Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

Snakes, spiders, ho hum whatever. In Australia our spiders a huge and snakes deadly, but not an issue.

Frogs, toads and grasshoppers - scream and run away.

There was a toad in my dog's paddle pool once. Obviously had to get it out. Had a rake so it couldn't get me. I'd touch it, it would move, I'd scream, drop the rake and run away. Amused my neighbour for the next 20 mins till I finally managed to wrangle the murderous thing onto the rake and fling it over the fence.

I also have a grasshopper scream that the pets will come running to and save me.

Edited

How about those salt water crocs though. They a bit scary no?

bigkahunaburger · 24/01/2025 22:23

Driving generally. I do drive, but I hate it - it terrifies me mostly. So I stick with essential driving only. The mere thought of driving in London completely terrifies me so I dont do it.

Places where they do real life jump scares, and come up behind you, touch you etc - like in the London Dungeons. Fucking awful.

Religious horror movies. Im a staunch athiest, yet really enjoy a terrifying jump scare based around evil nuns/priests/demons/exorcisms and shit. Whats that about??

HUGE fear about getting lost. I have dyspraxia so I can and do regularly get lost in shopping centres, and places Ive never been before. I can never find my car either. Just thinking about it fills me with dread.

Eels. I lived in Australia for a long time and we had eels and they scared the crap out of me. Snapping turtles hurt but were cute so they were forgiven. But eels......eeeewwww.

Male kangaroos. Being face to face with them in the bush is absolutely terrifying - as is huge emus - because they look at you and stare you down and if so inclined could kill you. And the males have ridiculous muscles - they honestly look fake when f2f. Scary.

Sydney Harbour Bridge. Driving over that nearly made me pass out with fear it was so so fast and terrifying. The lanes are so close.

ioveelephants · 24/01/2025 22:23

Birds and hole / empty swimming pools 😵

admirible · 24/01/2025 22:23

Bridges, especially small narrow ones, have to breath in and walk like on a tight rope.

Localguide2025 · 24/01/2025 22:25

Water towers
electricity / telephone poles 😟

CatsForLife · 24/01/2025 22:25

Escalators. Terrified of getting shoelace or something stuck in them and being dragged through the teeth to a painful death. Also them stopping suddenly. There are some shops where you can’t avoid them. And the going down ones that do that sort of weird rise like going over a hill at the start. No thanks pal.

24Dogcuddler · 24/01/2025 22:25

Weird one! Fairground organs. Absolutely no idea why but seeing one, even on TV, absolutely terrifies me.

The duty free at Gatwick Airport. They have it set up so you have to walk through it, and there are at least 2 bends so you can’t see the way out, and feel like you are going further and further in the wrong direction. All with tinny music and flashing lights. Uuurgh.

And the smell.....urgh

murasaki · 24/01/2025 22:28

Plane toilets. I know in reality they're not going to suck me in and out of the plane arse first but I have developed the bladder control of a camel to avoid them. 9 hours to Canada with no loo trip? Better than the alternative.

Squirrels. But this is justified as one ran past me into the house, took up residence behind a radiator for two days, scrabbled while I was on work teams calls and made me scream, and DP wouldn't come home to remove it when it first came in (ok, I was being unreasonable then) and was shit at removing it afterwards.

Countrygirlatheart1 · 24/01/2025 22:28

Watching someone or something go under water in films/documentaries. Going from above water to the underwater I have to look away. Oh and having to do it myself. Blurrgh.

Superfoodie123 · 24/01/2025 22:28

Lots of holes and bumps close together

There used to be an ad on Tv for safety on escalators, it showed a little girl falling down one and getting caught in the teeth at the bottom, the end shot was just one of her shoes, really fucking scary maybe in the late 1970’s

Oh lord I just googled them, they are TERRIFYING!!! I think we might have the same type of fears, wind turbines, oil rigs at sea, pylons, water towers. Nightmare stuff!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/01/2025 22:30

The Hoover Dam spillway.
A massive overflow hole that could swallow a double-decker bus. (Not that it is needed now as Lake Mead is at an all time low.)

I was going to include a picture but I can't bring myself to look for one!

Escalators and downward slopes and steps for me. When I had counselling for it it turns out it's linked to childhood SA for a lot of people. Which I was a victim of, so there's that.

ProseccoAndStew · 24/01/2025 22:30

Those blood pressure machines. I saw one even on TV and could feel my blood pressure rising rapidly. Completely illogical, I know.

AQuickDeathInTexas · 24/01/2025 22:30

Grates and filters in swimming pools. Can't go near them.

I'm the same, I rarely use a swimming pool however I can't bear them, they make me feel unsettled and uneasy.

Frogs. Just writing the word makes me shudder

Google eyed frogs..ha ha ha ha..

MrsSethGecko · 24/01/2025 22:31

Slime, and water slides. I'll cheerfully deal with all your bugs and creepy things, blood, needles, vomit, whatever. Keep your bastard slime away.

lopyrs · 24/01/2025 22:32

Being somewhere without a toilet, sadly creates a lot of genuine anxiety and restricts me 😩

There are always doors to the side so of duty free at every airport so you can bypass it. It serves as a route for fast track and disabled passengers too. You can now travel without fear.

raffegiraffe · 24/01/2025 22:33

I'm not scared of them but I have a phobia of sponge. Even the word gives me goosebumps. Foam is similar. I absolutely hate it. Cleaning ones are the worst. I think it's a texture thing. It has a name I can't remember but it means fear of things with small holes

Disneydatknee88 · 24/01/2025 22:33

DH has a phobia of blu tac. Never have i heard of this before but it is a legitimate fear. We can't bring it into the house and everytime he starts a new job he has to explain it to people so they don't have it around him. No idea how it originated. He can't remember either.

MiddlingMarch · 24/01/2025 22:35

Moths
I have a genuine fear (even though I know they aren't real) of vampires and zombies.
