To believe my house is haunted?

Moved to a new house 2 months ago. Felt lovely and inviting upon viewing and certainly didn’t feel any bad energy.

About a week after moving in things started happening! At 6pm every evening I would hear things, first the dishes being moved around in the sink, then a cupboard poor upstairs being slammed shut, loud bang in bedroom I heard from monitor that make her wake jump and woke her up, then one evening I was on the phone to my mum talking about what’s been happening I said to her “as long as it doesn’t scare me I don’t mind” and right in front of me my daughters baby monitor turned itself on and started beeping loudly like the battery was low but it wasn’t. The monitor wasn’t plugged in or charging and the camera upstairs was turned off! When I looked at the time it was 6.02pm! My blood literally went cold was so scared.

Then my son had left this robot fish toy on my bedside table, it only starts moving in water. I was talking to DP from the bedroom he was in another room and this fish starts flapping. I shouted “oh my god”, it stopped then did one last flap before fully stopping. Again this toy has never just turned itself on and there was no water on the table. Shortly after this I was standing at my sons bedroom door and I could see smoke in his room, I panicked and ran in as was sure there was a fire but then it was gone.

Christmas Eve I was wrapping some last minute presents upstairs and I had my daughters monitor on with white noise in the background so couldn’t hear properly but thought I could hear talking. First I thought it was just the neighbours then I turned the monitor down and realised the TV was on that had been turned off and was playing Maria Kerry all I want for Christmas is you. I was the only one awake and when I tell you I was petrified to go downstairs that is an understatement! So I went down to turn it off with my hairs standing up all over my body and said out loud “Merry Christmas, but you need to leave me alone” then right after I said it one of the presents piled under the tree fell for where it was placed. I froze in absolute terror. We then had family staying for a while so thing went quiet.

After they left one night I hear a noise and had no idea what is what went downstairs there was no noise so checked all the rooms and the shower has turned itself on (slow flowing but still on) but wasn’t turned on at the nob. I stood there staring at it for a while trying to figure it out and turning the non off and on but it wasn’t stopping. I walked out the bathroom to get DP and it stopped. Another time I was in my sons bed with him trying to get him to take an afternoon nap and his box of Lego tipped over on the floor and went all over the floor. It was on top of another box but has never done that and he’s had those boxes for years!

Last night was my scariest experience yet!!! I got up to pee in the night at around 1am went I got back into bed I could hear a a faint giggle and muffled talking very low from the corner of my bedroom next to the window I thought maybe it’s just the neighbours but then the muffled talking moved next to the bedroom door and then I hear a loud bang that made me jump out of my skin right next to my head. When mustered up the courage to look what it was my phone has “fallen” off my bedside table onto the floor and must have hit my daughter’s next to me cot. I was scared stiff in bed then my dog starting barking down stairs and once he starts he goes on and on until someone sees to him so I had to go down even though I was too scared to. I went down tried to settled him in his bed then noticed the TV was on again!! I’ve had this TV for about 10 years it has never ever turned itself on! Apart from these two occasions in this house but never in my old house. Wtf is going on. There is no way all of these are just little coincidences, I tried to explain it away at first but feel like that’s not even possible anymore. What do I do? Do I get a priest in?

Oh there was another occasion where I was trying to fall asleep and heard in the corner of the room a pop like when someone puts their finger cheek and out again to make a pop sound. It was as clear as day I even got up to try and recreate the sound with stuff in the room but I have nothing that could make that sound. My DP doesn’t believe in this type of stuff and it seems like it’s just doing it to me as my son has never said he’s seen or heard anything. I also keep having nightmares.

Any advice? Has anyone dealt with similar?

Get Ghost Theory round to investigate. You can also download Spirit Talker app on your phone so you can have a conversation with the spirits! Love a bit of Maria Kerry! Maybe its the spirits fave too 👻

Amaranthasweetandfair · 18/01/2025 08:58

@Judgejudysno1fan what if the ghost hides in the toilet?

I have things like this a lot. I used to think it might be ghosts or even a stroke but now I know it's a mixture of auditory and olfactory hallucinations, which along with tinnitus is very common in autistic people like me.

It wasn't just me that experienced it, it was our whole family, uncles, aunties and even friends.

lillypopdaisyduke · 18/01/2025 09:05

Sorry but Ghost Theory are fake - they've been caught faking - there's a great YouTuber called 'Beardo gets scared' and he debunks ghost hunters and how they create bumps knocks and noises - and how rempods are useless - for all believers check him out - he really makes sense.

The Irish singer.

I keep to the quote ‘more things in heaven and earth’ on these matters. We just don’t know as much as we think about the world we take for granted. The experiences you report do align with experiences reported by others - listen to ‘Uncanny’ on Radio 4 for some context. It would be sensible to try and rule out a few factors such as the electrical supply in the house and whether neighbours have noticed any remote control appliances malfunctioning. Are you near any high voltage power lines and/or rivers or canals? The combination of the two can lead to strange experiences for people, possibly due to an electromagnetic charge being generated. Other than that, as pp have said, a minister of faith or spiritualist medium might be able to help. Statements said out loud as you have done e.g ‘time to leave now,’ can help how you feel emotionally.

