To think Judy Murray is that mum!

So Judy Murray is astonished Emma Raducanu backed out of playing a farewell mixed doubles game with her son because she didn’t feel well that morning and wanted to prioritise her qualifying singles match the next day.

If it had been the other way round I’d be surprised if Andy didn’t do the same and Judy would have backed his decision. AIBU to think women are always called upon to sacrifice their own interests for those of men and Judy Murray is that mum!

Didn't Radacanu give the Murrays a different reason though?

I thought it interesting that on the day she pulled out, Martina Navratilova suggested it rarely works as a strategy. I think she meant that there is no value in conserving energy for singles.

Mainoo72 · 09/07/2024 10:08

If I was Andy, I’d be embarrassed that my mum was wading in on issues like this & creating more drama. She needs to let her adult son deal with these things himself.

dottydodah · 09/07/2024 10:13

I think you are right! Judy is the original Tiger Mum I think ,Fair dos to her for getting Andy and his bro "on".However it was as though she was "astonished" that anyone would pass up the chance to play with her precious son even it they are not able to!

Outnumbered99 · 09/07/2024 10:15

Wouldn't we all have felt the same as Judy in her position? And yes she probably could have been more tactful but she was hurting for her boy! In the long term she might think oops but I think we can allow the whole family a little bit of emotional latitude this week!

Let’s be honest though, Andy Murray is taking the Elton John approach to never ending retirement…

Seashor · 09/07/2024 10:17

Isn’t she just, ‘that mum’, can’t abide her.

I agree, I find it embarrassing that it’s always his mum commenting for him.

CyanideShake · 09/07/2024 10:22

She's obviously entitled to whatever opinion she likes but publicly voicing it is surely embarrassing for her son. He's a big boy, Judy love, he doesn't need you leaping to his defence.

Totally this!

Grrrpredictivetex · 09/07/2024 10:30

I read her comment was about the scheduling not that Emma R had pulled out.
I think of all people she realises the stresses of professional tennis. Obviously she's disappointed Andy's career at Wimbledon has ended the way it did.

Sarah2891 · 09/07/2024 10:34

Yeah she seems insufferable.

It is embarrassing. Why did she get involved?

He's taking forever to retire, it seems.

ssd · 09/07/2024 10:38

I'm sure she regrets it. I think she's great. I seen her drawing white lines in an old run down council tennis court near me years ago, so she could teach kids tennis. Shes always encouraged kids whose parents cant afford a private club to play tennis.

Dont get the hate here.

Agree she shouldn't have bothered saying anything, tho she was probably asked for her response. Otherwise, I'm a big fan of hers, she great on Twitter, very funny and a huge supporter of girls in tennis. She gives lots of coaching ideas too.

EarthlyNightshade · 09/07/2024 10:40

I like Judy, I've seen her talk live and she certainly was that mum when they were younger as she had to take them long distances to compete and manage this mainly on her own.
I'm inclined to think that if you agree to do something you should do it. Emma agreed to play tennis with him, then left him without a partner and no option to find someone else. Different if she had pulled out of the singles as well.
Emma lost anyway so hard to say if that worked out for her.

Anyone who hasn't seen the video of Judy and the other Murray brother should watch it. Judy is excellent at laughing at herself.

LizzieSiddal · 09/07/2024 10:41

I like her and she’s helped to bring up two good men.

I know, it's nonsense.

Cherandcheralike · 09/07/2024 10:45

Didn't she say she was being sarcastic about it and absolutely understood? Pretty sure she said something ratty about bad scheduling forcing the decision.

It wasn't about conserving energy but about protecting her wrist.

Yes she did say she was being sarcastic. People will miss that bit out though. 🤔

MrHarleyQuin · 09/07/2024 10:52

Of course she's that mum. No reason to dislike her for it though.

Mrsjayy · 09/07/2024 10:55

Oh she's definitely that mum but she is really competitive but fair she is entitled to her comment she's a tennis coach in her own right not just Andy's mum and thought giving a "wrist a rest" was not good sportsmanship, even if she was being sarky about it.

Liv999 · 09/07/2024 10:56

She's definitely that mum, of course Emma was going to prioritise her singles match

I thought it interesting that on the day she pulled out, Martina Navratilova suggested it rarely works as a strategy. I think she meant that there is no value in conserving energy for singles.

I thought Martina's take on it was very interesting and wished she'd been pressed by Clare Balding to expand on why dropping out of the doubles never worked as a strategy to improve your chances in the singles. Martina seemed a bit disparaging of Raducanu (you could see her giving a bit of an eye-roll when the subject came up) and it was as if Balding wanted to shut down any talk that wasn't positive and cheerleading. I think there was an implication that Raducanu and other modern players need to toughen up a bit. Quite a few of the ex-playing commentators and pundits have made pointed remarks about playing doubles improving your singles game.

CranfordScones · 09/07/2024 11:04

People seem to regard her as a pushy stage school mum. You do realise she was a very good tennis player who represented her country as a student, and who coached other successful players? She also sacrificed a lot for both her sons.

I can't think of a man with a better attitude to women than Andy Murray - and it's clear where it comes from - so it's inexplicable why so many women seem to hate her.
