To think Judy Murray is that mum!

So Judy Murray is astonished Emma Raducanu backed out of playing a farewell mixed doubles game with her son because she didn’t feel well that morning and wanted to prioritise her qualifying singles match the next day.

If it had been the other way round I’d be surprised if Andy didn’t do the same and Judy would have backed his decision. AIBU to think women are always called upon to sacrifice their own interests for those of men and Judy Murray is that mum!

I think Judy Murry is great!

I thought Judy was being sarcastic when she said 'astonished', in that she wasn't at all surprised that ER pulled out of the doubles match because she's a bit flakey, prone to injury, unreliable.

That is worse isn't it?

Bloody rude. Emma is just at the start of her career, Andy is at the end. Judy should have been far more gracious and supported Emma in my view.

Roseyjane · 09/07/2024 11:46

She says now she was being sarcastic. I don’t believe her, I think she was pissed off and climbed back.

emma would have discussed with Andy before making it public and Andy would have done the exact same thing. And Judy would have recommended Andy do the same thing. And she knows it.

she is an attention seeker though. Likes the limelight. Trying to be a celeb.

Difficult one.

I think after so many years at the top it would have been nice for him to appear one last time, give a little interview, thanks to the crowd etc.

Imagine working at a place for 20 years and then not being able to give a retirement speech. It's kind of similar.

I think I can understand why he may feel a bit frustrated to be able to have that time. Maybe not entirely justified, but at least understandable.

Errr....he did all of that the day before.

fizzandchips · 09/07/2024 11:47

Judy Murray’s autobiography, ‘Knowing the Score’ is an insightful read. I liked her before I read it, but I’m in awe of her now.

itsnotabouthepasta · 09/07/2024 11:51

Plus Andy Murray STILL hasn’t retired as he has the olympics still to come…

DollyBelle · 09/07/2024 11:54

I am a huge Andy fan but actually think he should have ended with that match with his brother and the beautiful presentation.
As I understand it his mum was having a go at the organisers not at Emma.
But she must have known the comment could have been misconstrued.
Emma had every right to put her own career first.
It would be great to see Andy at the Olympics with his brother that would be the perfect farewell.
Roger looks a bit lost, doesn’t he? I adore him, but he looks like he’s hanging on to who he was at Wimbledon. I know he loves it there, as do his family, but maybe a bit of time away might help? I’m not sure.
It must be hard being that successful and driven and then you are sitting in the stands….

Busby88 · 09/07/2024 11:57

I think she was being sarcastic.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2024 12:03

He’s a big boy now, he shouldn’t need his mummy concerning herself publicly in his professional affairs.

It is embarrassing at his age, I am sure he can speak for himself.

TheKeatingFive · 09/07/2024 12:05

What exactly did she say?

BigBoysDontCry · 09/07/2024 12:06

She's a twat. I used to pass her regularly crossing the road when I was driving DC to school and was always tempted to run her over (not really).

She was part of the park of Keir development and a pal of Nicola Sturgeons. Both Andy and Jamie seem like decent guys though so they must have got that from somewhere.

mydogisthebest · 09/07/2024 12:06

I really like Judy. She has a very good sense of humour and seems a lovely person.

It was meant to be Andy's last match so him and his mum would have been disappointed. I know I was.

Didn't do Emma much good dropping out did it? She still lost her singles match.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2024 12:09

TheKeatingFive · 09/07/2024 12:05

What exactly did she say?

If you mean Judy Murray, she said she was ‘astonished’ (aka IMO absolutely bloody furious) that Emma R pulled out of the doubles match with Andy.

Not being able to give a retirement speech?? After the men’s doubles they got Sue Barker out of retirement to interview Andy, had a film of his career highlights, assembled the great and the good of tennis on Centre Court and gave him a huge and apparently endless standing ovation. It was as big a send-off as I have ever seen! I am sure they weren’t going to do it all again, whether Andy & Emma had played together or not.

Anyway he says he is going to the Olympics, so if that’s right he isn’t yet retired.

Sarah2891 · 09/07/2024 12:10

I don't believe she was being sarcastic. But even if she was she's been around on social media long enough to know how people would take that comment...

Whydidmykitkatbreak · 09/07/2024 12:14

Andy was silly to set it up in the first place. He should have stuck to playing the doubles with his brother, enjoyed the speeches etc with Sue Barker and then called it a day. It was obvious from the start there was a risk she’d pull out, and in any case he’d had his farewell, it didn’t need an encore.

I also think he’s taking the absolute proverbial by talking of going to the Olympics, taking the place of someone who might be fit enough to win something or at least gain experience to be more competitive, so he can turn a serious sporting occasion into his personal farewell tour. I normally think he’s sensible, respectful and a good sport, but this endlessly drawn out retirement is not a good look. He’s had his time.

Judy was being sarcastic, but would probably have been better to say nothing.

ruffler45 · 09/07/2024 12:16

Judy Murray, the Nicola Sturgeon of tennis, with only one subject on her agenda, publicity and support of her son.. Embarrasing for her son who has not really won much at the end of the day (3 grand slams?) but got a knighthood for it.

TeenLifeMum · 09/07/2024 12:22

She explained it was a comment on the ridiculous scheduling that pushed Emma to make that decision, not a criticism of Emma. Some people love the drama don’t they.

CroftonWillow · 09/07/2024 12:22

It follows a string of decisions from Emma demonstrating a selfish attitude which will obviosuly irritate people. She's entitled to the decisions she makes but I'm sure she doesn't expect people will always like them.

Butchyrestingface · 09/07/2024 12:26

I 💕 her.

She's a successful woman who:

  1. has raised two multi-slam winning sons
  2. is GC
  3. the Daily Mail hates her

So she's obviously doing something right. Grin
She says she was being sarcastic with the Radacanu comment so I will give her the benefit of the doubt.

To be precise, he was knighted off the back of the second of his two Olympic gold medals rather than his Grand Slam successes (though I'm sure winning Wimbledon twice didn't hurt).

itsnotabouthepasta · 09/07/2024 12:31

I’m not convinced that Emma is mentally strong enough. I hope she has a good sports psychologist on her team. When she went down in her game on Sunday she was immediately holding her ankle then telling the physio it was her back - and that was the day after complaining about her wrist.

I suspect having so many injuries in such a little time has freaked her out and she’s struggling to differentiate between an injury and a knock. Understandable but if she doesn’t overcome it she’ll struggle to move forward in her career

TellMeWhoTheVillainsAre · 09/07/2024 12:37

Most successful people in the world have "that mum" or "that dad". It's why these people are successful. You don't reach the top of your chosen field by being half-arsed about anything. You have to be competitive. You have to be determined. You have to be committed.

In a population of 9 billion, very few people in the world are ranked amongst the best at anything. It's us that didn't have "that mum" that are not pop superstars, or multi-millionaire sports stars etc.

I'd love my children to be hugely successful in their chosen hobbies/interests... But I'm just not that arsed. So we'll make do with the local parish hall rather than Wembley 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