Goldengirl123 · 18/01/2025 09:16

I lived in a haunted house. My husband was a total non believer but even he got freaked out (although he denies it now😂). They won’t do you any harm. It’s really quite interesting isn’t it though? Have a chat with them and tell them that they are scaring you

AppleBlossomMay · 18/01/2025 09:19

I now believe that houses can be haunted. I didn't, in the past, but strange experiences have led me to believe otherwise.

@rockpops I'd start off by saying you'd like to be left alone. If that doesn't work, contact a priest or spiritualist organisation to bless/cleanse the house.

Sounds very unnerving. I would get a priest in.

I hope Maria Kerry was a typo

or a giveaway

ChopstickNovice · 18/01/2025 09:32

Please get a carbon monoxide alarm.

New houses have unfamiliar noises too.

Ghosts do not exist. That said, if it makes you feel better, why not get a local priest in anyway? May calm your mind.

GutsyShark · 18/01/2025 09:36

You know it’s not haunted. Grow up.

You know it’s not haunted. Grow up.

Totally uncalled for.

HarryBlackberry1 · 18/01/2025 09:37

Totally uncalled for.

A dose of reality. If the OP wants to know what’s happening CCTV cameras are very affordable now. And others have suggested carbon monoxide. There are no such things as ghosts. Let’s be real.

StrawberryD · 18/01/2025 09:44

I believe you. I'm moving house next week and now I'm thinking what if it's haunted 😂 it's an old house too.

OldTinHat · 18/01/2025 09:50

Definitely 'smudge' your house, in other words burn sage. You can buy smudge sticks from new age/hippy type shops.

Start from your front door and work around each room and your house clockwise. Open doors and windows. State it's your home and you respectfully ask that anyone else please moves on.

The stuff absolutely stinks!

Sunhatweather · 18/01/2025 09:54

If you don’t believe in ghosts, that’s fine - your opinion. That will be until experiences that can’t be explained happen to you. In my case, even stone cold logical scientist DH developed a strategy of simply ignoring and not talking about it because ‘no such thing or proof of ghosts’, despite witnessing unexplainable events. The head in sand approach doesn’t help. It’s extremely unsettling when you’re stuck in a house where things are happening.

OP, I believe you. While you’re now (understandably) possibly noticing more because paranoia has set in, if getting a priest in will help you feel settled, do it. Remember that while it scares you, it can’t hurt you. Some people do recommend talking to whatever ‘ghosts’ are and asking them firmly but kindly to leave.
Admittedly, iI moved house!

Ifeelabnormal · 18/01/2025 10:08

Burn white sage then tell it to go to the light. Say the Lords prayer - that often works quickly.

People saying mental illness, see a doctor etc have never experienced this. I agree most so called hauntings have worldly explanations but not all.

TheGreatPotato · 18/01/2025 10:14

you have my deepest sympathies. I’ve lived in a haunted house before, it was awful. I would get a priest to come and bless the house. I’ve lived in a few places since and nothing like that ever happened again, I KNOW that house was haunted, it was horrific.

the tv turning on could be dodgy electrics or a leak near some wires though so maybe get an electrician to come and check them?

caramac04 · 18/01/2025 10:28

I have every sympathy OP but some of the responses have got me laughing out loud. Be a bit different at 3am - then I’d be downstairs with the light on and a big German shepherd at my feet.
My logical side thinks there must be an explanation for all these but then my woo side thinks it could be a ghost.
I would definitely sage the house, ask a priest to visit etc.
Another vote for carbon monoxide alarm, they’re not expensive but I thought landlords were supposed to supply them.
Whatever the reason for these experiences, try and carve out some time for you to do something you enjoy and which relaxes you.

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 18/01/2025 10:44

PebbleDashAtOne · 18/01/2025 00:59

Please check that your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

This. Obviously, ghosts are not real.

However, perception of supernatural activity could be caused by mental illness or a physical cause like carbon monoxide poisoning or a brain tumour.

That's potentially fatal so you really should get yourself checked medically.

rainbowstardrops · 18/01/2025 10:56

I get so pissed when I read 'woo' posts and people say ghosts aren't real. Are you mental etc etc. You don't know any more than the next person! Just because you haven't experienced the same things, you simply have no way of knowing for sure.
Even scientists have only scratched the surface of what is possible and what isn't.
Fine if you don't want to believe but it's so incredibly bloody rude to suggest someone should go and get some mental health tests done, or the, 'Of course they don't exist', or 'Get a grip'. You literally have no definite idea.
Oh and I'm on the fence just to be clear. I certainly wouldn't call someone mental just because I don't understand what they may or may not be experiencing.

Either a Mariah Carey tribute singer or a good typo😁

OP, I don't know what to make of it all but I'd be unnerved too. However, as others have given explanations as to why these things could be happening I prefer to believe those rather than think of ghosts (otherwise I'd have trouble sleeping!) 😬

I used to believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. I grew out of it. Same thing here.

It is only mumsnet where things are easily dismissed and disparsged. Ghosts homeopathy past lives life after death. More cynics on here than anywhere!
