Spaghetti is the default pasta

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

🤣 thanks for the laugh!

VotingForYourself · 26/01/2025 20:45

Disagree. Those twiddly fussili things can also be default pasta. I agree that Penne isn't default pasta and maccaroni most certainly isn't default pasta.

GretchenWienersHair · 26/01/2025 20:45

Nope. It’s definitely penne in my house. Spaghetti is strictly for spaghetti bolognaise 😄

PigInAHouse · 26/01/2025 20:46

Penne is the default pasta in my house. I only really have spaghetti if we’re having spaghetti vongole.

Sparklfairy · 26/01/2025 20:46

I was about to say 'pasta is pasta' but somehow I have recoiled at the thought of mixing pasta types Shock

SarahAndQuack · 26/01/2025 20:46

Oh, god no. Spaghetti is the devil's pasta. Totally pointless. Messy to eat and never tastes good unless it's fresh.

I grant you that a mix of pasta types is weird. But he gets full credit for avoiding spaghetti.

I tried it once. Never again.

PigInAHouse · 26/01/2025 20:46

You can’t mix pastas though. That’s the behaviour of a heathen.

GoodOlePolariod · 26/01/2025 20:46

Default here is fusili .

fluffi · 26/01/2025 20:47

YABU. Spaghetti is too hard and messy to eat, penne is the default pasta all the way!

TulipTuesday · 26/01/2025 20:47

Spaghetti is definitely not the default pasta.

Penne or Fusilli are.

I’d be annoyed if I was expecting pasta and sauce and it was spaghetti slopping about in the sauce.

name1234noidea · 26/01/2025 20:47

Spaghetti is only acceptable with bolognaise. Default is penne or fusilli.

Lovethesparklylights · 26/01/2025 20:47

Penne is default pasta in ours. Kids specify if they want spaghetti or fusilli.

It's not if you snap it in half.

WWGD · 26/01/2025 20:47

Yabu. Spaghetti is spaghetti. Pasta is penne unless otherwise specified.

(but yanbu to be disappointed that what you had in mind did not appear on your plate. I hate it when dh messes with classics)

Snorlaxo · 26/01/2025 20:47

Default pasta is penne or fusilli here.
I agree with mixing macaroni and penne though. I would only do that if skint.

876543A · 26/01/2025 20:47

I definitely call spaghetti by the name if I want spaghetti, same with macaroni.
All other shapes are default pasta.

ladyvimes · 26/01/2025 20:47

Fusilli over penne all day!

BobbyBiscuits · 26/01/2025 20:47

I don't like mixing different pasta. They take different times to cook, so one will be soggy, the other hard. Spaghetti to me is very messy though. And it doesn't hold the sauce. I prefer penne, fusilli or even tagliatelle.
Sausages in the sauce wouldn't be my favourite. I like tuna, anchovies, olives, capers and garlic in tomato pasta. I guess you just have to pretend to like it?!

Lovelysummerdays · 26/01/2025 20:47

Penne is default pasta in my house. Spaghetti is for bolognaise or with pesto.

VotingForYourself · 26/01/2025 20:47

What are those little bows called. They're nice

BarbaraHoward · 26/01/2025 20:48

YABU and I will fight you hard on this. The default pasta is penne (although in my house it's fusilli). Spaghetti is a pain in the arse to eat and I would be unimpressed to be presented with spaghetti when told to expect pasta.

Pencilsieve · 26/01/2025 20:48

Sorry spaghetti is spaghetti! Penne is the default pasta. Macaroni mixed in is the biggest crime here though.

The Italians are going to hunt you down for this comment….😂

Strikeback · 26/01/2025 20:49

Penne = default. Although personally I like spirali and tagliatelle best. I am a mixer though.
