Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

I’m fine with stairs and fine with escalators but walking down broken / stopped escalators totally terrifies me - I have to do it clutching the handrail and two feet on each step before moving down the next one. It just feels so wrong.

Preciousmoments18 · 25/01/2025 09:19

I've just remembered as a young child I was terrified of feathers, any feathers but especially huge single feathers found on the street. I had no fear of birds & don't know where it came from,no issue now thankfully.

MinnieCauldwell · 25/01/2025 09:19

@harlacem0507 Yes to the Cardington hangars I grew up around them, also the story of the 101 crashing, at school we were taken to see all the charred remains of silver serving stuff. In fact air ships creep me out.

Submarines freak me out, even just photos. I used to sail off shore a lot as a teen and saw one break the surface...

Justleaveitblankthen · 25/01/2025 09:19

Slugs are an abomination, but the teeny tiny newborns are cute 🥰
Snotty noses on babies and toddlers.
I can't look anywhere near them.

Other Drivers at traffic lights who pass the time picking and eating the contents of their nose 🤢

Blackpool sea, especially after dark. The way it's only stopped by the wall and continues to thrash against it until the tide turns.
Horrific.

Justleaveitblankthen · 25/01/2025 09:21

Oh and those Anthony Gormley Statues on Crosby beach that are constantly drowned by the incoming tide 😱

FranticFrankie · 25/01/2025 09:24

Yes yes yes to this!! I thought it was just me Confused even if I see a house on Rightmove with one of these horrors, I cringe. And they seem to be fashionable. The higher up they are, the scarier.
Also pylons - shudder. Hate the buzzing if you get too close. Which I never do. Obviously.
And bridges over roads, especially with traffic zooming along underneath them
(those hangars are a bit Shock OP)

FranticFrankie · 25/01/2025 09:25

Aargh I thought I’d quoted the poster mentioning the high cistern toilets! Not sure what happened there

Poppymeldrum · 25/01/2025 09:34

Tin foil
Even writing it out makes me feel sick
It's the thought of it either touching me or feeling it between my teeth
Apparently my parents made a guy fawkes when I was tiny and left it in the bath
I was that frightened of it,it put my potty training back by 6 months as I refused to go into the toilet
Normal parents would have got rid but mine thought it was funny
They'd made its face out of foil and I'm sure that's where it stems from

Cannot bear needles
I wanted my ears re-pierced and dp had to hold my hand with one hand and pass me the tissues with the other
He treated me to a stiff drink and biscuits afterwards like a child
I'm 47,have kids and hold down a full time job

Going to the toilet in the night
I would rather piss myself than get up,but that's disgusting so I force myself to get up
I have to be able to see down the stairs and have every light on
Its in case a ghost or a burglar come round the corner and attack me
I then have to snap all the lights back off in turn as I get back into bed, having woken half the house

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/01/2025 09:52

Crumpets. Not afraid, but they make me cringe and feel really uncomfortable. It's the holes.

Pablova · 25/01/2025 09:57

ThatRosePanda · 24/01/2025 23:52

I’ve never met someone else who’s afraid. So hard to avoid them

I am fearful of fish, all marine life in fact.
i cannot be the same room as even a fist bowl with gold fish and don’t get me started on dead fish on display on packed ice 🤢

IsoldeWagner · 25/01/2025 09:58

Motorways

Me too. Terrifying.

rahlikeatiger · 25/01/2025 10:00

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2025 22:16

Butterflies. I understand they are very pretty and graceful, but the way they flap about, especially if one ends up inside - no.

Slightly more common but I am really frightened of needles. I had to be taken into a separate room and skip the queue to get my Covid jabs, and when I needed bloods done at a hospital appointment the consultant had to send a medical student off to get me juice and a biscuit because I was in such a state, then he (student) had to hold my hand while the nurse did the draw. I am a 51 year old woman in a professional job, and this was in 2017.

I will stand by this. Butterflies, moths - dirty, filthy and wrong. Nothing pretty about them. Can’t even look at films/pictures of them. 🤮🤢🤢🤢

Allschoolsareartschools · 25/01/2025 10:16

Definitely pylons, I can see faces in them.
I'm equally scared & fascinated by tower blocks as well.

IsoldeWagner · 25/01/2025 10:19

Reservoirs. The amount of water. Plus those overflow mechanisms where the water rushes somewhere below.

Fgfgfg · 25/01/2025 10:42

UnicornWorld · 25/01/2025 02:27

Intrusive thoughts are fun aren't they

There's a bit of motorway I drive on regularly which is raised and the usual barrier is someway down the slope leaving me free to drive straight over the edge and fly across the fields. Terrifying but strangely exhilarating compulsion similar to the people who want to jump off buildings and cliffs. I can't tell DP because he'd never get in the car again but I did tell a friend and he admitted the same.

Incakewetrust · 25/01/2025 12:53

Just remembered another!
As a child, Mr Blobby would terrify me. When I was about 4/5, I was at a birthday party and they sat us all down and out came Mr Blobby and I screamed like I was being murdered. My mum had to leave my sisters with another parent and take me home as I was so hysterical.
To this day, he still creeps the f out of me.

catgirl1976 · 25/01/2025 13:07

Sharks.

Which I don’t think is unreasonable as they are quite chompy and scary BUT I am scared of them when swimming in things like European or English lakes, rivers and swimming pools.

I'm not scared of this, but it does feel uncomfortable. I think it's because when they stop it, the height of the stairs is taller than usual so it feels clunky to walk down, and I always worry I'll misjudge it and trip.

MyProudHare · 25/01/2025 13:33

Truth be told, I've never quite gotten over the various terrorist attacks in London (where I live) and still feel on edge sometimes on the tube, and particularly being in the London Bridge area. I hope that doesn't sound too ridiculous. I've never asked anyone else if they are still bothered by these things.

YouOKHun · 25/01/2025 13:59

@MyProudHare I doubt you're alone in that concern. I find that generally I don't think about it but every now and again I find myself looking at other passengers and at the routine boredom of public transport and thinking about the randomness and the possibility of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and in key places where things have happened it's pretty difficult not to feel vulnerable, even if it is fleeting.

You're not being ridiculous. In fact any kind of anxiety or phobia is not ridiculous, it's just human.

K0OLA1D · 25/01/2025 14:01

Falling over

seelookhearboo · 25/01/2025 15:45

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 25/01/2025 00:15

Grapes.
I was terrified of my children eating them for years after learning of a tragic choking incident. I'm still a bit uncomfortable around seeing kids eating them

Hotdogs are high on the danger list too :(

seelookhearboo · 25/01/2025 15:46

Bats. Or rather rabies they can carry. But people think they're cute and harmless!

seelookhearboo · 25/01/2025 15:46

I'm not sure this thread is helping my anxieties 🤣

Fountofwisdom · 25/01/2025 15:49

Dogs. Have been scared of them since I was a tiny child. I walk in a forest regularly and am terrified if I see a dog off the lead approaching me. I wish dog owners would be more considerate and not assume that everyone wants to fawn over their dogs.
