To believe my house is haunted?

rockpops · 18/01/2025 00:02

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

Hey it could defo be. I'd be getting a scholar in to pray it away to protect yourselves.

A scholar?

TeeBee · 19/01/2025 04:24

OP, do you cast TV programs from your phone? So many times I've woken to my TV blaring downstairs and realised I've accidentally cast from another room and it's turned my TV back on. It's freaked me out a few times.

Yep. Nothing like an academic for boring a ghost to death.

I work with a guy who kept getting slapped around the face when there was no one there. I told him that whoever it was was trying to show their presence,he should go home that night and say out loud that he acknowledges they are there ,he wishes them no ill and he hopes they can coexist peacefully. He looked at me as if I was mad but did it anyway and hasn't been slapped since!

I'd I was the sort of ghost who slapped a stranger id have carried on even if he'd said that to me. Surely the best way to co exist is to not let on you're there at all if you're a ghost?

Tootruetoberreal · 19/01/2025 10:28

All of the people with detailed ghost stories, do you have it on camera? This is surely the first thing you would do, rather than hearing it every night, and wondering what it is.

Calm down, I meant to write science hasn't proved, not proved; I missed the word "hasn't" out. No need to jump down my throat.😂 Have a great evening!

I’m imagining the movie version of PP story now - The Slapper. Feels like a franchise thing to me.Grin

That’d be v boring though. If I was a ghost id be door slamming and chucking vases at every opportunity just to pas the time.

I have several ghost stories, some which could be explained others not.
Several were before camera phones existed.
Others where it happened so quickly that there’s no chance to whip a phone out.

One is going on now but happens infrequently and undramatically and there is no way of getting footage of it without installing night vision cctv (although if someone wants to buy one for me I’ll happily set it up!).

No film is going to confirm or deny existence of ghosts. Phone camera quality isn’t always good, particularly at night or at a distance. If the image is too good it isn’t believed because AI or photoshop.

As in life I'd be an annoying git in death.
I would shift stuff, leave cupboard doors open, leave the toilet seat up, and any other ghostly annoyance I could think of.👻

Costcolover · 19/01/2025 12:33

@Tootruetoberreal What's the point in getting any of it on camera? There will ALWAYS be some people who will say "I can see the strings" & "Obviously fake"

No, but it may help the home owner find the source of the noise, whether they have rodents coming out in the night, or objects moving etc.

Everyone seems to be fixated on ghosts.
Why assume that paranormal events are caused by the dead?
We live in an extraordinary world, with things seen and unseen, some of which occasionally interact with us. Whether you try to explain by science or by woo, it doesn't matter.
I am always amused by those who insist bombastically that there are no such things. Perhaps they are protesting too much?

To me it just sounds like a collection of explainable things that have understandably given you the creeps. It' is unnerving when appliances randomly turn on by themselves, I've had it with our TV before and it was down to the kids setting a timer for 3am in the morning!! It kept coming on full blast too!! I'll be honest I was scared stiff till I realised what had happened 🙈.
As for toys turning on by themselves I've got 4 kids and about a billion toys! This has happened several times always the creepiest sounding ones too! I'm sure the toy manufacturers do it on purpose to scare the shit out of parents 🤣.
I would as others have suggested check your wiring and make sure carbon monoxide monitors are working. If you still feel things aren't right get the house blessed.

This is silly. Which of us sceptics wouldn’t be absolutely fascinated to encounter evidence of unsuspected paranormal ‘unseen forces’? It would be an intriguing and worldview-exploding expansion to what is known about the world. There seems to be a weird assumption on Mn by ‘woo’ believers that sceptics (1) have either never encountered anything paranormal or (2) are heavily invested in not believing. Why would we be?

Show me credible evidence and I’ll be fascinated. Show me a series of minor tech glitches and noises encountered by a clearly unnerved poster living in a new house whose quirks she’s unfamiliar with, and who is stringing unrelated events together into a ‘ghost’ narrative, and I’ll continue in my scepticism.

There are issues in my house. Ages ago I asked the local minister to visit but she just laughed (which made me feel ridiculous). Then o discovered my house had been mentioned in an academic book about haunting. FFS.

Name of this academic book please?

You’ve just reminded me of a toy DS had when he was a toddler — one of those farmyard wooden puzzles where the pieces made animal noises when you removed them. It kept going off downstairs in the middle of the night with no one near, and making the most gruesome noises (electronic cow mooing at 3 am sounds like the wailing of damned souls when it’s just woken you).

I figured out eventually (when it nearly gave me a heart attack by baaing in the dark when I was making a sick DS some milk in the early hours) that it was light-sensitive, and had on this occasion been triggered by the fridge light coming on. When no one was downstairs it probably got triggered by a neighbours’ security light going on when a fox or cat passed through the garden.

I wonder if any theoretical physicists who support String Theory and the proposal of multiple dimensions would get told they're mentally ill if they suggested these unexplained phenomena were related. Brian Cox is one, Stephen Hawking was another.

I wonder whether Stephen Hawking would have concluded his house was haunted if his Lego fell over and his fish robot toy occasionally turned on.

Giggorata · 19/01/2025 14:55

I think that a lot of people are heavily invested in being dismissive and rude about these and other subjects, especially online. Makes them feel they've scored points, or something.
And I think that a lot of other people are uncomfortable at some level, conscious or not, and do the equivalent of hand over ears, going “lalala”

I have numerous woo experiences, some of which I may even have mentioned on here, but whether people believe me or not doesn’t matter to me.

Those sceptics who would like to see evidence have opportunities to do their own investigations and be fascinated, maybe even convinced. If they can be arsed.

I'll pm you ( I have quite a few possibly 'traceable' threads on MN atm)

I'm hoping to sell my house this year & I'd rather not advertise it as 'possibly haunted', although no doubt my current neighbours would gleefully 'tell' any new occupant the way they 'told' me?

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 19/01/2025 15:57

Go to any church and ask for help. They will give you the number of the specialist clergy dealing with this in your area. Been there. They take it very seriously. I was told there are 3 things that are commonplace for such experoences as yours. Building work that alters the original layout of the house, discord and the presence of children. Good Luck Op.

2pence · 19/01/2025 16:26

Highly unlikely that Stephen Hawking would conclude that @Hanto, given that he was interested in String Theory, Dark Matter and Blackholes and what our Universe contains. If he'd argue that Strings collide would you snort derisively at that and pat yourself on your back by upholding your own superior belief system that there's no more for us to discover?

There was a good old sneer from another poster earlier ( sorry I forget your name ) who wondered if their own fixed mindset could be fixed by waving some sage around. Well, maybe. What works for some people doesn't work for others. Sage, prayer, manifestation, the Higgs Boson, to each their own.
