To believe my house is haunted?

rockpops · 18/01/2025 00:02

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

Just tell any potential spirit to fuck off. That'll see you right.

Titasaducksarse · 18/01/2025 17:54

I believe you. Happened to someone i know. When she told the spirit to go away or she would get the priest in, it went next door..old terraced house and bothered them.

I've encountered spirits in my childhood home and in my workplace. At home I clear as day heard footsteps across my bedroom floor and someone rustle in the drawer. I was too scared to open eyes but I also had a sense of knowing it was OK.
I'm assuming was same spirit that hid my boyfriends keys. We literally looked everywhere then found them under the tank in the airing cupboard that was in my room.

At work I 100% thought my boss had come up behind me and turned to speak...noone there. I jokily said to a member of staff about the place being haunted....it was apparently but no one had told me that before.

Fordian · 18/01/2025 17:59

Well, I'm sceptic central.

However, I had an event happen to me aged 21 so 40 years ago that had no explanation then, or now. It was a trivial thing, literally an internal door handle of a shut door pushed itself down. 4 people witnessed it. There was no one on the other side.

Crystall88 · 18/01/2025 18:00

Are you the same poster with the sleeping husband? You write really similar!

RamsaySnowsSausage · 18/01/2025 18:18

I'm sorry you are frightened and sorry to sound flippant but what a boring use of the afterlife- tipping boxes and turning on showers to a dribble.

Surely an ex-human would make contact more logically? Must be something else.

Sounds like the cheeky sprites my grandparents used to tell me about- you're supposed to leave a saucer of milk out so they won't prank you. Magically, it was always gone in the morning. Absolutely nothing to do with the dog of course.

I find the paranormal fascinating but I have never experienced anything. I do get auditory hallucinations which would be very scary if I didn't know what they were.

Same here. Now I know it's all just my weird brain it is easier to accept it. At one point I genuinely thought I was possessed by the devil. It was terrifying.

I work with a guy who kept getting slapped around the face when there was no one there. I told him that whoever it was was trying to show their presence,he should go home that night and say out loud that he acknowledges they are there ,he wishes them no ill and he hopes they can coexist peacefully. He looked at me as if I was mad but did it anyway and hasn't been slapped since!

😂😂😂😂😂

Tootruetoberreal · 18/01/2025 18:50

The instances you refer too can all be cleared up with logical explanations. Your house isn't haunted, no matter how much you want it to be.
I wish more than anything ghosts were real, so that my parent who died could visit me. Unfortunately science proves otherwise.

BMW6 · 18/01/2025 19:05

The remote has to be pressed twice to turn on once for the tv to turn on and again for the sky box so it’s nothing to do with the electrics like everyone is saying.

We have exactly the same with our Sky remote. Sometimes I turn the TV and Sky off properly but the TV pops back on. Its annoying but not a haunting - just a Glitch.

Your shower could just be a worn washer.

I honestly do think all these individual oddities are adding up in your head.

If you have ghosts your dog will make it clear.

BelligerentToad · 18/01/2025 19:07

I’m a sceptical believer. I think plenty of cases have a rational explanation.

In your case it could absolutely be increased stress levels and baby hormones that are playing havoc with you.

It doesn’t sound like anything is malevolent, so if there is something if you can do to accept the situation and not feel scared that will probably help.

On the basis of me thoroughly planning my actions should I be in this situation (have a late cat haunting my house but it’s not scary at all and there’s no filmable evidence) here’s what I’d be doing:

Film everything you can.
Contact Danny Robbins (from Uncanny - but do not listen to any of the podcasts if you’re the scared type!).

Favouritefruits · 18/01/2025 19:13

When I was about 15 I was convinced we had a ghost, no turns out it was a burglar. Are you sure nobody has a key? are some right weirdos out there!

fairyup · 18/01/2025 19:21

You'll get two camps of believers and non believers.

