And German politics and just focus on the President he’s already paid for and turning X into a toxic wasteland.

So did the woman who did the last inquiry. She said stop doing inquiries and start taking action instead.

Who is Musk after? He's after Starmer. As ever.

He isn't wrong though.

Jumpingthruhoops · 03/01/2025 18:20

CandlesClementines · 03/01/2025 17:50

No he's talking about it because jess p has said no inquiry.

And it's quite some U-turn from JP who, when the Tories were in power, said there should absolutely be one.
Funny that...

CandlesClementines · 03/01/2025 18:20

@noblegiraffe thanks.
I'm actually wondering if em shouldn't do the enquiry himself because it's wheels within wheels isn't it 😱

There has already been an inquiry

https://www.iicsa.org.uk

Why are you pushing for a second one?

I'm not. The families of the victims are.

They are pushing for the recommendations to be implemented rather than a new inquiry

Appleandoranges · 03/01/2025 18:23

Yes Elon Musk is just trying to undermine Starmer. I don't think he's ever taken any interest in the plight of vulnerable or exploited girls or women before. Absolutely shameful of him to use the plight of these girls for his political ends. The men in Rotherham have been convicted and there was a public inquiry ten years ago.

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2025 18:26

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 18:19

He isn't wrong though.

He’s posting disinformation, calling Jess Phillips a rape genocide apologist and retweeting Tommy fucking Robinson’s film. He is quite a lot wrong.

Abhannmor · 03/01/2025 18:34

Feelingathomenow · 03/01/2025 17:24

I think there’s an issue across political spectrums in social media and the media generally. We need to step away from the right is wrong and the left is warm and fuzzy correct. Tying oneself to any (political). Ideology, unquestionably is dangerous. Social media wins through engagement. What better way than to manipulate people into sides who will react predictably. The more people are engaged the more advertising revenue they will make, the algorithms are specifically set to make you engage and get angry. The two tribes will emerge and off they go, getting angry and stressed and earning the shareholders cash.

We need to really start pushing back on the shit we are spoon fed, look at the state of “entertainment” look at the music being pushed, the programmes we are told are a “must watch”. Look at the reaction to anyone who shows any intellect.

People just don’t think critically anymore. I’m an admin/moderator on a number of Facebook groups- some have several thousand members so you can’t know every one on there. Yet you can see patterns emerging. Over the last few weeks across a number of groups new members or inactive ones started posting derogatory comments about a certain group whose members were potentially members of that Facebook group. Similar posts also hit wider social media.. Although careful not to be specific it was clear to those who saw the pattern across a number of platforms this was a coordinated attack with antisemitic undertones. Yet if you just saw one example of these posts you would think it was an innocent discussion. Largely the protagonists of this had links to the left and the Catholic Church.

You have Zuckerberg on the left Musk on the right. Neither hold great views. Zuckerberg allows misogyny to reign supreme and shuts done anyone who doesn’t agree with his questionable views. At least Musk doesn’t do this. It’s no different to the catholic v Protestant churches in the 16th century.

How we combat this is through educating ourselves, learn to listen to those with different views to your one. Learn to formulate decent debating skills based on knowledge (actual knowledge not shitty soundbites). Think critically, if you can’t agrue both sides of an argument- you don’t understand it well enough, you don’t have to believe in the alternative argument you just need to see that it’s a possibility for someone to logically believe. People need to stop buying into prepackaged morality and values and not be afraid to reject arguments that “their tribe” makes.

We need less politicised and more rounded education. We need to carefully think about what our kids are being taught.

We need to stop throwing around words like racism, sexism, transphobic etc to stop important debates. - chances are the people who start doing this, care little about the victims of the injustices these words actually represent.

Every single one of us is manipulated by social media/media we need to start educating ourselves and become wiser to how and when this is being done.

Comrade Zuckerberg on the left. Oh please 😂 😂 😂. He thinks ' governments are not the way forward '.
What is the way forward then , Mark? I can't seem to find it in Das Kapital.

Mmm I rest my case.

Tittat50 · 03/01/2025 18:40

@nonbinaryfinery thankyou that's a useful overview. I use WhatsApp and engage only in health groups on FB but pulled myself away from as much as I can for some years. Every news story on my phone is the most boring nonsensical crap informed by a recent Google search and now even my Amazon purchases. I receive nothing of educational value unless I actively pursue it! That's why I love MN tbh. I find this to be my main source of awareness and challenges to my own thinking.

