Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

What are those little bows called. They're nice

The Italians are going to hunt you down for this comment….😂

I never claim it to be authentic if that helps 😂

MindfulAndDemure · 26/01/2025 20:49

Fusilli is our default pasta, I feel like the sauce doesn't properly adhere to Spaghetti.

It's not if you snap it in half.

"Whenever you snap pasta in half, there's an Italian fairy somewhere that falls right down dead."

I'm sure I read that in Peter Pan.

Phase2 · 26/01/2025 20:50

Weirdly we say spaghetti and / tagliatelle and / pasta and - the latter being whatever I’ve chosen to go with the sauce.
you have reminded me however of an outraged woman that mushrooms were in a sauce with tomato in an Italian I went to yesterday.

Farfalle?

I love a wanky overpriced pasta - preferably over or undersized to add to the thrill. Or a funny colour!

Penne is the default though imo!

GrumpyInsomniac · 26/01/2025 20:50

No. In our house if you ask for pasta you’re likely to get penne or fusilli or conchiglie. If you want spaghetti you ask for spaghetti. I don’t make the rules, that’s just how my husband and son work, so I’ve learned to communicate my preferences clearly.

Both DH and DS default to anything but spaghetti because they both have beards and don’t like picking sauce out of their beards after dinner, which I think explains the problem in our house. Could this be why your DH defaults to pasta shapes?

But your DH is being unreasonable to mix pasta shapes.

eightIsNewNine · 26/01/2025 20:50

Penne is the default pasta in our home.

When we make spaghetti we call them spaghetti, not pasta.

Finedandydodah · 26/01/2025 20:50

Spaghetti is spaghetti.

Pasta is Fusilli, Penne and any other shape.

I can't understand how any thinks spaghetti is messy to eat. Twirl people twirl 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 26/01/2025 20:50

Spaghetti is the worst of the pastas. Messy and fiddly to eat so it’s always stone cold. Pain in the arse.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 26/01/2025 20:51

Yabu girl, penne or fusilli are the default pastas

It's a crime to mix two together though!

Florally · 26/01/2025 20:52

Mixing pasta types is the only crime here..

We don’t really have a default pasta, switch between types but I like conchiglie (sp?) the best…

Fatloss · 26/01/2025 20:52

Fusilli Is my default, find spaghetti too messy unless there’s basically no sauce - like just olive oil and garlic and pepper.

AffIt · 26/01/2025 20:53

Linguine is the default pasta in our house.

I grudgingly accept spiralini because OH likes it, but I'd prefer penne. Fusili is banned.

The only acceptable pasta for macaroni cheese is, unsurprisingly, macaroni.

Alabas · 26/01/2025 20:53

name1234noidea · 26/01/2025 20:47

Spaghetti is only acceptable with bolognaise. Default is penne or fusilli.

Spaghetti Is the worst pasta for bolognese! It slides off the sauce and doesn’t amalgamate properly.

Spaghetti is only for light oil based dishes, or a very light tomato sauce. Crab, clams, etc.

Penne is my worst pasta.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 26/01/2025 20:54

Penne or the twisty one (fusilli?) would be considered standard pasta in our house. Spaghetti only ever used with Boulegnese. But we all slightly favour tagliatelle now so that is heading towards being our default pasta.

I feel for you though, pasta disappointment cuts deep.

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 26/01/2025 20:55

Penne is the go to in our house.
None of my kids will eat spaghetti.

Dinosweetpea · 26/01/2025 20:55

Absolutely not, spaghetti is ONLY for spag bol or meatballs.
Fusili or penne is always the default 😀

DancinOnTheCeiling · 26/01/2025 20:55

BobbyBiscuits · 26/01/2025 20:47

I don't like mixing different pasta. They take different times to cook, so one will be soggy, the other hard. Spaghetti to me is very messy though. And it doesn't hold the sauce. I prefer penne, fusilli or even tagliatelle.
Sausages in the sauce wouldn't be my favourite. I like tuna, anchovies, olives, capers and garlic in tomato pasta. I guess you just have to pretend to like it?!

@BobbyBiscuits surely if you mix different types of pasta you add them to the saucepan according to the length it says on the packaging though? Ie one type first, wait 3 minutes, then the other?

Action man bow tie!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 26/01/2025 20:56

Spaghetti in this house has to be asked for specifically if thats what my dad wants, as it is the last pasta i'd pick if there's other options. Spirali, Conchigle or Farfalle for me!

Brickiscool · 26/01/2025 20:56

No! Penne is totally the default pasta!
Spaghetti is when you are feeling fancier as it takes more effort to eat. Penne is a default one fork pasta

The little shells are best for bolognese because the meat/sauce gets inside them and you get a complete mouthful!

oharibo · 26/01/2025 20:56

Pasta is fusilli or penne.

Spaghetti is spaghetti sorry OP
