Spaghetti is the default pasta

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

Fusilli is the default here.
Spaghetti impossible to eat gracefully
Penne must be the ridged penne - smooth ones always make me imagine I’m eating the blood vessels of a very large animal - no idea where I got this idea from but it’s ruined countless pasta bakes for me 🤢

Whotenanny · 26/01/2025 20:57

Fusilli is the default here. Penne is pretty dull.

Conchiglie is my favourite though.

GordonRamsey · 26/01/2025 20:57

Hoops are the default.

Alphabetti for Birthdays and Special Occasions (e.g. Valentine's Day).

Peppa Pig Shapes for Beetle Drives and Murder Mystery Dinner Parties.

RedLightsStopSigns · 26/01/2025 20:57

I’d consider penne the default.

I hate spaghetti. Sometimes I try and swallow it and it sort of gets caught halfway down my throat and ugh.

@BobbyBiscuits surely if you mix different types of pasta you add them to the saucepan according to the length it says on the packaging though? Ie one type first, wait 3 minutes, then the other?

I never look at the instructions on the packet! I like mine al dente so just keep an eye on it until it looks right. It’s too soft if you follow the packet instructions.

TheKeatingFive · 26/01/2025 20:58

I think Spaghetti is a category on its own and Penne is the default pasta.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 26/01/2025 20:58

Fusilli is the default for me.

Doechii · 26/01/2025 20:58

Penne is the default

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2025 20:59

Sorry, it’s rigatoni or fettuccini here.

teapotfullofsquash · 26/01/2025 21:00

Sorry OP, another vote for twirly or shell pasta as the default pasta.
Spaghetti is strictly for bolognaise. If I gave mine spaghetti with no meat and just sauce, they'd think I'd gone mad.

Azzywhatty · 26/01/2025 21:00

No one calls spaghetti pasta. If you want spaghetti you say spaghetti. If you say pasta you mean penne or the like.

lottiegarbanzo · 26/01/2025 21:00

Team penne!

SpongeBobSquarePantaloons · 26/01/2025 21:00

Ehhh no. Spaghetti is spaghetti. If you ask for pasta you'll get whatever is in the cupboard (either penne or fusilli).

TheSoapyFrog · 26/01/2025 21:00

YABU. Default pasta here is penne. Spaghetti is entirely separate. If you want pasta and sauce, you'll get default pasta and sauce.if you want spaghetti, you need to ask for it

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/01/2025 21:00

Rigatoni
Spirali
Penne
Farfalle in a cold pasta salad

Not a fan of spaghetti or macaroni
And never tagliatelle (there's a story that you don't want to know )

GoodOlePolariod · 26/01/2025 20:46

Default here is fusili .

Same. If we have a spaghetti pomodoro we specify spaghetti. Pasta wouldn’t be spaghetti by default here.

Sassysoonwins · 26/01/2025 21:01

I hate penne, always takes longer than it should to cook. Fusilli is our default pasta, spaghetti is spaghetti and is asked for specifically unless we're having meatballs, then of course it's with spaghetti. I'd forgotten about farfalle (sp) or dicky bows, might get some in just for a change as they're pretty.

Mixing pasta types is definitely out of order though, is he quite well?

Is it tapeworm related?

Skandar · 26/01/2025 21:01

Ds is always really disappointed if I say we're having pasta, and then give him spaghetti, he's adamant it isn't what he thinks of as pasta....

I do tend to use spaghetti for specific things, and other pastas as generic "pasta" (except for macaroni which is only ever for macaroni cheese!)

RIPVPROG · 26/01/2025 21:02

I always call spaghetti - spaghetti, pasta is usually fusilli in this house, occasionally penne, spirali, conchigle, casarecce, gigli, radiatori. Never farfalle. Orzo again always called orzo, macaroni is macaroni, the generic pasta term is reserved for forkable bite size chunks of pasta. Other pasta types have a specific function and should be named.

gingercat02 · 26/01/2025 21:02

Rigatoni or penne here. If you want long pasta, tagliatelle or linguine are both better than spaghetti

PigInAHouse · 26/01/2025 21:02

Oh and on your second point… I quite like sausage in pasta sauce!

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 26/01/2025 21:02

YABU - however mixing pasta is also unthinkable!

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 26/01/2025 21:03

We don’t even have spaghetti in the house anymore.

if we’re having bolognese then it’s either bucatini or a new flat pasta with a wavy edge from Waitrose.

A good pasta is what makes a pasta dish the best!
