Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

I've also got a fear of driving and getting lost, and as I have no sense of direction whatsoever, it'll probably come true one day 😅 I've relied on sat nav for the past 20 odd years of driving, so heaven help me if I lost my sat nav and had to map read while driving! I'd never go anywhere unfamiliar again! 😅

Oh, and mould. I seem to find it oddly terrifying, and I get weird anxious visions of being infected by some hideous mould type illness.

Actually, even worse - i have a huge fear of eating anything that might infect me (hence the CJD fear), so anything like parasites, tapeworm, or something awful like that brings me out in a cold sweat. I'd just be imagining the squirming tiny parasites wriggling their way into my brain or eyes or something...! (God, I'm getting reminded of that damn slugs book now!) 😅😬😳

Viviandcoco · 25/01/2025 00:13

The Blackpool Wurlitzer - the way it rises up through the floor and the horrible sound it makes 🤢

Puffalicious · 25/01/2025 00:14

Has anyone mentioned submarines yet? Absolutely no idea why. I'm not a scaredy kind of person- no issues with spiders/ dark/ snakes/ heights etc. I'm an advanced scuba diver, so very proficient in water, but for some inexplicable reason I'm terrified of submarines. They're not likely to pop up whilst I'm cold water dipping in the loch/ shore, but I'm STILL terrified.

Being ON a submarine would be equally awful.

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 25/01/2025 00:15

Grapes.
I was terrified of my children eating them for years after learning of a tragic choking incident. I'm still a bit uncomfortable around seeing kids eating them

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 25/01/2025 00:15

Oh yeah, another odd one - insomnia 😬😳 I had huge breakdown after a head injury and post concussion syndrome gave me dreadful insomnia (when I didn't sleep for nearly 4 days) and anxiety, so the thought of it happening again makes me really scared.

The spillways in the Ladybower Reservoir. I’ve never been there but just looking at a photo of them makes me feel ill.

My DH has an intense phobia of belly buttons.

@harlacem0507 look up megalophobia. That’s what your fear is. I have it too.

Also submechanophobia. That’s a fear of man-made objects fully or partially submerged under water. TERRIFIES me.

larger than life objects submerged under water would probably finish me.

Motorways

and @MrsKarlUrban & @Shityshitybangbang

Yes, and it's not an irrational fear.

Popadomorbread · 25/01/2025 00:22

Blue bottle flies. They are going to fly into my ears and lay eggs. I even have both of my tragus’s pierced so it would be harder for them to get through. If I know there is one in the room I wear earplugs. Completely irrational but it makes me sick thinking about it.

Navigating inside unfamiliar buildings. I have a very underdeveloped sense of direction and often get lost in hospitals, schools, offices and the like. Even finding my way to the loos and back to my table in a pub is a huge challenge!

Preciousmoments18 · 25/01/2025 00:33

Coriander. It's not a fear although even the idea of biting into fresh Coriander is enough to make me vomit.🤮 I mainly cook from fresh but woud love to be able to buy a cook in Thai curry sauce that didn't contain this revolting herb. It's not even popular in Thai cooking. Please chefs & food manufactures, just stop it

ThatAgileLimeCat · 25/01/2025 00:33

Fans. Bastard things blowing bastard fake air on me. Spinning ones can totally fuck right off.
And ants. Something that small with that much strength? And that intelligent? Fuck. Right. Off.

Liking or not liking coriander is genetic.

I can't stand the stuff either

A genetic variant near olfactory receptor genes influences cilantro preference - Flavour

Background The leaves of the Coriandrum sativum plant, known as cilantro or coriander, are widely used in many cuisines around the world. However, far from being a benign culinary herb, cilantro can be polarizing—many people love it while others claim...

I have what apparently is megalophobia... of huge wind turbines. Driving near them on the motorway near me makes me shake and feel sick. I cannot look at them. The blades make me feel jittery. I once made myself watch someone filming inside of one on a reel with one in the ocean and I was cringing the entire time.

The tiny ones on farms do not bother me so I've deduced it's the sheer size.

Yes I know how strange it is.

I find wind turbines sexy. That's surely even more weird. Can't explain it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/01/2025 00:43

Snakes in water . I'm fine with snakes on land but watersnakes are triangular which is all shades of wrong .

And when people have a small doorway like in a loft extension. When I have a nightmare there's always something behind the small doors

Catsandcannedbeans · 25/01/2025 00:44

Hair.
Not like when it’s on my head, but when I have to take it out the drain or de hair my hairbrush. It makes me physically sick. I’ve never actually had to de hair my own hairbrush. My mum did it for me, then when I moved out whenever my friend would come over to get ready for a night out I would leave the room and she would do it, now my partner does it.
The first time he stayed at my house he mentioned how the hairbrush had so much hair on it, so I told him about my fear and he did it for me, along with all the drains. True love.

Bridges with water under them

And the time 23.23 (titally freaks.me out). Or 11.23

TheDogdidGood · 25/01/2025 00:53

Closed toilet lids. I think I’m going to find a severed head. I blame this on the policeman who visited our school when I was six and he said a child crossed the road without looking, got hit by a car and his head got cut off. How this got tied into closed toilet lids is beyond me though!

Incakewetrust · 25/01/2025 00:54

Bridges. I'm not terrified to the point of panic attacks but there's a bridge over a dual carriageway locally that many people have jumped off. Whenever I drive under it, I half expect someone to land on my car and I always brace myself and wince. I'm the same when I drive under all bridges now.

Deep water terrifies me. I love looking at the ocean but can't go in it. You have no idea what's beneath you or how far down it is and I absolutely hate that.

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 25/01/2025 00:54

I also have a fear of mirrors at night. Too many horror films! I stare into the sink when I brush my teeth at night Blush
