To believe my house is haunted?

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

People saying that ghosts are not real have never experienced them. I lived in a haunted house for nearly 13 years, our whole family experienced things, even my extended family and ex boyfriends that didn't live there. Lots of people refused to come into our house for this reason. It still affects me now.

We have had unexplained banging and crashing in a holiday house. The owners mother lived there for years and told us it was haunted. We heard the banging before she told us that.

I don’t believe in such things but honestly there was no explanation. Sounded like someone putting away a shop in a mood. No it wasn’t pipes..

PP 'sounded like someone putting away a shop in a mood' is a great description. I can imagine exactly. Not what I'd want in a holiday home though!

lillypopdaisyduke · 18/01/2025 07:19

Sorry but there is no way a deceased person with no muscles, cartilage and bones can move an inanimate object - it's just not physically possible.
Have you got an infestation OP ?

Judgejudysno1fan · 18/01/2025 07:30

I have an immediate solution to your problem.
And I'm very serious.
There are spirits and I understand.

Play the quran very loudly throughout the house. You can go on YouTube and find any surahs/chapters being recited.

Look up how to get rid of jinn with holy quran.

Shout Allahu akbar. Play the quran in every room.
Everywhere except the toilet..

In Islam, we do believe in GHosts but we call them jinn. They can move stuff and upset you but they also fear Allah/ God. I appreciate you're probably non Muslim but trust me. Its very real.
Jinns are not people from old days like old soldiers or Henry the 8th but they are spirits and they have their own ways/life/good/bad but we never interact with them, and we believe they are there too just like we belive in God and his angels and heaven.
If you see movement again, shout Allahu akbar and it will stop.i promise you. They will run.
It's happened to people in Muslim countries and Muslim households and even to myself.
They also smell like smoke.
Sorry this has happened but this is the way forward.
Play YouTube of reciting the quran round the house. It is so beautiful and feels like a weight lifted off your shoulders.
Best wishes.

Hi @rockpops

We moved into our home many years ago. We are staunch sceptics, and believe me, we are more concerned with the living than the possible activities of the dead.

However...the morning after we moved into our new home. All the cupboard doors in the kitchen were wide open, and the tap was on full force in the bathroom. We accused each other of the wrongdoing and was mad at each other for a minute. Until we realise it wasn't us.

There was always a strong smell of tobacco (we are non-smokers). The backroom was always very uninviting and constantly dark, no matter how bright we make it with the lights. Random toys in the children's room would come on at night (no batteries), and footsteps would be heard moving around in the dining room (we have wood flooring, so a very distinctive sound). Our bedroom, though calming, at times made us feel uncomfortable. And sometimes, when we were in the dining room, it would seem as if there was smoke in the air, just a faint wisp.

Decided to dig a little deeper about our home (built in 1890). Found out that the family that lived in the home before, had lived there all their lives...and both the husband and wife died in the house. The husband was a smoker, and the wife was known as a great cook. Husband died in the back room of our home. The wife in our current bedroom.

We still live in the house, spent a lot on repairs and restructuring, but it's still a beautiful home. And yes, there are still things that happen, but we know what it could be and are okay with it. We were told at the time to get a priest when our son told us to, 'tell the people in the room to stop talking' (he was very young and he was playing on his own in his room) as it could be dangerous. It hasn't been. But we do get a surprise event every now and then.

Nevertheless, my story differs from yours in that the activity that you are experiencing is directed at you. This is something a little different.

Maybe to set your mind at rest, you could find out a little more about the property or the grounds first. But as this is a temporary situation, and you don't intend to stay, you may need to consider if this is something you can live with for the interim.

Superhansrantowindsor · 18/01/2025 07:50

Why? Why would any ghost or being do these things? If they wanted to alert you to their presence and have the ability to turn things on and tip objects etc why don’t they pick up a pen and write? If they can giggle etc then why don’t they talk to you?
Please don’t worry. It takes ages to get used to the noises and quirks of a new house. Whilst I believe in an after life I do not believe in ghosts or that dead people can contact us. If you establish it firmly in your mind that it is all rubbish you will start to see rational explanations for everything.

TaggieO · 18/01/2025 07:53

How old is your baby? I ask because post-parting mental health is a more likely explanation than haunting, so maybe speak to your health visitor?

I completely get this and unless you have been through it it’s really hard to comprehend.

when were were growing up my mums friend had some poltergeist activity in her house that we witnessed and it has affected me my whole life, still dream about it now. Can’t explain it either (I was 10 at the time)
it’s just a thing that I really try to block out and forget about 😞

Probablyshouldntsay · 18/01/2025 07:59

I am a believer so you won’t get a snarky comment from me, but 20 years ago we lived in a ‘haunted’ house, absolutely bizarre strange things all the time, animals acting oddly, my mum behaving strangely, as soon as I was old enough I stayed out pretty much every night.

long story short- there was a massive carbon monoxide leak one day, main source was from the living room and it almost killed my brother and dogs who had fallen asleep watching television in there.
please do get your appliances checked and buy a few alarms

TheaBrandt · 18/01/2025 08:05

I don’t think our house is haunted but I had an unexplained incident a few months ago. I put an item of jewellery that is precious to me given to me by a deceased much loved relative safely in my jewellery box.

