Furious with DD's swimwear

FFSTeenagers · 23/07/2024 17:53

Someone talk me down please!

On holiday with elderly parents and elderly in-laws - wonderful people. 15 yr old DD has emerged from her room to go to the pool in 5he smallest of bikinis. I can almost see her vagina.

I feel fucking ancient saying this. I hate myself for even feeling like this but she has zero modesty.

I bought her 3 bikinis (together - we went together) from Roxy and Next - lovely ones. Not one has arrived and instead she has bought, without my knowledge, 4 from shein that are not for her curvy build. Barely any material and I'm really embarrassed.

Confronting her has gone downhill rapidly and she's claiming that I'm hardly a feminist as 'she should be able to wear what she likes as it's her body'. She's not bloody wrong but what the hell happened to my daughter's modesty.

My parents and in-laws are sensing the atmosphere already and we only arrived an hour ago.

I'd be cross too. It's not appropriate to be wearing so little that your grandparents feel embarassed to look in your direction. Silly girl. You dress for the occasion, and if you are with your elderly grandparents you have a bit of consideration for the fact.

It would spoil my elderly in laws holiday to have a teenage grandaughter swanning about in practically nothing. And it's their holiday too.

I don't imagine you can do anything unfortunately - although I do love the suggestion that you should wear one of them too. I imagine she'd find that embarassing.

Silly girl? Wtf are you to ge saying that… you don’t even know her!

If it's at all helpful...

Teenagers are peer oriented and image conscious.

So her internal image of what she looks like is dependent on her internal/social media audience.

This is really tough for you. Is there any way you can frame this for yourself by seeking help/support/sympathy from the older generation? You never know what they might come up with from their experience.

Life2Short4Nonsense · 23/07/2024 19:07

I feel conflicted about this. On the one hand there is a long history of society telling women what they can and cannot wear. This is still going on. Nor do I believe women and girls are responsible for what predators or misogynists do. In an ideal world your daughter should be able to wear what she wants without consequences.

However, we don't live in an ideal world ofcourse. I would argue that with nearly everyone carrying an camera phone in their pockets, it's worse than it was 20 years ago. Your daughter might end up with some photo's of herself online that will mortify her in years to come. She is only fifteen and does not yet understand the full context of certain clothing.

Her comment about feminism also signals her immaturity and lack of understandig of the world she lives in. @FFSTeenagers you ought to show her some lectures from Gail Dines if she really wants to get an understanding of what feminism is. Your daughter has grown up in a pornified culture and she's not even aware of it. She has been spoon-fed a diet of sexual images before she even started to develop her own sexually. I wasn't even aware of how sexualized the images of pop-stars were when I was that age. To me the way Britney Spears dressed was perfectly normal and acceptable and I wore skimpy stuff without thinking about it. However, nobody had a smartphone back then, so I face no consequnces today.

There are many things she does not yet know or understand and this is where an adult needs to step in to provide boundaries and context and to protect her from consequences she should not have to face, just because she is still a foolish teenager.

I ❤️ this.

"But OP lost me too at "see her vagina" - what, did granny bring a speculum?"

"I spat my tea out at that!"

Really?? you really laughed? I just eye-rolled and thought 'not THIS again," but perhaps it's the first time you've seen the smug troops crowding in to correct the vagina/vulva thing, they love to do it, it makes them feel wonderfully superior.

Geiyotue · 23/07/2024 19:09

YANBU OP. The bikinis posted are so tiny they are pornographic and totally unsuitable for a 15yo.

I would confiscate them and buy her new bikinis from a local shop that actually cover her boobs and pubic area, and take the money from her allowance for both those and the ones you bought which she left at home.

She's pushing boundaries and you need to hold firm.

Tosstyhat · 23/07/2024 19:09

Idk why you don't just go on SHEIN and find a pic of the bikini so people can clearly see what the issue is.

Dibbydoos · 23/07/2024 19:09

I feel your pain @FFSTeenagers My 23yo big busted DD wouldnt wear a bra under a tiny top when we wrre in the USA shopping with a guy we'd met on a cruise - he offered to take us shopping as we had a spare day in florida.

I said she should have worn a bra and I got the same line as you did.

I left my DD to it, I was mortified at times, but what can you do?

I am a feminist but I am also practical and putting it out there could make you a target so best to play safe imo.

This. On every level. 👏

I absolutely love this idea.

Decompressing2 · 23/07/2024 19:10

You have my sympathy - it’s such a tricky age when it comes to stuff like this. It’s likely she wants to get a tan and it’s apparently trending at the moment to have the tan lines across your chest that those triangle bikinis give you (the ones which tie behind your neck).

Just say to her - can you reach a compromise with every day swimming and tanning - and ask her if she would be ok if her grandad wore a g string so his meat and two veg were obvious so he could avoid tan lines and see what she says. And then prob for fun I would buy a g string did grandad and ask if he’s up for a laugh.

Borninabarn32 · 23/07/2024 19:10

Rebelling with clothes is pretty standard teen behaviour. It's not even really rebellion, she's just finding her style. It's a common bikini style, loads of women, especially younger women and teenagers are wearing them.

I do think a 15 year old going bikini shopping with her mum and choosing them "together" is going to be a bit cringe for her.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2024 19:11

FloatyBoaty · 23/07/2024 18:45

Ummm… why won’t her grandad sit by the pool because his granddaughter wants to wear a bikini? V puzzling.

