Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

Pylons. I was a child of the 80s though and feel sure it stems from a Public Information ad back then.

Slip roads on a motorway
Just thinking about that makes me feel sick

Love frogs but find mirrors suspicious, untrustworthy things, sinister is right word, I never look properly in them.

See that I feel is similar to my one. I also hate the huge wind turbines!! Especially the ones at sea! Shudders

Driving on motorways. I think im a safe component driver. But can’t get my head round driving in motorways. I don’t mind the speed, it’s the joining that gives me the fear. Weird really when you think about it

I’m with you on giant buildings, there are some a few miles from us, not sure what they’re for but I’m always unreasonably shocked and feel sick looking at them 😂and I can’t tear my eyes away even though I don’t want to look at them anymore. Oh and lightbulbs misbehaving - flickering, popping, going dim. Not for me 😂

Scutterbug · 24/01/2025 22:14

Leaving the house alone. I just cannot do it so I’m very isolated. I don’t even know what scares me. Being looked at maybe?

k1233 · 24/01/2025 22:15

Snakes, spiders, ho hum whatever. In Australia our spiders a huge and snakes deadly, but not an issue.

Frogs, toads and grasshoppers - scream and run away.

There was a toad in my dog's paddle pool once. Obviously had to get it out. Had a rake so it couldn't get me. I'd touch it, it would move, I'd scream, drop the rake and run away. Amused my neighbour for the next 20 mins till I finally managed to wrangle the murderous thing onto the rake and fling it over the fence.

I also have a grasshopper scream that the pets will come running to and save me.

Grates and filters in swimming pools. Can't go near them.

The duty free at Gatwick Airport. They have it set up so you have to walk through it, and there are at least 2 bends so you can’t see the way out, and feel like you are going further and further in the wrong direction. All with tinny music and flashing lights. Uuurgh.

Battersea Power Station..... Sad

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2025 22:16

Butterflies. I understand they are very pretty and graceful, but the way they flap about, especially if one ends up inside - no.

Slightly more common but I am really frightened of needles. I had to be taken into a separate room and skip the queue to get my Covid jabs, and when I needed bloods done at a hospital appointment the consultant had to send a medical student off to get me juice and a biscuit because I was in such a state, then he (student) had to hold my hand while the nurse did the draw. I am a 51 year old woman in a professional job, and this was in 2017.

ItsByThere · 24/01/2025 22:19

Oil rigs. Obviously they aren’t things you see much of, but the thought of them I hate, also the deep sea when they say it’s miles down and cruise ships. All the same theme!

Balloons. That's the only thing in the world except tarantulas & snakes. It's not the actual balloon, it's the potential it'll go 'bang'. Small children with balloons, especially when they're dragging them along the floor, make me silently sweat x