I can see how we are becoming more insular as individuals as we no longer share collective news in the same way.

I trust no news source any longer, anything I read on the internet without suspicion and this situation I feel the same.

Having worked in Local Government I understand politicians are equally self serving. I believe they did an horrendous job on this situation and race was a part of that.

Yet, reading this thread I think why now Musk? What about the terrifying anti abortion agenda in the USA. Is EM tweeting about that? I'm anti censorship and would like to think EM the same. Yet, he has banned others opposing certain things? So I feel he has an agenda. Yet I am invested in this subject as I'm still horrified by it.

Can I just opt out of life please because I see no easy answers to this mess. 😭

Tittat50 · 03/01/2025 18:44

@Feelingathomenow yes, I feel you have articulated this perfectly. I am afraid to even discuss this with people I know for not being dogmatically tied to one position. I just want to absorb what I can and ponder everything and debate and back and forth on this. It's important.

Great post 👍

Paul2023 · 03/01/2025 18:48

Does anyone else think that Labour could be severely damaged by Trump and Musk?

I wonder if Starmer is genuinely worried?

The USA could make life hard for Britain if they turn on us …?

let be honest Britain needs the US, they don’t need us.

I really think Labour are in trouble

Why should he be a thorn in anyone's side

He can fuck off and mind his own business.

How are we going to make him 'fuck off'?
I agree as an American it's none of his business, but while we tolerate poor leadership who is going to make him FO?

Comedy thread! Brilliant. I’m assuming you don’t actually believe that Elon musk aims to or does hold power to account. He serves his own interests only.

Musk bought Twitter to hold truth to power and that's exactly what he's doing. He's a hero for this. The victims are being heard finally.

I think Trump and Musk are going to fall out and fight bitterly before too long. They’ll be too busy tearing lumps out of each other to interfere in other nations’ politics.

Birdscratch · 03/01/2025 15:09

He called Jess Phillips a ‘rape genocide apologist’

She has worked tirelessly for the welfare of women. She worked for Women’s Aid before becoming an MP. She has fought for women who have been victims of domestic violence for years. She is the MP who reads out the names of the women murdered by men every year in the H of C. She fought the last election campaign while facing serious harassment on the ground from Galloway’s pro-Palestinian party and was booed and heckled by thugs during her reelection speech.

Elon Musk is a very rich man who lives in the US.

Who the fuck do you think cares more and has done more for women and girls the U.K.

Jess Phillips is good at middle class feminism (and I applaud the work she has done on violence against women).

Where's she been on the grooming gangs though? Too scared of her own seat in a Muslim area. It's the biggest scandal of our times and now she had the chance to try and put it right and wants to push it off on some small town council who probably haven't got any money or power (and is also a town with a high Muslim population).

There has already been a national inquiry

https://www.iicsa.org.uk

It includes testimony from victims

https://www.iicsa.org.uk/survivors-voices.html

They have been heard.

Musk is just using this as a political tool. He's using the victims to push his agenda.

Echobelly · 03/01/2025 19:05

Hilarious how Musk bangs on that the UK government is a 'dictatorship'... while demanding that it does what he says.

Gee Elon, that sounds a bit like.... dictating?

The worst thing almost is that you just know that The World's Richest Man, with no connection to the UK, who pays the minimum tax here the he possibly can, will be sided with by many of the exact same people who voted for Brexit because of 'sovreignty' and 'not having other countries make our rules' (which they never did)

JHound · 03/01/2025 19:52

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 18:19

Should we keep doing inquiry after inquiry or just start actually acting on the recommendations of said inquiry.

We had a democratic election. Apartheid Man may not like that but to try to overturn that to put in his preferred party is not an option.

I think idiots with the vote are a bigger risk to the UK and Musk can buy their influence to influence our democracy.

I don’t think Trump really cares that much about who is in office in the UK nor does he care about seeing Reform in power.

I'm not. The families of the victims are.

Are the families of the victims pushing for a second one or the recommendations of the first to be actioned? Do they realise every subsequent repeated inquiry delays how long it takes for action to be taken.
