krispy Kreme wrong. Nice work.

I went a conference where a high-up from Krispy Kreme was talking and he was questioned about the health risks of his HFSS (High fat salt and sugar) food. His response was that you needed to take into account the "mental health benefits" of a doughnut to get a rounded idea of whether they were good for you or not!!!

I'm obese according to my BMI and I have never eaten a Krispy Kreme donut in my life, and probably only 10 donuts of any sort. So he may have a point.

illegalSausage · 03/02/2025 22:17

@MasterBeth well how do you pronounce chorizo?

FatOaf · 03/02/2025 22:21

Cream.

"Kreme" is not a word, so it has no "official" pronunciation. But, as it doesn't have a grave accent like crème, I see no reason to pronounce it to rhyme with crème.

But there are two more important things about Krispy Kreme doughnuts/donuts/tagnuts/whatever, apart from the fact that they are neither crispy nor creamy, nor even Kremey.

  1. They taste utterly revolting and are in no way worth the 250 kCal, 9 g of fat, 6 g of sugar, +1 cm of waist diameter and -1 week of life expectancy per portion
  2. The penis who drives the Krsipy Kreme lorry and parks it on double yellow lines outside Sainsbury's - opposite a junction and reducing the width of the road to barely a car's width - every single day must have eaten so much of his product that he can't haul his bulk more than the 2-metre width of the pavement
TheWiresAreInTheAirNow · 03/02/2025 22:21

Only on Mumsnet, on a simple pronunciation thread, can some posters turn it into a rant about obesity etc

Crispy cream. Occasional partaker. Not obese. Because there is such a thing as being able to make your own healthy choices as well as have a treat occasionally.

ottersinmotion · 03/02/2025 22:21

Anyone in the USA saying Krispie Crem is mocking the name to make it sound more upscale.

Also Kreme has nothing to do with a cream filling. They were originally just plain glazed yeast donuts. No filling. Best eaten fresh and hot.

Serpentstooth · 03/02/2025 22:22

Krispee kreem. Never bought one, it would be my downfall and I'd be chasing them every day.

@MasterBeth krem

I live opposite a crem with a footpath through so everyone uses it as a cut-through and most of us in our neighbourhood refer to it often and call it the crem. Might start calling it the kreme to be expensive and luxurious.

Itiswhysofew · 03/02/2025 22:23

It's cream.

mallorytowers8282 · 03/02/2025 22:24

@illegalSausage you honestly say crem egg?

Why?

YourAzureEagle · 03/02/2025 22:27

calvermegan · 03/02/2025 21:02

I have always said Crispy Cream. That is what they were called on any American tv show I watched growing up.

Now they are mainstream in the UK I often hear people call them “Crispy Crem”

Which one do you say?

Cream, that is what I'm sure the original trademark creators had in mind back in 1937

But of course, we have Pure Cremation, Just Cremation, Distinct Cremation, are they diversifying the business?, is Krispy Crem their new line in cut priced funerals, free box of doughnuts thrown in?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/02/2025 22:27

HamandCheeseSandwich · 03/02/2025 21:26

Why? When it's spelled with an e on the end and no accent?

and the company themselves say cream

Presumably because it's a bit like the French 'crème' (but with a 'k').

I'd pronounce it 'cream' though. Not sure why people are still arguing for crem though, as the company made it pretty clear!

Mountainpika · 03/02/2025 22:29

Crispy crem - sounds like and ad for a funeral director.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/02/2025 22:30

Why? What about 'theme', 'scheme' and 'meme' ?

MasterBeth · 03/02/2025 22:30

illegalSausage · 03/02/2025 22:17

@MasterBeth well how do you pronounce chorizo?

Correctly.

illegalSausage · 03/02/2025 22:30

@mallorytowers8282 because its written creme egg in the French way
Cream eggs sounds disgusting