Burn sage in all the rooms. Especially the corners of the rooms.

When something happens. Speak out loud and say 'thank you for your visit but I am feeling comfortable, please leave'

I have an immediate solution to your problem.
And I'm very serious.
There are spirits and I understand.

Play the quran very loudly throughout the house. You can go on YouTube and find any surahs/chapters being recited.

Look up how to get rid of jinn with holy quran.

Shout Allahu akbar. Play the quran in every room.
Everywhere except the toilet..

In Islam, we do believe in GHosts but we call them jinn. They can move stuff and upset you but they also fear Allah/ God. I appreciate you're probably non Muslim but trust me. Its very real.
Jinns are not people from old days like old soldiers or Henry the 8th but they are spirits and they have their own ways/life/good/bad but we never interact with them, and we believe they are there too just like we belive in God and his angels and heaven.
If you see movement again, shout Allahu akbar and it will stop.i promise you. They will run.
It's happened to people in Muslim countries and Muslim households and even to myself.
They also smell like smoke.
Sorry this has happened but this is the way forward.
Play YouTube of reciting the quran round the house. It is so beautiful and feels like a weight lifted off your shoulders.
Best wishes.

Would love to be haunted by Henry the 8th.

I have a carbon monoxide detector, both upstairs and downstairs they are required by law in rental properties. Thank you to everyone not just thinking I’m crazy. I’m not a fantasist, mentally ill, poisoned with carbon monoxide and I do not a have a brain tumour as one poster suggested 🫤 I mean I know people can be closed minded but some of the replies are extreme. As I keep stating a few things you can easily rationalise but I’ve only been here two months and it’s an awful lot of happen in such a short period. I actually read through my post and it doesn’t sound as bad reading it back as when it’s actually happening to you late at night. If anything else happens I will have to try something, sage as suggested or a priest as to feel unnerved in your home isn’t a nice feeling.

“How old is your baby? I ask because post-parting mental health is a more likely explanation than haunting, so maybe speak to your health visitor?”

Since when did MN become such a crappy place? I have luckily never suffered with postpartum mental health but I have friends who have quite badly so comments like this are simply disgusting. I truly hope in real life you would never say this to a friend or family member and you just save your vileness for strangers on the internet. Would welcome a ghost in my house rather than someone like you tbh.

Edited

There’s nothing wrong with asking about post-partum MH. It’s a perfectly reasonable question. I would have said mine was fine after I had DS, but at one point I thought the shadows on the floor were talking threateningly to me. It’s far more likely than some spirits are knocking over Lego and throwing your phone about.

Elderflower2016 · 18/01/2025 20:25

No matter what the explanation is it must be horrible being scared in your own house. Friends of mine have asked the local vicar to come over and deal with this kind of thing. Regardless of whether it’s placebo or not it seems to make things better.

Imbusytodaysorry · 18/01/2025 20:33

@rockpops i believe you op.
Because I believe that we never know untill we truly know .
I had loads happen in my mums house as a kid . She didn’t believe me . When I moved out her and my step dad noticed things for themselves .
Never happened to me in any other house. .
I do remember when we lived into that house the smell of death on one bedroom. .

If I was you I’d get the priest in and move out asap .

In the mean time ask your dp to please have your back as you are genuinely terrified.

@rockpops I have definitely experienced strange happenings, like sitting with husband in parent's weekend cottage, and at a specific time of night there was a fusillade of knocking on the door.

I looked at husband and said ''Who could it be at this time of night?..went to door, and opened it to thick silence, apart from the gurgle of water in the lane.

Assumed it was grandparents from a village not too far away.

When we saw them, and asked, they said ''We would never call that late- and if we did, we would ring the bell'' {The knockings were male knuckles}

like ''hurry up and let me in!''

When the cottage was sold the new buyer experienced the knockings at a specific time of night, too, and contacted the estate agent.

