Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

orzo is gross i thought it was nice then changed my mind. I want pastina but I can't find it anywhere apart from amazon for £20 a box. But I normally just put one of those Aldi Detroit style square vegetarian pizzas in the oven with ricotta on top and red onions and some chopped up cucumbers .

SatinHeart · 27/01/2025 18:03

Fusilli is the default (and generally only) pasta in our house because it's the only one we can get in 3kg bags. Spaghetti would need to be asked for specifically.

I don't think I've ever mixed pasta types in one dish though 😱

gingercat02 · 27/01/2025 18:04

For those dissing sausage pasta, Jamie Oliver has a delicious recipe (with a dreadful name) www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/pasta/pregnant-jools-pasta/

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 27/01/2025 18:05

I disagree. In our house 'pasta' would be any type of pasta with the exception of spaghetti. Spaghetti is spaghetti. Is it a regional thing? And I wouldn't have spaghetti with just a sauce but I would pasta, I have no idea why, only have spaghetti with bolognese.

DilemmaDelilah · 27/01/2025 18:08

Hmmm - in our house 'pasta' usually means pasta shapes of some kind. It always used to be penne but I have recently decided that I actually really like macaroni. We do have lots of other shapes as well - just not fusilli, radiatore or farfalle because I don't like the way the thick bits don't cook at the same time as the thin bits. Spaghetti is different from 'pasta' despite the fact that it isnt. I like spaghetti for anything that is pasta with a sauce, and macaroni (or penne) for anything which is baked with a sauce. And then of course there's lasagne. And canneloni. Both pasta, but not.....

I have no objection at all to meatballs etc. with my pasta.

MrsClatterbuck · 27/01/2025 18:08

Tagliatelle or linguine here. I like parpadelle dh not so much. Penne is when I make a pasta bake. Once dh and I were on holiday in Montreal and in an Italian restaurant you could choose your pasta and then the sauce. Got told off by the French waiter that my pick wasn't compatible so I choose something else. So what pasta would appear to depend on the sauce.

MerryTealHedgehog · 27/01/2025 18:09

spaghetti with just sauce is weird it was always spaghetti Bolognese for us.

Asking for pasta with pasta sauce is sooo vague, it could be almost anything.
It's like going to a bar asking for "a drink" and being disappointed when instead or a Long Island iced tea they give you a pint of Guinness.

Penne or Fusilli are default for me.
I don't really like spaghetti unless it's chopped up and it doesn't fit it the cupboard. DC love it though.

“A drink” is clearly a Gin & Tonic and if DH gets that wrong after 30 years solicitors will need to be consulted.

Default pasta is penne here. Ive just realised if we want spaghetti we specify as if it's not pasta.

Macaroni for Mac and cheese

BitOutOfPractice · 27/01/2025 19:16

Of course if you go to Bologna and ask for spaghetti bolognaise, you will be immediately castigated and ostracised as bolognaise sauce is always always served with tagliatelle that must be of a regulation width. So I think that is the law and I declare this thread CLOSED!

nellly · 27/01/2025 19:23

VotingForYourself · 26/01/2025 20:45

Disagree. Those twiddly fussili things can also be default pasta. I agree that Penne isn't default pasta and maccaroni most certainly isn't default pasta.

Edited

Fussili is default in our house!! Spaghetti strictly for Spag Bol!

They would probably be unimpressed if you spelled it 'bolognaise' as well, as that's the French spelling!

dontcrowdthemushrooms · 27/01/2025 21:00

Mixing types is a heinous crime and I would consider a divorce, but also YABU because spaghetti is among the worst types of pasta and turns a potentially delicious meal into a culinary inconvenience.

Tiredofallthis101 · 27/01/2025 21:02

There is no default pasta in our house, it varies between spaghetti/fusilli/ conchiglie/farfalle. But if I wanted something specific I'd be specific.

Was he trying to be helpful and use up partially used packets? Mine does that. Sacrilege.

Eldermillenialyogi · 27/01/2025 21:06

Nope

Fusili or Penne is the default but he shouldn't be mixing pastas

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 27/01/2025 21:26

I eat spaghetti more often than other pasta, so in some ways it is the default for me, but for some reason I don't quite understand, I don't tend to refer to spaghetti as pasta. I know full well it is a form of pasta, but if someone says pasta, I picture something like fusilli. I don't think YABU though, because we all use language slightly differently - you just need to make a note of what happened here and make sure you specifically ask for spaghetti another time.

Probably. My phone spelled it like that. 🤷‍♀️ Doesn’t change my spaghetti point though eh?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/01/2025 22:52

My default is tagliatelle. The young people seem to prefer penne. We also like orzo and macaroni in our house.

But I didn’t have Bolognese sauce!

Look, I’ve given the definitive answer to end all answers. You just need to accept it now op.

takealettermsjones · 27/01/2025 23:32

Spaghetti is spaghetti (and is generally rubbish)
Tagliatelle may only be eaten fresh, with garlic butter. Dried tagliatelle is crap
Farfalle goes in cold pasta salad only, with pine nuts and sun dried tomatoes
Orzo is the baby weaning one, and therefore I will not trust any grown up who likes it
Macaroni is annoying and always seems to stick together

The answer, as many PPs have already pointed out, is that the default pasta is either penne or fusilli, as you can buy a sack of it bigger than the average toddler.

whenwhenwhen · 27/01/2025 23:44

I'm posh darling. Radiatori for me.

Lindtnotlint · 27/01/2025 23:59

Did he actually mix penne and macaroni? (As opposed to eg penne and rigatoni?). If so, mixing middle sized with small is gross and this is a LTB. The End.

MerryTealHedgehog · 28/01/2025 00:31

linguine is the best PASTA!

MarshMallowHeather · 28/01/2025 02:25

In my house pasta= penne or fuscilli (I can't spell!) and spaghetti means spaghetti. Any other kind of pasta gets its pasta name. So penne probably default pasta. Macaroni certainly not.
