To believe my house is haunted?

rockpops · 18/01/2025 00:02

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

I believe you OP but then my old house was the same , and we couldn't all be mentally ill ie boyfriends, friends etc
. It was passed down to my parent from my grandparents (dads side) so things were always happening since then aswell . My late Nan (mums side) house sitted once (never again)

Do people do that?!

No, they don’t. Certainly they don’t call in Catholic priests, which for some reason Mners are always recommending, even to non-Catholic posters, presumably because of The Exorcist.

Yes, dioceses are technically required to have a priest trained as an exorcist, but that was from before the days of declining numbers and ageing parish priests covering multiple parishes. In practice, my home country, like many others, has one Catholic exorcist in total (so he’s not going to be jumping into his car to speed several hundred miles to your house because your Lego fell over), and the Catholic church’s presumption is always that the person reporting is anxious, unhappy, mentally unwell or at risk in a relationship, not that Satan has demonically possessed their remote control.

I know the former exorcist for here for years (had been our curate when I was a teenager and my parents stayed in touch after he moved on) and he’s now in his 80s. Said that he’d only ever conducted four exorcisms in his life. That’s over about 60 years.

You'd be better off calling your parish priest if you’re nervous in your house, but all they will do is say a prayer, which you can just as easily say yourself, if you’re a believer. And if you’re not, it’s not clear why you’d want a priest.

MoonWoman69 · 18/01/2025 11:14

You always get the a**eholes that like to jump on a thread they have absolutely no interest in, just to ridicule someone. It's quite sad really that people have nothing better to do. Can't see the point myself, but it must make them feel better. There aren't many very open minded people on MN these days. The majority are the shallow, sarcastic and only their view is right ones. It's a shame.

Anyway OP, I believe what you're saying. If I listed all the things that have happened to me from being a small child, we'd be here all day! And when I've sat and tried to rationalise all those things, I can't!
There is more to this life than we know, it's ok to be sceptical, but when there's no rational explanation, then you're left with the spookies! 💐

RunningFromThePastHell · 18/01/2025 11:20

Obviously you need to check things like carbon monoxide. For your own safety.

Secondly, although there may be some odd things, plenty may be coincidence and your imagination playing tricks and hyping everything up.

This is particularly important when you consider the current thinking around poltergeist activity - the woo brigade apparently think it's not ghostly activity, but somehow caused by energy (?) from a person in the house. Hence the association with stressful/emotional times of life, association particularly with teenagers and especially teenage girls. So if there is anything in this, you don't want to be hyping it all up as it would just continue.

According to this line of thinking, even if there is some kind of spirit, the excessive poltergeist stuff isn't directly caused by them.

In terms of anything lurking, as PP have said, kindly but firmly ask them not to scare you.

I'm not even sure I believe in ghosts, but this is my advice in case!

rainbowstardrops · 18/01/2025 11:22

I used to believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. I grew out of it. Same thing here.

Not the same thing at all!

2pence · 18/01/2025 11:22

Bizarre how those who believe in ghosts get mocked while those who believe in an afterlife through religion must be respected at all times.

Carbon Monoxide alarm is a good idea at any rate. Sage incense sticks are sold more widely than smudge sticks so could be a cheaper alternative.

We're all meat puppets operated by electric neuron activity at the end of the day. Who's to say where that energy goes when our bodies reach their expiration date.

It's a hard thing to do at 3am but even if there is something in your house that can tip boxes and switch the TV on, you yourself hold far more power. You are alive, conscious and in your physical body.

The unknown is scary but we're never going to know everything about life and the universe, we don’t have that capacity.

I get so pissed when I read 'woo' posts and people say ghosts aren't real. Are you mental etc etc. You don't know any more than the next person! Just because you haven't experienced the same things, you simply have no way of knowing for sure.
Even scientists have only scratched the surface of what is possible and what isn't.
Fine if you don't want to believe but it's so incredibly bloody rude to suggest someone should go and get some mental health tests done, or the, 'Of course they don't exist', or 'Get a grip'. You literally have no definite idea.
Oh and I'm on the fence just to be clear. I certainly wouldn't call someone mental just because I don't understand what they may or may not be experiencing.

Yes, but scientists wouldn't say we have no explanation for this thing so we're going to put it down to something that we have absolutely no proof for! And you also have no proof that they don't have a mental illness, although I was not and am not suggesting that, at least we know mental illness actually exists which does make it a far more likely explanation.

caramac04 · 18/01/2025 11:59

@2pence i like what you’ve said. I have asked several scientist friends/tutors the following;
If we’re basically energy and energy never disappears but only alters; how can we say that when we die our energy hasn’t altered to a spirit/ghost/ form that can affect the environment around us?
They cannot give an answer. Yes there is no universally accepted proof of ghosts but also no universally accepted proof of non-existence.
I‘m on the fence, I have had experience of woo in an old house but if I unpicked it there might be a logical explanation. Except my dh, total non-believer, admitted when we moved within a year (I was pretty scared living there) that he too experienced the scary stuff but knew if he voiced this that my suitcase would have been packed and I’d have gone back to DM’s house.

