To believe my house is haunted?

rockpops · 18/01/2025 00:02

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

You know it’s not haunted. Grow up.

Do you have a religious faith, @GutsyShark ?

That’s a rather personal question but no I don’t.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/01/2025 14:49

In which case, fair enough, you’re consistent @GutsyShark

I’ve been surprised over the years at the number of people who believe in a god or gods but flat out refuse to entertain the idea of ghosts/spirits, etc.

Well I don’t. And believe it or not my original reply was intended to be helpful (admittedly I could and probably should have phrased it in a nicer way) but I think it’s silly to indulge this nonsense and a short sharp shock I think is sometimes useful.

George?

Can you ‘retire’ from being a clairvoyant?

Hi yes it means I don't read any more
Yes i still get things coming to me.
It don't leave you.
George, my guiden angel told me he was. once was on that land.. Living along time ago.

You need to listen to uncanny on bbc sounds some of the stories, one of the more recent Christmas episodes links very much to what you have said.

I wouldn't leave your children alone in rooms after listening to it. One little two year old asked his mum to stop the lady crying at the end of his bed. She heard a woman singing to him on the baby monitor!

Tell the spirit to go into the light . I read somewhere that the spirit is afraid to go into the light . Perhaps get a priest to come to the house and bless it .

It cracks me up that people who wouldn’t set foot inside a church of any stripe from one year to the next default to suggesting ringing up vicars or Catholic priests the second there’s an unsettling creak — as though they’re some kind of sprit equivalent of Rentokill.

Sneer as much as you like . Unless you've experienced you don't know what you are talking about.

That’s what I’m going to say to the doctor next time she tells me I’m ill. If she’s never had the disease she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

Meltingslush · 21/01/2025 09:59

@GutsyShark

You visit a doctor because you are ill , not to be told you are ill. All I'm saying is unless you have had a paranormal experience don't judge .

SharpWriter · 21/01/2025 10:08

Not long after I moved into my current house, my TV started turning itself on in the middle of the night. Scared the shit out of me to suddenly hear voices downstairs. It's a thing though - if you do a Google search there are a number of reasons and things you can do to fix it.

Not judging. I’m saying there are no such things as paranormal experiences.

How conveniently vague.

But listen believe in whatever nonsense you choose. Up to you. Makes no difference to me.

But nearly everyone has had odd coincidences, heard noises or felt draughts whose source isn’t obvious, had pets or young children barking or waving at nothing, got unnerved in new or unfamiliar surroundings, had things involving batteries or electricity go off unexpectedly — they’re just not stringing unrelated incidents together into a narrative, frightening themselves into looking out for other occurrences and dubbing it ‘supernatural’.

Like I’ve said up the thread that I more than once got a horrible fright in the small hours when light from a neighbour’s security light made a light-sensitive toy downstairs come to life. Only realised what was causing it by giving myself an even bigger light fright opening the fridge.

Or, newly living in a big old house, very far back from the road and alone with a 7- year old, in midwinter, getting unnerved by continually seeing movement out of the corner of my eye, and only realising months later it was a tree shadow cast through the kitchen window and seeming to run along the wall in windy weather when the sun was at a certain angle. From the hall it was the right size and shape to look like a tall, skinny man.

I’ve also had sleep paralysis, which is horrible, particularly the feeling of menace!

I don’t blame anyone for getting a fright. But these are not supernatural occurrences. The OP has strung together unrelated things, having got nervous, and is now viewing things falling over and electrics and outside noises as a ‘haunting’ only directed at her, rather than the more rational conclusion that these are dodgy electrics, neighbour or street noises etc which the other people living in the house don’t notice, because they don’t view them as any more than separate small events.

It wasn’t that the ghost went away when they had people staying, it was that visitors made noise, so the OP wasn’t listening for sinister creaks, and kept her busy, so she wasn’t noticing neighbours’ noises at 6 pm.

Update - Didn’t manage to get dinner until late last night as my poor little one has chroup and she wanted to feed all night. Everyone was asleep. I was eating on the sofa and hear a faint knocking sound near my sons toy box, ignored it at first but then it started again so I looked over and my daughters car seat was rocking 😩 actually rocking! It’s a heavyish seat and needs a bit of force to actually make it move. The handle of the seat was hitting against an Amazon parcel left hanging off the top of the toy box making the knocking sound.

I don’t even know what to do at this point. I am genuinely terrified. We’re ready to buy just waiting for something we love to come up otherwise we would be moving! DP believes me and said we can move again if I want to but I don’t think I have another move in me knowing it won’t be for long and knowing we’ll have to do it all again. He knows I would never make anything like this up or exaggerate etc and that I’m fully in touch with reality. These things are happening and frequently. I could handle it better or at least try to explain it all away if it wasn’t so often. Our previous house was built on an old hospital and I never experienced anything like this. My mum has experienced many things as young child in her childhood home but still nothing like this.

Luckily we all sleep in the one room as my 4 year old has always refused to sleep in his own bed at night and my daughter is too young for her own room. I would be too scared to let them sleep alone. I already have some sage but I had read that it can potentially make things worse or invite more spirits and I feel the same about getting a priest or clairvoyant possibly making things worse. I also really don’t want to be told anything that could have potentially happened in the house, as that would make me feel even more terrified.

But will try what’s been mentioned so thank you for all the recommendations. I sort of feel paralysed with fear, not wanting to do anything to make it worse, hoping it is just my mind playing tricks on me (but that’s just impossible at this point) and hoping it will just stop.

@rockpops I believe you, and I’m sorry you’re going through this. I know most of MN tend to poo poo the idea of supernatural happenings, but I lived in no less than 3 haunted houses (the house I was growing up in, and 2 rented houses). There’s only so much you can explain away before you start to think actually there isn’t an explanation. And the brain desperately wants there to be an explanation, because then that wouldn’t be scary.

I’ve experienced very similar things to you, toys randomly going off, always at the same time of night, and always when I was on my own. As well as hundreds of other things from when I was a small child up until my mid twenties. I don’t really have any useful advice other than to move, that was the only thing that made it stop. Which was particularly unhelpful in the case of the house I grew up in as being a child, I couldn’t easily just pack my bags and leave, although I was out of there as soon as I turned 18!

At least go and talk to a Cof E priest

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to move. What if it's not the house?

Menobaby79 · 23/01/2025 09:27

TheWholeMealBaby · 18/01/2025 07:04

Have you checked to see if the house has been built on an old indian burial ground?
Next thing to check - has anyone died there in tragic circumstances?
Is the rent to good to be true, ie about half market rate of similar properties?
Do the neighbours give you pitying looks or icy stares, has a grizzled old man told you to be careful?
Do people whisper about you in the local shop?
If none of these apply your house probably isn't haunted!!!

Haha!!! 😂

Hanto · 23/01/2025 09:44

@rockpops, just to reassure you on the issue of ‘hearing about something that happened in the house’, our house has actually has had a murder, and remains entirely unhaunted. Don’t let that idea unnerve you, though I think you’re right, given your current state of mind, not to go around asking the neighbours about your rental’s history.
