Furious with DD's swimwear

FFSTeenagers · 23/07/2024 17:53

Someone talk me down please!

On holiday with elderly parents and elderly in-laws - wonderful people. 15 yr old DD has emerged from her room to go to the pool in 5he smallest of bikinis. I can almost see her vagina.

I feel fucking ancient saying this. I hate myself for even feeling like this but she has zero modesty.

I bought her 3 bikinis (together - we went together) from Roxy and Next - lovely ones. Not one has arrived and instead she has bought, without my knowledge, 4 from shein that are not for her curvy build. Barely any material and I'm really embarrassed.

Confronting her has gone downhill rapidly and she's claiming that I'm hardly a feminist as 'she should be able to wear what she likes as it's her body'. She's not bloody wrong but what the hell happened to my daughter's modesty.

My parents and in-laws are sensing the atmosphere already and we only arrived an hour ago.

OP, call her bluff - nick one of her illicit purchases and pop it on before swanning down to the pool.

Amazing. PLEASE do this!!

minipie · 23/07/2024 20:20

FFSTeenagers · 23/07/2024 19:00

I hate to say it, but that is very accurate to the one she emerged in.

So. For all you out there saying it's Me with the problem, would you be ok with your 15 year old wearing this?

Not a blooming chance would I be ok with this.

These teeny weeny triangle and string bikinis that are designed to look 8 sizes too small are not appropriate for a 15 year old on a family holiday with grandparents.

Are there shops near you OP?

She is 15. She is confident in her body. You have already said too much. Leave her.

No, don't. This is a mother parenting her daughter, who is still struggling to understand what is and is not appropriate

poodlepompoms · 23/07/2024 20:21

You need to have a calm chat with her about appropriateness and keep it factual rather than honing in on ‘I can see your vag’

What she is wearing is suitable for her first girl’s holiday (in 2-3 years!) in Ibiza where they are taking posey pics and dressing up for the beach clubs.

Not for a family holiday.

It’s a good lesson to learn, and it needs to be learned. Express yourself and experiment, but some situations require you to rein it in a bit.

I’ll wear a thong bikini on a kids free holiday with my husband somewhere tropical, but the more modest two piece comes out when we’re with my in laws.

This is literally basic social skills.

the same people @-ing you for being a prude/bodyshamer/out of touch over exaggerator would also be angry if you wouldn’t let her wear a SHEIN bodycon special to nana’s funeral

katepilar · 23/07/2024 20:21

ebadame · 23/07/2024 18:18

If you notice anyone perving on her say LOUDLY SHE'S 15

In some countries 15yo can have sex if that what you are pointing at.

That's hardly relevant.

You're an adult.

Irrelevant to the point that women only dress in certain things for the male gaze

Uppity7 · 23/07/2024 18:15

I would also find this really grim. But I think you just have to suck it up. She's not wrong about the feminist angle. At this point, she's made the decision, and I'm sure her grandparents know it wasn't YOUR decision. Just let her get on with it.

Also... she's been secretive about this. She is HOPING to get a rise out of you.

I think all you can realistically do is try to make sure you're accompanying her if she's wearing the bikinis around predatory males.

I would also be tempted to take lots of holiday snaps including her in her dental floss bikinis in awkward positions. Really lean into it. Everything's fine, lovely holiday snaps! Then I would put together an album of large prints including the most unflattering shots of her, and leave it lying around. But then I have a bitchy side.

What an absolutely vile post. This isn’t having a bitchy side, this is being abusive. What a sure fire way to make sure your daughter develops an ED, goes NC at the first possible chance she gets and needs therapy to get over her relationship with her narcissist Mother.

Is it this sort of number? Btw I put it as ‘sensitive content’ but it’s just a model in a Shein bikini from their website.

No that one is much more coverage.
Op has confirmed it’s a micro bikini on their website like this.

mollyfolk · 23/07/2024 20:23

Ouch! I hope you didn’t say she was too curvy for it. I would not be happy but also might suck it up at this stage due to holiday and not getting into a power struggle. Shein bikins are so cheap - it would be shame if it started to come apart at the seams!

RampantIvy · 23/07/2024 20:23

How do we know she's wearing it for the gaze of men and not because she wants to avoid awkward tan lines or because she feels good in it?

She is 15. Who is going to see her tan lines?

No. We're making the point about hypersexualised clothing on teenage girls and how prevalent it is.

Don't care

DoraSpenlow · 23/07/2024 20:24

God, I hate the look of those fanny in a hammock bikinis. Hopefully the fashion will change soon.

Seriously though - I recently went to Rocky Horror wearing suspenders for the first time under... well not much. I felt fucking amazing. Striding around in heels, suspenders, short skirt and low cut top.

Nothing to do with what men thought of me. It made ME feel good. The positive comments (which were mostly other women and gay men) just helped but came AFTER I'd already decided I felt GOOD

In my opinion, men look rather silly in suspenders.

Not all men do. As you'd know at Rocky Horror

But I'm not a man so it's irrelevant in my case

Teateaandmoretea · 23/07/2024 20:24

OP she’s 15 and a child. My 15 year old definitely has limits on swimwear. When she’s 18 she can crack on with the feminist line.

CarmelaBrunella · 23/07/2024 20:24

@Investinmyself I think the model's pose says it all.

ebadame · 23/07/2024 20:24

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 23/07/2024 20:19

I meant to embarrass DD with OP and granny leaving it all hang out.

Edited

But it isn't embarrassing to her or she wouldn't be wearing it

This is another Shein bikini… I mean I wouldn’t want my 15 yr old daughter in one simply because there will be pervy men getting their rocks off looking. As a mother that is beyond grim. If it was nothing but women around I wouldn’t care.

No. I was talking about the hypersexualised clothing of teenagers. I can't work out what nothing the girl means.

ebadame · 23/07/2024 20:26

Is this a stealth ad for shein??

Investinmyself · 23/07/2024 20:26

I feel ancient sometimes. What’s wrong with saying you’re a child no. When she’s 18 on hols paid for by herself with her friends then she can wear what she likes.

minipie · 23/07/2024 20:27

Can’t believe there are people seriously arguing that these bikinis are not designed to be sexual.

Yeah all these micro bikinis are just to avoid tan lines 🙄🙄🙄
