Spaghetti is the default pasta

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

Same here. Penne is default.

I had a friend who's 'default pasta' was spaghetti and she also used to snap it in half to fit it in the water. Now THAT was an outrage as far as I am concerned...

Much easier for the littleys to eat!

I need to correct this. I mean the shape gnocci that look like shells. Not the potato things.

Edited

It's not pasta. It's potato

PrinnyPree · 26/01/2025 21:17

Fusilli is our default pasta, (really good at sauce retention)

Spaghetti is spaghetti and only the default for bolognaise or with meat balls.

I like linguine if we're doing a carbonara.

My 4 year old loves spaghetti so they can slurp it up and generally make a massive mess or penne so they can blow through the tube when they get full mid meal and end up titting about so this is also a factor in fusilli winning as default.

Hate farfalle as it never cooks evenly so over soggy on the outside and too al dente in the middle. Never tried it fresh but imagine that's the only way that would be a nice pasta choice. Having said that, reminds me of Alan Partridge so that's a bonus.

OneLemonDog · 26/01/2025 21:17

Another vote for penne as default.

Spaghetti is more specialized.

That may have been acceptable except she did not have children, or even really know any.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2025 21:17

We love penne and sausages with pesto

Spaghetti is spaghetti, macaroni is macaroni, for me penne or gnocchi is default if just pasta.

How can Gnocchi be a default pasta when it isn't pasta??

Hoops are the default.

Alphabetti for Birthdays and Special Occasions (e.g. Valentine's Day).

Peppa Pig Shapes for Beetle Drives and Murder Mystery Dinner Parties.

I don't care what you say, it will never be acceptable to drive a beetle.

I’ve just returned from my Quiz Night where one of the questions was What do you call a single strand of spaghetti. I was the only one who gave the correct answer. And, I came third overall, which isn’t bad since I was on my own and the team that won had six members. Sorry for the thread derail. As you were.

If you tell us what the word for a single strand of spaghetti is you will have made this thread actually worth something and not just a whinge by a petulant wife!

What are those little bows called. They're nice

Yeah I love them they are called farfelle I think

TimetoPour · 26/01/2025 21:19

You are both unreasonable. It all depends on the sauce

Bolognese or meatballs = linguine/spaghetti
Pesto = fusilli
Garlic, spinach and pine nut = farfalle
Roasted veg = rigatoni
Duck ragu = pappardelle

Not that I’m fussy or anything!

Franjipanl8r · 26/01/2025 21:19

Spaghetti is the WORST pasta type. It goes with bolognaise and that’s it.

Kate1234567 · 26/01/2025 21:19

YADBU. Default pasta is never spaghetti unless you’re making carbonara. My 3 year old gets more spaghetti on the floor than in her mouth. It’s more trouble than it’s worth. And it always sticks out the top of the pan and then doesn’t cook evenly, or you use the massive pan that doesn’t fit in the dishwasher.
Frankly OP, I’m very surprised you choose it.

Snapping spaghetti is sacrilege.

Standard spaghetti used to be longer than you find in the shops nowadays. Was even better then Wink

But penne is the default pasta because those ridges are designed to hold in the sauce!

VotingForYourself · 26/01/2025 21:21

I had some fun Christmas pasta from Lidl for the wee one but tbh it didn't taste amazing

Isn't that conchiglie?

Terrible stuff, but better than gnocci!

Spaghetti has to be specified and usually really only for bolognaise or occasionally meatballs.

Macaroni is only for mac n cheese.

And default pasta is whatever shape is sold in the big bags that last forever 😂 Shells are my favourite but you never get the big bags of them.

Gymsharkmum · 26/01/2025 21:23

spagh is absolutely not a default pasta. If I wanted spaghetti I would say spaghetti otherwise I’d expect to get pasta.

however, what your DH created is enough to have my Italian ancestors rolling in their graves🤣

nice of him to try though. At least you were kind about it

WhySoManySocks · 26/01/2025 21:23

Different pasta works with different sauces, because the texture of the sauce needs to work with the shape of the pasta to create the optimal stickiness. For example, bolognese sauce should never go with spaghetti.

Sausage meet in pasta is lovely. It would probably work with penne.

Mixing two pasta shapes is unacceptable under any circumstances. You have my blessing, if you need it, to LTB.

luckylavender · 26/01/2025 21:23

Spaghetti is definitely not default pasta.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 26/01/2025 21:24

@RawBloomers is there any difference in the ingredients??? arent most pastas are made with the same stuff! just the way they are cut or shaped is different!

NattyTurtle59 · 26/01/2025 21:24

No, spaghetti is not the default pasta and I would far rather have something else. I will go with fettuccine but I never buy spaghetti. I really wouldn't care if someone served me penne and macaroni, I've mixed pastas myself at times.

Trepidfox · 26/01/2025 21:24

Is it weird that I love spaghetti but dislike pasta? I find it so bulky and fills me up after 4 bites? 🤷🏻‍♀️
