Anyone watching the public disorder in Leeds? Bloody disgusting behaviour. Animals. AIBU to wish police had so many more resources to bring consequences to these absolute excuses for humanity?

What has caused it?

Poppasocks · 18/07/2024 21:56

No idea what it's all about but it's all over Tiktok

NowIam35 · 18/07/2024 21:58

Apparently a child was injured and social services took them away to safety. That's only what I've read on social media though.

Social services went to a house where young kids had been left alone and a baby had fallen out of a window and been injured. Police had to come and help as family kicking off. Children removed to a safer location due to tension. Then the riots began. But they are setting fire to double decker buses, next to people’s houses… setting fire to e-bikes, wheelie bins, police cars..it’s just infuriating to watch

Sounds feral.

DustyLee123 · 18/07/2024 22:00

I hope all SW’s and emergency workers are ok.

NowIam35 · 18/07/2024 22:00

But yes it's appalling that people think it's acceptable to act like that. There's even women and kids damaging police cars. And lots of people stood around watching and filming?! Anyone involved should be arrested, fined and charged. But I doubt that will happen and most will get no punishment as usual.

TorturedPoetDepartment · 18/07/2024 22:02

Watching the burning bus right now, hope the driver is OK! It's like the Purge and I don't see how this is 'supporting the family' at all, which is what the Tiktokers are claiming

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 18/07/2024 22:02

Police car flipped on to its side as unrest breaks out in Leeds (msn.com)

Not terribly clear yet what's going on

There Often seems to be people waiting for any excuse to smash shit up and riot.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/07/2024 22:04

Poverty, dissatisfaction, drugs, no hope.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/07/2024 22:06

My DD lives in Harehills. Her boyfriend took this picture. I think it is very isolated. As a retired SW I can confirm it can be terrifying removing a child from a violent and unpredictable family.

It's really bad, it's not the greatest area of Leeds it's happening in. The story I've seen also on social media is Social Services have intervened and taken some kids and the community has turned on them. I forsee it going on for hours.

Supporting the family??! They’re beneath contempt.

Oh absolutely, the cheers at the blowing up bus really made that clear! Hope the kids are far, far away

Yep, and left-behind children.

There's a whole section of teenagers who were supposed to go to secondary school in 2020/21, but schools and holiday clubs closed down. Some of them were on social services radar but dropped off as no home visits. A fair chunk of them never made it back to full time school attendance in any meaningful sense, some of that chunk are now runners and involved in other gang activities. At the other end of the age scale, kids who were 14/15 at the time schools/social services shut down, never went back, and are now 18/19 yo young men and women (but mostly men), unsocialised, half their education missing, and violent.

Runbunny · 18/07/2024 22:13

The city is rioting because children were removed from a neglectful family?

You must be so worried for her.

I just hope this doesn’t spread.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/07/2024 22:16

@BiscuityBoyle It's not really near the street where she lives. She has just walked back from her book club and saw no trouble at all.

Namechangencncnc · 18/07/2024 22:17

Harehills is a really problematic area. Intense poverty, drug issues rife, serious social problems.

Obeseandashamed · 18/07/2024 22:17

I've had to drive via that area when working at the hospital nearby. It is awful!!! The whole strip is based in different sections of ethnicities each in quite clear gangs. It's not somewhere you want to have to drive through in the early hours of the morning. It's also never ever quiet. Even at 3am there are people sat on the streets and huddled together in crowds.

Chickenuggetsticks · 18/07/2024 22:19

I really hope people are identified and charged. It’s not acceptable.

There is very clear footage online of a bloke stood holding a lighter to the seat on the bus. Also a man with a lighter on the engine.

People who do stupid shit like this, what do they want? What is their end game?

Not a whole city. The good people of, eg Roundhay, would never riot. They have no cause to. But there are little pockets in every city that are pretty lawless now. A school near us issued guidance to staff about how they had to deal with a couple of 14 yos who have been charged with knifing a local dealer - they have to keep them on the school roll as they've not been found guilty and there's nowhere else for them to go. But these kids are dangerous.

People in poor areas are under a lot of strain. Think about how stressful day to day life in the UK is now - everything is expensive, nothing works. Now think how that looks if you've got no money.

Cantgetausername87 · 18/07/2024 22:28

Where is everyone seeing these reports? Sky news and BBC are only reporting on the damaged police car. I hope nobody is hurt