Two weeks later the item was in the middle of the dining room table. Dds both away. It was not Dh or I that moved it. Not the cleaners day.

sometimesmovingforwards · 18/01/2025 08:05

Maybe it’s just the spirit of Mariah Carey, bloody fuming at how badly you spell her name.

Cut her some slack though. Along with everyone else, she’s still a bit angry about how terrible her version of I Want to Know What Love Is was. Rumour has it she thought it was just a bit of home karaoke fun, but to her utter shame it got released as a single.

Cherry8809 · 18/01/2025 08:09

I absolutely believe in “haunted houses”.

I never used to, ever, but the house I live in now has provided me with some…interesting..experiences that I simply cannot explain. Things that other people have witnessed that scared them. My best friend won’t stay over here without leaving the lights on overnight.

And I’m not even remotely the kind of person to get spooked easily - I work in close protection, and have worked some seriously unsafe, sketchy details in South America.

I know it’s hard but try not to be freaked out - I think whatever energy it is thrives on stress and anxiety.

SevenMoon · 18/01/2025 08:11

YABU. How would a ghost slam a door or turn on a TV? They have no body! (Or vocal cords to giggle.)Much more likely a draft and you have a neighbour with the same TV/remote control.

I once had a phone that would start 'charging' when it wasn't plugged in, this was after mild water damage. Any chance you have quite high humidity in your house?

HelloNorthernStar · 18/01/2025 08:20

Has your partner experienced anything? A lot of odd things happening here, have you spoken to the neighbours? They might have some useful info from previous tenants.

Curtainqueen · 18/01/2025 08:25

Unplug the TV from the wall at night. I have a feeling it won’t turn itself on again.

Can you expand on what you experienced I'm genuinely interested.

Our neighbors had passed away, and we arranged a council swap to move into their property. We were very close to them, and they felt like grandparents to us. After moving in, we experienced several unusual events. For example, while we were on holiday, my uncle heard footsteps and felt as though something was chasing him down the stairs. I was once in a bedroom with an ex and heard scratching at the door, even though our cat had passed away weeks earlier. There were sounds of typing on a keyboard, voices when no one was there, and footsteps outside the bathroom door while I was in the bath. We often heard chatting and movement upstairs while we were sitting in the living room. Occasionally, we even smelled the scent of baking bread, which our neighbor used to make regularly. It was like our neighbours were still living their normal lives but they had passed, it's really hard to explain.

timetodecide2345 · 18/01/2025 08:34

@SevenMoon ever heard of the double slit experiment?

How do lots of things happen?

I have things like this a lot. I used to think it might be ghosts or even a stroke but now I know it's a mixture of auditory and olfactory hallucinations, which along with tinnitus is very common in autistic people like me.

Globalwalker · 18/01/2025 08:37

Fear of the supernatural is real and common so it’s not kind to tell the OP she’s got MH issues or being ridiculous etc.

If it gives you comfort find a priest to visit. I’ve also heard of burning sage, and when you feel a presence saying loudly something like “please leave us alone” (Google it). Also Google the address to see if there has been an incident there or ask the landlord/previous tenant.

My DF and his DW bought a house many years ago and it was old and lovely but omg it made my skin crawl when I visited. I always felt frightened, even to just go to the toilet and couldn’t leave quick enough. I never said anything but then his DW after a couple of years mentioned a few things made her uncomfortable and I realised I wasn’t the only one. They moved house after about 3 years and the primary reason was the house gave them the creeps for various reasons (DF is a total skeptic but even he was like wtf).

Back in the 80’s when I was a child I visited DF’s friends with him and they lived in a downstairs flat in London. The flat above, which shared a hallway with them, had had a woman drown in the bath and she wasn’t discovered until the water flooded her flat and started to escape under her front door and come down the communal hallway. Apparently there was often a sound of water running and repeated plumber investigations could find no source. The friends said no one would rent the flat for long before leaving because of the atmosphere in it, and the water sounds being clearly heard inside the flat but there was no water turned on unnerved tenants. When we visited it had been empty a long time as the landlord had given up trying to rent it out apparently.

Pinkissmart · 18/01/2025 08:42

OP - I believe you.
I do think these things can sometimes be explained by some of the things outlined above ( carbon monoxide/ poor electrics etc) so please get them checked .

Left · 18/01/2025 08:44

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm? If not buy one today.

Is it just you noticing things? If so book a doctors appointment.

Barney16 · 18/01/2025 08:44

Dodgy electrics in an older rental that may not have been maintained properly. The more you focus on peculiar things the more peculiar things you will see and hear and things you wouldn't have noticed or brushed off become more significant.
