To think Judy Murray is that mum!

Mycatsmudge · 09/07/2024 10:03

So Judy Murray is astonished Emma Raducanu backed out of playing a farewell mixed doubles game with her son because she didn’t feel well that morning and wanted to prioritise her qualifying singles match the next day.

If it had been the other way round I’d be surprised if Andy didn’t do the same and Judy would have backed his decision. AIBU to think women are always called upon to sacrifice their own interests for those of men and Judy Murray is that mum!

Tell me you know nothing about tennis without telling me you know nothing about tennis.

Cringe!

Where has this nonsensical "tell me you know nothing about xxx ..." come from?

No Judy knows what a woman is and does a huge amount for grass roots tennis. The only thing that Judy and Nicola have in common are their accent and their sex chromosomes.

Shows how much you know then. I have seen them hanging out with each other together often at events in Scotland. If that doesnt denote friends what does?

Although having said that apparently they have more in common than Chromosomes, but that's the streets talking.

LlynTegid · 09/07/2024 15:58

I can see where Andy Murray gets his sense of humour from. Remember the anyone but England one a few years ago?

I'm sure she regrets it. I think she's great. I seen her drawing white lines in an old run down council tennis court near me years ago, so she could teach kids tennis. Shes always encouraged kids whose parents cant afford a private club to play tennis.

Dont get the hate here.

Agree. The vitriol on here is breathtaking. People hate her for what?
She's fine so much for youth tennis in Scotland and widening access for those who wouldn't have had access before. She's truly passionate about youth tennis.
Strong woman. Her sons love her. Wish more were like her.

Back from work now and catching up on all the comments. My thoughts are Andy Murray would not be where he is without his mum’s ambition for him but he is now in his late thirties with a successful career behind him and she needs to let go and let him be.

Her comment did come across as criticising Emma for dropping out of the mixed doubles and even if Judy felt annoyed she should have kept quiet as it makes Andy look like he needs his mum to speak for him. Not a good look!

Judy Murray is AS WELL KNOWN as Andy Murray is. She was asked an opinion, and gave it. It may have been tongue in cheek. It may have been sarcastic. It may have been said in all seriousness. But the fact is SHE WAS ASKED so she answered.

Is she supposed to say "I'm sorry, as a woman and a mother, I am not allowed voice any opinion".

Yes he's a grown man.
But she's a grown woman.

Is it only mothers you have a problem with @Mycatsmudge? or if it was a father/male coach/male colleague/competitor etc commenting would you ask are they "that dad/coach/colleague/competitor".

I think everyone knows 'Andy's mum's is her own woman and is entitled to say what she likes, whether Andy agrees or not.

She's not just Andy's mum, she's Judy Murray, a very successful tennis coach - a woman of experience in the tennis world, with opinions.

Whether her comments are welcome, correct or appropriate is for her to deal with.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 09/07/2024 20:47

I think she's great actually, and was giving her view of poor scheduling. I don't really understand why some people are so desperate to paint her in a bad light so twist her words totally out of context.

And she's clearly done a fantastic job raising Andy and Jamie. Andy Murray has a superb attitude towards women, which will undoubtedly be due to his mother.

I'm sure he'll be fine

I can be forgiving of that mum when you raise two such successful tennis players (and of course Duncan).
It's when that mum is trying to railroad her very average 7 year old into a leading role in the school play despite zero talent that I find it hard to take.
#totallyteamjudy

I'm glad you mentioned Duncan! He's left behind so often....

😂

She's a strong, successful, outspoken WOMAN, of course people don't like her.

She strikes me as someone who couldn't care less if people like her or not. Andy and Judy rub people up the wrong way, it's their manner, I think she's great.

Yeah she seems insufferable.

I wonder what she's like as a MIL, bloody scary I would expect...

Folkwhore · 09/07/2024 21:42

What a mean thread.
She clarified her comments re Emma.
She's done a great job as a single mum with her sons who are strong advocates for women and does a lot for youth tennis in Scotland.
I really like her.

Lewis Hamilton had to win 7 F1 world championships (and god knows how many races) to get his Knighthood, What Andy did to get his knighthood pales into insignificance compared to Lewis.

Insignificant in comparison?

Andy Murray is the first tennis player in the world to win successive singles gold medals in the Olympics. He was knighted for his services to tennis and his charity work.

Lewis Hamilton got his knighthood for services to motorsport only.

Folkwhore · 09/07/2024 21:52

Also she used the word 'astonished' because the tweet she was replying to said that ER's decision was 'astonishing'. She was being sarcastic and calling out the original tweeter.

Outnumbered99 · 09/07/2024 10:15

Wouldn't we all have felt the same as Judy in her position? And yes she probably could have been more tactful but she was hurting for her boy! In the long term she might think oops but I think we can allow the whole family a little bit of emotional latitude this week!

Seriously!!?? He's an adult, not a child, or even a teen. She can privately think what she likes, but to go public just makes her look silly, and yes, like "that Mum". I would have been beyond embarassed if my Mum had behaved like that, at any age.

Blades2 · 10/07/2024 18:20

Considering her son has probably the loudest voice for female tennis players getting what the men players do, I’d say she’s done a great job bringing those boys up and definitely not “that mum”

ilovegranny · 10/07/2024 18:51

Super Mum who raised two super men. I admire her enormously.

AgnesX · 10/07/2024 18:52

Moany Murray's mum? Well, he had to get it from somewhere.

Redgreenfroggy · 10/07/2024 18:59

She said she was being sarcastic but then she mentions that Serena Williams has said one of the best moments of her career was playing with Andy.

that was def a dig

Re: JM; i can remember back when AM was getting married ect thinking jesus - AM's wife is a brave woman. I'd guess that not much goes on in AMs life without his mother's input ....

AM himself - he's so very dour isn't he? Never seems particularly pleased about anything!

I find the big retirement hoo har a bit weird when he's going to the olympics in a couple of weeks 🤔

Dour?

Andy Murray the tennis player?

Give over

Redgreenfroggy · 10/07/2024 19:01

Anne Diamond? I have not heard of her since the 1990s

Isn’t she just, ‘that mum’, can’t abide her.

This!
