To believe my house is haunted?

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

Maria Kerry 🫠😂 my post was too long to read back for typos so thank you to anyone who’s actually read in full. I get it I know many people don’t believe in such things but I’ve genuinely never experienced anything like this before

Is your TV switched off at the socket? If not start doing that.

Change the channel/frequency on your baby monitor

Check the draught excluders on your doors and windows

Bleed your radiators

Keep the dog in your bedroom with you at night

Get a humidifier to reduce the static electricity in your house

ETA Get an EMF meter

timetodecide2345 · 18/01/2025 02:42

You will get the dismissive crew on here. No real solution just outright unhelpfulness.

It's scaring you and you feel it's also potentially going to harm your child. Have you spoken with the landlord about your experiences? What about contacting a previous tenant?

Deebee90 · 18/01/2025 03:01

Well I didn’t need to read that at 3am. Urgh burn your house down and run away. That place has a nasty spirit attached to it 100%

MalleusMaleficarumm · 18/01/2025 03:42

yes because ghosts aren’t real.

It’s a series of coincidences, Houses creak and move and toys can malfunction. I have a tv that turns itself on but it’s because the remote is sticky and the buttons get stuck.

LostittoBostik · 18/01/2025 03:52

Get a priest in if it helps you but this is all your anxiety talking. Moving house is stressful!

"We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet."

That tells you everything you need to know. You're finding a nonexistent pattern in the random. Those flappy fish go off all the time for no reason (we've got one). Phones fall of bedside tables.

(Ps: renting to get into a school is horrible behaviour - but that's an aside)

LostittoBostik · 18/01/2025 03:56

Also are you sleep deprived? I suffer from auditory hallucinations when I'm in severe sleep deprivation - it happened to me loads when I had a newborn. One is like a loud bang or crack just as I'm falling asleep. If you google it you'll find this is really common.

GRex · 18/01/2025 04:09

When we moved into this house, the living room felt a bit weird and seemed like it made noise. The electrician found ropy wiring in the plaster of one wall. I would get a plumber to check the gas plus shower and an electrician to check the electrics. Multiple of your events suggest an incident with one or the other, possibly both in a rental.

We’re buying in this area. House purchase fell through so we decided to rent in this area to make sure we could apply on time. What would be even more horrible than your opinion would be driving 40 minutes each way to get my son to school and back 5 days a week 🙃 and waiting years to get him into one of the two small local primary schools.

@LostittoBostikI’ve been sleep deprived since I had my son 4 years ago 😂 But definitely overly stressed as we moved right on top of Christmas.

I can understand the hearing and seeing things being caused by that but it doesn’t explain the TV, shower, toys etc. The remote has to be pressed twice to turn on once for the tv to turn on and again for the sky box so it’s nothing to do with the electrics like everyone is saying. The monitor also wasn’t connected to anything. My son is 4 so as you can imagine has had far too many toys that have never just turned themselves on. If it was just a few things I could rationalise it. There’s more but I don’t want to bore people.

I believe you. Stuff like that happened in one of the houses I lived in.
It scared the shit out of me until one day I got angry and stood up to it and asked it to leave me alone, you can't scare me anymore and please leave.
And it did! Try that, if not definitely get a pastor or priest in for sure.

Mercedes45 · 18/01/2025 05:54

FFS, why did i read this. I'm feeding the baby and the bloody monitor started beeping loudly. However, It was a low battery. Still scared the shit out of me. Light is now on. 😅

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/01/2025 05:59

You need to see a doctor.
Have some tests done.

Much like the electrical items that switch themselves on randomly, something appears to be malfunctioning.

AllEndeavour · 18/01/2025 06:11

Same, sat here in the dark remembering every creepy thing that has happened to me 😆.

A couple of years ago I moved into my house and was regularly up in the night with my 1 year old at the time. For two nights in a row, part way through the night I began to smell unknown perfume when lying in my bed. I hadn't worn perfume since before covid, and it wasn't my one.

We had been moved in for some time at that point, hadn't any clothes near the bed it could be from, and no boxes with perfume in. I even smelt the carpet next to the bed thinking maybe it was old scent that had somehow laid in the carpet and been disturbed but no where and nothing else smelt. It did scare me, so i said out loud that I wanted to be alone with my son please and thankfully that never happened again. The woman who used to live here died years before her husband so I doubt anything could have stayed in the carpet for that long but who knows!

No new advice OP, i'd get the carbon monoxide monitor anyway for peace of mind, just like you would a fire alarm. I'd start turning stuff off at the plug like the pp suggested and the next time something happens I would politely ask for 'them' not to do it anymore as it is scaring you. Whether it is real or works as a placebo, may make you feel better .

Not sure why everyone is being so dismissive. I would get a local priest to come bless the house.

Do people do that?!

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 18/01/2025 06:36

Love a woo story,I'm ok with it as long it's not me experiencing bumps in the night of the spooky variety.👻

BarMonaco · 18/01/2025 06:41

Call Danny Robins

TheaBrandt · 18/01/2025 06:41

We have had unexplained banging and crashing in a holiday house. The owners mother lived there for years and told us it was haunted. We heard the banging before she told us that.

I don’t believe in such things but honestly there was no explanation. Sounded like someone putting away a shop in a mood. No it wasn’t pipes..

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 18/01/2025 06:46

I think even to make yourself feel better, you might need to call a priest to bless the house.

When I was a teenager, I used to hear someone breathing in my bedroom for years. It made my hair stand on end but I never felt it was threatening. It was very creepy though. I told my mum and she came to my bedroom one night and told it to go away and never come back. I never heard it again.

muddyford · 18/01/2025 06:46

Every Church of England diocese has access to an exorcist. Contact your local vicar and go from there. A close friend was the diocesan exorcist locally.

Didimum · 18/01/2025 06:55

These things have likely all happened in other environments, OP, except you haven’t paid them any mind because you didn’t have the belief that you were living in a haunted house. Now you do believe this so you are going to attribute everything to it.

Everything in your post has an explanation. Appliances can turn themselves on and off with power surges, overloaded circuits and stuck loops – have you had an electrical survey? (if you care to). Things used to turn on or off in our house when we first moved in – it was an overloaded circuit.

We also had a shower that has turned itself on – it’s because the mains water is too high a bar for the shower pipes.

I don’t see anything that weird about anything you’ve written. But I do understand getting the heebiejeebies sometimes and it isn’t pleasant.

Have you checked to see if the house has been built on an old indian burial ground?
Next thing to check - has anyone died there in tragic circumstances?
Is the rent to good to be true, ie about half market rate of similar properties?
Do the neighbours give you pitying looks or icy stares, has a grizzled old man told you to be careful?
Do people whisper about you in the local shop?
If none of these apply your house probably isn't haunted!!!
