Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

I also have a fear of mirrors at night. Too many horror films! I stare into the sink when I brush my teeth at night Blush

Omg same 🤣

MissMoan · 25/01/2025 00:58

Germaphobe here - Buffets scare me. People talking while eating scares me even more.

SecretWitch · 25/01/2025 00:58

Sink holes. When I smoke weed I obsess about gravity failing or the earth cracking in half

Omg!! Me too! I slink by any windows or mirrors after dark lest Bloody Mary appears.. I summoned her 45 years ago and I'm terrified she will suddenly remember and show up in my mirror

SheSaidHummingbird · 25/01/2025 01:07

Trypophobia - an aversion or repulsion to objects like honeycombs and sponges that have repetitive patterns or clusters of small holes. People with trypophobia are disgusted by the pattern of holes.

I don't even know why! Ugh. Freaks me out.

Mama2many73 · 25/01/2025 01:09

I once had a dream about ladybirds where I was watching them and they were lovely but suddenly there were loads of them and they attacked my face. My DH had to wake me up cos I was screaming !! Terrified me at the time.

I don't like butterflies at all. Very pretty colours but then look at their proboscis!!

SheSaidHummingbird · 25/01/2025 01:09

Oh! Others have mentioned! @@iamnotalemon@iamnotalemon @Fgfgfg

This is me too! London Bridge in particular, I just cannot walk over it. Have had to get bus / cab over it before. I just freeze.

Was in NYC recently and someone suggested walking across Brooklyn Bridge. I would rather swim

I can walk over bridges with water under them but hate being in a vehicle. I have to lift my feet up off the floor , assume that's a vibration weird thing!

SnowFrogJelly · 25/01/2025 01:19

Small lifts.. long escalators in tube stations

and leeches if in more exotic climes.

We have leeches here! They are horrible things to be fair

I expressed my fear of mirrors at night, particularly in the dark, on page 6 of this thread. I'm glad to see others share the same fear!

neilyoungismyhero · 25/01/2025 01:25

Butterflies and moths. I panic if they come inside the house. I just can't cope.
Not keen on them in my small garden area either. Went to Sark once and without a word of a lie a few chased me down the road on my bike. To this day have no idea why.
Not keen on small birds flapping near me either but not a big issue with them.

Love frogs but find mirrors suspicious, untrustworthy things, sinister is right word, I never look properly in them.

I hated mirrors as a child! Especially two mirrors facing each other and going on forever

Bolton strid. Fucking haunts me.

TheWaterIsEverywhere · 25/01/2025 01:41

I’d never realised it until other posters brought them up but empty swimming pools and spillways make my blood run cold.

Standing at the bottom of a tall building and looking straight up makes me feel sick and shivery.

I’m not sure if it counts as a fear but driving over roadkill makes me physically sick. I get panicky if I see any in the distance and know I won’t be able to avoid it. Once I’ve driven over it I gag and have to stop myself throwing up, sometimes for several minutes after. Even thinking about it now is making me queasy.

Ugh! Me too. I'm ok with honeycomb but not seed heads, coral, even blocks of flats if all the windows are dark! The holes make me feel hot and panicky and sick.

Also strong winds. So the past day has been a nightmare for me.

Seacatt · 25/01/2025 02:16

Any heights. I would be scared I would take a mad turn and want to jump off, or that someone would push me off.
We climbed Ben Nevis, I had to sit down at the top. My DP was right at the edge, I was terrified for him!

Seacatt · 25/01/2025 02:20

This is the type of height I was thinking of!

Intrusive thoughts are fun aren't they

YouOKHun · 25/01/2025 02:27

@harlacem0507 your fear of large structures isn't so uncommon - Megalophobia. There is a programme on Channel 4 at the moment about a Dutch phobia treatment clinic. They use a flooding method combined with a one-off beta blocker. Someone upthread mentioned balloons (another common phobia I've come across a few times), on the programme they very successfully treated a life long balloon phobic.

Yes that’s same as me-If I can feel the moment it scares me out of it. And always when I’m most tired!

Me too
