Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

Worms….uuurgh! It’s actually a phobia of anything that wriggles. When it rains I run along squealing when I see them.

Worms for me too!

But I'm not bothered about snakes!

The filter /grate thingie in a swimming pool , cos when they close the pool they open the grate and let the sharks in.

Years ago we took the DC to Butlins and we were able to go for a swim in the evening ( it was only open to Gold residents ) so we had the pool pretty much to ourselves ,
I was going round the oval rapids track on my own, pretending I was Rebecca Adlington , I looked down and there was a grey , long smooth shape below me ......
I have never got out of a pool so quick ShockIt was a pattern on the tiles Blush.

I live in Bedfordshire too. The Cardington hangers are huge!!
I have a fear of slugs! They're harmless but they gross me out way too much!

Crumpets. Not afraid, but they make me cringe and feel really uncomfortable. It's the holes.

that's Trypophobia. quite a common one.

Shityshitybangbang · 26/01/2025 00:15

Half built houses on an empty estate. Just creepy lol

thaegumathteth · 26/01/2025 00:16

Toads really freak me out. I know they won't hurt me so not sure it's a fear more a strong repulsion. Also bananas.

wholettheturnipsburn · 26/01/2025 00:18

The Castlecary arches. I'm convinced that's where I'll meet my end

Hermitta · 26/01/2025 00:22

Butterflies - pretty flying spiders. I'm fine as long as they don't come near my face.

Daddy long legs - Drunken stretched-out flying spiders, that LIVE to drag their gangly appendages across my face.

Bats. Or rather rabies they can carry. But people think they're cute and harmless!

I'm not going to recommend you go around trying to pick them up, but to reassure, they don't "attack" people. they rarely even bite when being examined during a population survey, and it doesn't tend to break the skin because their teeth are so tiny (and you're wearing thin gloves)
in the UK, it's only been found in one species out of 18 we have, and antibodies have been found in one other, but no active infections.
unless you're handling bats for some reason (eg. wildlife rescue, checking roosts etc, in which case you'd be vaccinated) then you are very unlikely to come into contact with them, less so to be bitten.
just if you find a grounded one, use thick gloves to move them to a safe place, and contact a local wildlife rescue for advice.

Ooh we used to have bats in the garden , the NDN had a huge tree which they might have taken shelter in. It was in late summer evenings when DD and I were putting the guinea-pigs to bed , just as it was getting dark and before the foxes came visiting .

It was amazing to see the bats flying they are much smaller than I imagined .

Though the guinea-pigs were not impressed "Stop looking at those flying Chiropteras , little show offs " they said " just get us in our shed and let us have supper , we've been busy eating grass and we;'re tired now . And don;t you bats keep us awake with your super sonic high picked noise"

(Guinea pigs don;t have supersonic hearing but they can hear a bag of parsley open from three rooms away ) Grin
And they are far far too fat to fly !

CrowleyKitten · 26/01/2025 01:06

Pipistrelles are teeny tiny. their babies are only about the size of a thumbnail. and they carry them with them when they're flying.

AtomicRuby · 26/01/2025 02:08

I smiled at this because I can imagine my piggies acting the same way! I have three of the little floofs currently but have kept guinea squiggs for most of my life.

AtomicRuby · 26/01/2025 02:22

Mine are:

electricity pylons (they will never not be sinister to me, I was exposed to many PIFs as a child about kids being killed by them and that weird humming noise they make).

lifts I hate, unless I can see out of them. Although I also don't like those paternoster things either. Glass sided lifts only I don't mind. But most aren't like that and I can't manage stairs so I have to suck it up.

I'm almost embarrassed to type this one: escalators. I had a bad experience when fooling around on one as a child. I really hate them now.

Usernamenope · 26/01/2025 07:47

Rockfordpeach · 24/01/2025 22:49

Orcas. Just a picture of them send my heart racing. I used to love swimming in the sea but since this phobia developed, I cannot step foot in the ocean

Me too. The huge black shape swimming under the water and the white patches that look like eyes but aren't. I think they are the only animals that terrify me.

harlacem0507 · 24/01/2025 22:09

See that I feel is similar to my one. I also hate the huge wind turbines!! Especially the ones at sea! Shudders

They remind me of the aliens in war of the worlds which scared the bejesus out of me… just the record and the cover 😬

VolcanoJapan · 26/01/2025 08:25

High sided lorries

I've just been googling th em. I saw one tiny baby with its mouth open and tiny tongue. I've just bit my finger with cute aggression. 😂.

GiddyRobin · 26/01/2025 23:15

Wasps and spiders. I've never been stung by a wasp, but the way they aggressively chase you and dart about makes me feel ill. Spiders, because I've been bitten by one and I'm allergic to them. I've got a massive scar on my leg with thanks to one of those fuckers - even caught the little shit that did it. I was very poorly.

I love horror films and horror in general, but I hate a long dark corridor opposite a bathroom. And service station loos freak me out as I had a weird experience in one.

GiddyRobin · 26/01/2025 23:20

Reservoirs. The amount of water. Plus those overflow mechanisms where the water rushes somewhere below.

Yes, agree with this too. Used to live nearby to one and I'd get this dead, empty feeling in my stomach when I drove by.

I like the sea, I'm fascinated by it. But it scares me. I'm not a strong swimmer and I'm trying to overcome my fears of it with wild swimming! Loved it in Norway and it's part of my DH's routine there (he's Norwegian), but back in the UK I just...I don't know. The water isn't the same. I just can't bring myself to do it yet, though now I go and sit on a rock and drink tea while he does it. 😆
