Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

default here is tagliatelli but only the kind made with egg.

Hoochyvida · 26/01/2025 21:10

Oh and the elk pasta from ikea is amazing. I might get some and surprise a penne expecting guest in the future!

KenAdams · 26/01/2025 21:10

No, penne is the default pasta. A spaghetti dish specifically has the name spaghetti in it.

StinkerTroll · 26/01/2025 21:10

Spaghetti is the devil's work! I can't eat it in public without fear of covering everyone in pasta sauce! Penne or twirls are our default pasta, I have been known to mix them.

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 26/01/2025 21:10

Well OP, you're from a house full of wrong uns.

You with yoir spaghetti with a tomato sauce and your husband mixing pastas.

Save us all!!!

minipie · 26/01/2025 21:10

spaghetti is a terrible base for thick sauces like bolognaise, plus my husband likes wearing cream jumpers and can’t be trusted with spaghetti actually we do tend to do fusilli bolognese for this reason.

Globusmedia · 26/01/2025 21:11

Spaghetti is the most specific pasta! If I said 'pasta' I would never ever mean spaghetti.

Penne and fusilli are definitely the basics, they have the biggest sections in the supermarket.

MirrorMirror00 · 26/01/2025 21:11

Fusilli is the default in this house. Kids generally prefer spaghetti though.

LunaNorth · 26/01/2025 21:12

I never call spaghetti ‘pasta’. It’s always ‘spaghetti’. Also linguine and tagliatelle.

Non-long pastas are ‘pasta’. Funny that.

DanceMumTaxi · 26/01/2025 21:12

Penne is the default here. I do prefer spaghetti but the kids make a mess, penne is just easier. I’d never mix two types though. They’d cook at different speeds. It’s just wrong.

Nonaynevernomore · 26/01/2025 21:12

Fusion pasta is all types of wrong! I’m sorry this happened to you.

TruffleMonkey · 26/01/2025 21:13

I feel well placed to respond to this as I was once passionately scolded by an Italian for using a different type of pasta than the recipe specified.

Different shapes of pasta hold different sauces better. So you wouldn't make a linguine bolognaise because tomato based sauces stick better to spaghetti which is rounder and other such logic.

So unfortunately YABU (coming from someone who puts pineapple on pizza though)

Congliche or hollow spiral pasta is my default (believed it was called spiralini but a google search has cast doubt upon my assumption and apparently that’s something else) for all sauces, spaghetti is a terrible base for thick sauces like bolognaise, plus my husband likes wearing cream jumpers and can’t be trusted with spaghetti, much to his disappointment, as he was raised in a spaghetti household. You very likely didn’t give the penne a fair shake or you would have realised that it - and any other pasta shape that allows sauce to well inside of it - is far superior to spaghetti in every way.

Spirali is what you’re thinking of.

Rewis · 26/01/2025 21:13

Spaghetti is spaghetti, macaroni is macaroni, for me penne or gnocchi is default if just pasta.

ScarlettSunset · 26/01/2025 21:13

GretchenWienersHair · 26/01/2025 20:45

Nope. It’s definitely penne in my house. Spaghetti is strictly for spaghetti bolognaise 😄

Same here. Penne is default.

I had a friend who's 'default pasta' was spaghetti and she also used to snap it in half to fit it in the water. Now THAT was an outrage as far as I am concerned...

Gnocchi is never default!

veganmayo · 26/01/2025 21:14

Why did you give such a vague answer when you had such a specific preference in mind? 😂 also penne or fusilli are definitely default. Spaghetti is probably option #5.

EveryKneeShallBow · 26/01/2025 21:14

I’ve just returned from my Quiz Night where one of the questions was What do you call a single strand of spaghetti. I was the only one who gave the correct answer. And, I came third overall, which isn’t bad since I was on my own and the team that won had six members. Sorry for the thread derail. As you were.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2025 21:15

Gnocchi isn’t pasta.

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 26/01/2025 21:15

I've maaged to get over the horror of the thinking thats going on in your home OP, and have now given it some thought.

I think penne and fusilli are default home pasta. Based on my feeling disappointed if that's whats on a menu in an Italian restaurant.

LipbalmOrKnickers · 26/01/2025 21:16

Fusili default pasta here, all about the sauce capturing capabilities.

Gnocchi is never default!

I need to correct this. I mean the shape gnocci that look like shells. Not the potato things.