First let’s be honest. No bikini is really modest is it? They all end up wedged up your arse when you get up from your sunlounger or out of the water, or swim in the sea and your bikini top ends up strangling you half to death whilst doing absolutely nothing to cover your boobs …

And whilst I’m sure this bikini IS probably not what you’d want your fifteen year old to wear, fifteen year olds always want to push it with clothes. You did it. I did it. Kate fricking Middleton- the QUEEN of modest dressing- did it. Tbh I think that surrounded by her parents and grandparents is probably the safest environment she CAN experiment with fashion. And I can guarantee, a bikini is not a bloody gateway drug to dressing like Bianca Censori and going out wearing a sofa cushion and a fur hat. She’s just trying things out. Working it out. Finding her way. And maybe she’ll look back at those holiday snaps in 30 years and go “fucking hell what was I thinking” and maybe she’ll go “wow I’m so glad I was so confident in my body when I was so young. That was a great holiday”.

Either way- don’t you want her to remember this break for the lovely time with you and your family? Not a row about some silly swimwear?

Agree.

Favouritefruits · 23/07/2024 19:11

You are only young once! If I could get away with it I’d be wearing cheap skimpy swimwear instead if high waisted tummy control monstrosities! Leave her be

Investinmyself · 23/07/2024 19:12

The one I put pic on was described as a micro bikini. I wouldn’t be happy for a 15 year old in that. Not appropriate for a child to be showing breasts or bum cheeks or outlines of genitals. Once she’s an adult she can choose.

TeenLifeMum · 23/07/2024 19:12

Dh has had a shock. Our dd has gone from last year’s swim tops, full swim suits with swim shorts (aged 15) to a string bikini this summer (age 16).

I’m delighted she’s finally accepted her willowy body that she used to hide in shame. Any pervy men would be confronted because it’s their behaviour I’ll challenge, not hers! That said, every teen is wearing the same and no one is perving that I’ve seen. In the 1990s women used to sun bathe topless and no one batted an eyelid on holiday.

hepsitemiz · 23/07/2024 19:12

HappierTimesAhead · 23/07/2024 18:13

😂 Good point!

Think that comment may have been tongue in cheek. Like the quip from the film The Heat where Julia Roberts sarcastically says "Oh good, now everyone can see my cervix".

OP, are we talking Bianca Censori levels of "modesty"? Can you link an image of the models she has chosen?

cardibach · 23/07/2024 19:12

RobertSalamander · 23/07/2024 18:57

We all know that there are different styles of bikinis available on the market 🙄 you’re really telling me they’re all fine for all occasions?

No bikini is fine for all occasions. Just occasions lounging by the pool/on the beach.

gardenmusic · 23/07/2024 19:12

She should be able to wear skimpy bikinis, but in reality she will make some people feel uncomfortable, depending on where you are she could upset local sensibilities, and she will get attention that she will probably not want, and at 15 could be dangerous.
She will be leered at, there's feminism and there is being stupidly provocative.
It's not an ideal world. What you should be able to do and what is sensible are very different things.
If you are in a holiday hotspot, buy one more bikini that you can both agree on, and she can pay for it when you get home.

WetBandits · 23/07/2024 19:13

Uppity7 · 23/07/2024 18:15

I would also find this really grim. But I think you just have to suck it up. She's not wrong about the feminist angle. At this point, she's made the decision, and I'm sure her grandparents know it wasn't YOUR decision. Just let her get on with it.

Also... she's been secretive about this. She is HOPING to get a rise out of you.

I think all you can realistically do is try to make sure you're accompanying her if she's wearing the bikinis around predatory males.

I would also be tempted to take lots of holiday snaps including her in her dental floss bikinis in awkward positions. Really lean into it. Everything's fine, lovely holiday snaps! Then I would put together an album of large prints including the most unflattering shots of her, and leave it lying around. But then I have a bitchy side.

How fucking nasty! Why on earth would you go out of your way to damage a 15 year old’s self esteem like that?

jeaux90 · 23/07/2024 19:13

Tell her she's playing into the patriarchy's hands. That will confuse her but also might make her think about what feminism is actually about

It's about being correct and knowing the correct names for the female anatomy. Nowt to be superior about.

It depends how skimpy? Can you link op. Lots on shein are normal bikinis.
But from description it may be more like this? Mine is slightly older but I’d not be ok with her on a family holiday in this style of bikini.

Op has now said it’s like this.

SwirledIntoPoems · 23/07/2024 19:15

FFSTeenagers · 23/07/2024 19:00

I hate to say it, but that is very accurate to the one she emerged in.

So. For all you out there saying it's Me with the problem, would you be ok with your 15 year old wearing this?

That's the worst one posted, the back of it would be shocking on anyone - I really don't know how women's swimwear got to the point of exposing the whole bum entirely. And everyone round the pool/at the beach has a phone and can take pictures, if there are some pervy blokes there they will. Women shouldn't have to dress with predatory men in mind, but she is a kid. A skimpy bikini is one thing, but that particular one - from the back - is really not OK!

jeaux90 · 23/07/2024 19:16

I tell you what feminism isn't op, buying shit from China with some of the worst Human rights violations against women and girls.

Maybe tell her that.

My DD is the same age. Absolutely fucking not. (And the fashion ATM is to buy a size smaller in most clothes, so imagine it’s even smaller.)

Investinmyself · 23/07/2024 19:17

Pic not showing it’s a micro bikini - Op has confirmed like this. I’d not let a 15 yr old wear it.