The 'Ghost' was not malevolent, and the neighbours at that time were elderly and wouldn't have pulled a prank like that over so many years.

There was nowhere for anyone to hide, and I have wondered about wether current occupiers hear it.

There is a Bothy in Scottish Highlands that is supposedly haunted, White Lagan Bothy, and a hippie bloke was filming and heard some knockings and sounds of people walking about {audible on his video}

It 'could' be faked, but others have noticed the same thing while staying there,

The noises start at around 7 minutes in.

Fear of the supernatural is real and common so it’s not kind to tell the OP she’s got MH issues or being ridiculous etc.

If it gives you comfort find a priest to visit. I’ve also heard of burning sage, and when you feel a presence saying loudly something like “please leave us alone” (Google it). Also Google the address to see if there has been an incident there or ask the landlord/previous tenant.

My DF and his DW bought a house many years ago and it was old and lovely but omg it made my skin crawl when I visited. I always felt frightened, even to just go to the toilet and couldn’t leave quick enough. I never said anything but then his DW after a couple of years mentioned a few things made her uncomfortable and I realised I wasn’t the only one. They moved house after about 3 years and the primary reason was the house gave them the creeps for various reasons (DF is a total skeptic but even he was like wtf).

Back in the 80’s when I was a child I visited DF’s friends with him and they lived in a downstairs flat in London. The flat above, which shared a hallway with them, had had a woman drown in the bath and she wasn’t discovered until the water flooded her flat and started to escape under her front door and come down the communal hallway. Apparently there was often a sound of water running and repeated plumber investigations could find no source. The friends said no one would rent the flat for long before leaving because of the atmosphere in it, and the water sounds being clearly heard inside the flat but there was no water turned on unnerved tenants. When we visited it had been empty a long time as the landlord had given up trying to rent it out apparently.

Probably the poor woman who drowned in the bath was killed by the ''Ascot'' gas water heater.

These were extremely dangerous, and in a lot of very old rented properties in London {and probably elsewhere}.

They needed to have a source of fresh air to combust properly, and landlords would fit a vent in the windows that let draughts in, and the tenants would block it up.

Grandmother told us a story about a teenager who was found deceased in a chair back in the days of dangerous ''Town gas''- he had put a pan of milk on the stove to make himself a drink of cocoa or Ovaltine {this was in 1960's} and the milk had boiled over, extinguishing the flame, but the gas still came out.

The young lad just looked as if he was asleep.

So say the old fashioned gas could kill people easily- Not sure about modern gas, but carbon monoxide is deadly, other from a wood burning stove or any other combustion source.

I believe you OP our house has a presence - walking on the landing at night. Being woken by bottom of bed being shaken. Doors closing for no reason. It does not happen all the time but when it first used to happen I was scared to say the least. It’s nothing bad - but does like to wake you up at night. We have got used to it by now. Sometime’s I smudge the house with sage which helps make the house feel calmer.

One night {possibly 2006?} I was lying in bed {19th century victorian bed frame} and it began to vibrate as if a large lorry was driving by- except we don't live near a busy road -

I then thought ''someone is under my bed, wobbling it with their feet'' {but son was in bed}.I leapt out, terrified, and felt the floor vibrate.

It was an actual earthquake!

Next day at Work others said they'd felt it too- it was pretty unnerving.

We don't expect earthquakes in the UK.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 18/01/2025 23:40

I believe you OP. I have never experienced the like, and I hope I never will, but it sounds horrible and so many people have experienced similar - there are more things in heaven and earth horatio is what I believe (horatio is optional).

I must say though I’ve been totally thrown by the Maria Karry references and have been down a right old rabbit hole on google. She’s known as Maria Kerry in shed loads of the world…who knew?!!

so I’ve learnt something and had a lovely woo shiver. I love this thread and all who sail in her. Hooray for you and good luck to you OP. Get smudging I reckon. Yes I’ve had a drink. Cheers! 🍷