👏👏👏👏👏 This! Some of these replies are so rude

TheaBrandt · 18/01/2025 12:12

Caramac Dh is the same. Very dismissive and totally unbelieving. When we drove away from the house with the banging I said “ok then what on earth was it?”. We both were kept awake by it and searched the house for the source of it. His reply was “Christ knows no explanation except ghosts didn’t want to say at the time so as not to freak you out”.

You should get better-informed scientist friends.

When we die, we know exactly what happens to our energy.

When we’re alive, our body produces energy via biochemical reactions. When we die, these processes stop. Energy is no longer produced, but dissipates as heat into the surroundings. This is how you can estimate time of death based on body temperature. If we cremate that body, it becomes transformed into light, heat, ash, smoke. If that body rots, decomposition releases that energy into other other organisms that feed on it.

You're talking about ‘consciousness’ or ‘soul’. We have no evidence whatsoever to suggest that consciousness, which arises from our biological being, survives the death of that biological being.

caramac04 · 18/01/2025 12:49

But we have no evidence that ‘the soul’ doesn’t survive @Hanto so nobody can say either way with certainty

There’s no evidence whatsoever that souls exist, though. ‘Soul’ is a religious concept, like ‘sin’.

caramac04 · 18/01/2025 13:03

Stating the soul is a religious concept is not proof it doesn’t exist.

caramac04 · 18/01/2025 13:03

Stating the soul is a religious concept is not proof it doesn’t exist.

Religion doesn’t deal in evidence or fact. It deals purely in belief and hope.

rockpops · 18/01/2025 14:07

I have a carbon monoxide detector, both upstairs and downstairs they are required by law in rental properties. Thank you to everyone not just thinking I’m crazy. I’m not a fantasist, mentally ill, poisoned with carbon monoxide and I do not a have a brain tumour as one poster suggested 🫤 I mean I know people can be closed minded but some of the replies are extreme. As I keep stating a few things you can easily rationalise but I’ve only been here two months and it’s an awful lot of happen in such a short period. I actually read through my post and it doesn’t sound as bad reading it back as when it’s actually happening to you late at night. If anything else happens I will have to try something, sage as suggested or a priest as to feel unnerved in your home isn’t a nice feeling.

“How old is your baby? I ask because post-parting mental health is a more likely explanation than haunting, so maybe speak to your health visitor?”

Since when did MN become such a crappy place? I have luckily never suffered with postpartum mental health but I have friends who have quite badly so comments like this are simply disgusting. I truly hope in real life you would never say this to a friend or family member and you just save your vileness for strangers on the internet. Would welcome a ghost in my house rather than someone like you tbh.

OP I was wondering, are you in touch with the previous tenant at all? Could you ask if they've had the same experiences? Fwiw I believe you, I don't understand these "believe nothing" types.

Tbf, we've got no evidence that the Easter bunny doesn't exist. Things that aren't real don't leave evidence.

ShirkingFromHome95 · 18/01/2025 14:39

But I've always wondered about ghosts. Like, do you get ghosts of ants? Or a ghost slug? Or is only evolved monkeys like us that turn into ghosts?

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 18/01/2025 14:41

SquawkerTexasRanger · 18/01/2025 00:29

Maria Kerry

This killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Beeinalily · 18/01/2025 14:50

@ShirkingFromHome95 I don't claim to be an expert, but I've spent (far too much) time thinking about this sort of thing. I think most souls either go on to the next stage or are reincarnated, but some pass very suddenly and are confused or have something to resolve. Ants and slugs are simpler and don't stay around. Probably. Although some of the slugs around here have an ethereal look to them.

Angelchick1971 · 18/01/2025 14:54

I work with a guy who kept getting slapped around the face when there was no one there. I told him that whoever it was was trying to show their presence,he should go home that night and say out loud that he acknowledges they are there ,he wishes them no ill and he hopes they can coexist peacefully. He looked at me as if I was mad but did it anyway and hasn't been slapped since!

We have had unexplained banging and crashing in a holiday house. The owners mother lived there for years and told us it was haunted. We heard the banging before she told us that.

I don’t believe in such things but honestly there was no explanation. Sounded like someone putting away a shop in a mood. No it wasn’t pipes..

It wasn’t in Wales was it..?

People can believe people any old shit they like, some of the religions out there are insane but up to them. Some people pay bullshitters who claim they can talk to their dead relatives. If you like.

But people have the opposite right not to believe in any of it. But sure, Casper is living in the OP’s house and has nothing better to do with his time than slam doors etc 🤨
