To think Judy Murray is that mum!

So Judy Murray is astonished Emma Raducanu backed out of playing a farewell mixed doubles game with her son because she didn’t feel well that morning and wanted to prioritise her qualifying singles match the next day.

If it had been the other way round I’d be surprised if Andy didn’t do the same and Judy would have backed his decision. AIBU to think women are always called upon to sacrifice their own interests for those of men and Judy Murray is that mum!

She explained it was a comment on the ridiculous scheduling that pushed Emma to make that decision, not a criticism of Emma. Some people love the drama don’t they.

Yes, but that’s unfair of her. The scheduling was the way it was because of rain, incomplete previous matches involving other players (I think one of their opponents was in men’s doubles as well and had to complete that match first) and lots of factors that don’t revolve solely around Andy. It’s disrespectful to other players to suggest they arrange the tournament schedule around it being Andy’s “last Wimbledon”.

Let’s be honest though, Andy Murray is taking the Elton John approach to never ending retirement…

See, this is incorrect. It’s the media who threw the retirement thing into the ring. If you remember last year, I think it was the French open, the media and FO organisers did a whole big retirement thing and he wasn’t retiring. He has always said he’d be playing until he couldn’t and that would decide his career ending. He did say Wimbledon would likely be it but only earlier this year.

MargaretThursday · 09/07/2024 12:45

It used to be a fairly standard thing that players would pull out or more often tank their doubles if they were doing well in singles, so whereas I understand her frustration I'm sure Andy would have understood Emma's pov.

Greentapemeasure · 09/07/2024 12:49

I mean obviously Judy Murray is ‘that mum’ and she’s bloody good at it too!

Judy Murray, the Nicola Sturgeon of tennis, with only one subject on her agenda, publicity and support of her son.. Embarrasing for her son who has not really won much at the end of the day (3 grand slams?) but got a knighthood for it.

Tell me you know nothing about tennis without telling me you know nothing about tennis.

Name me another British tennis player in the open era who has done what Murray has (46 titles, 3 slams and 11 slam finals, a Davis Cup which he pretty much won single headedly even though it was a team event, a year end title, 3 Olympic medals, two of which were gold, 41 weeks at number 1 and numerous other accolades).

Yeah, he's crap that Andy.

Re: JM; i can remember back when AM was getting married ect thinking jesus - AM's wife is a brave woman. I'd guess that not much goes on in AMs life without his mother's input ....

AM himself - he's so very dour isn't he? Never seems particularly pleased about anything!

I find the big retirement hoo har a bit weird when he's going to the olympics in a couple of weeks 🤔

I know next to nothing about tennis but I think I know more than you!

Also why the comparison to Nicola Sturgeon?!

suburberphobe · 09/07/2024 12:57

I agree with you @Mainoo72

Fulloftea · 09/07/2024 13:00

Wee Nic comparison is funny!

He got his big goodbye the day before. I like Andy, he's very self deprecating.

Emma, she struggles I think.

redfacebigdisgrace · 09/07/2024 13:01

She’s really stuck up for Raducanu in the past. I love her. She takes no prisoners and is a fierce supporter of women and girls. She’s done a great job with her sons too.

redfacebigdisgrace · 09/07/2024 13:01

Lot of misogyny on here. Wtf with the Sturgeon comparison 🙄

I know, it's nonsense.

Thinking someone said something tactless and is pushy isn't " hate". Stop exaggerating

itsnotabouthepasta · 09/07/2024 13:03

AM himself - he's so very dour isn't he? Never seems particularly pleased about anything!

He's really not though! If you've ever seen him on something like A league of its own, he's got a great sense of humour and is always poking fun at things (as is Judy).

redfacebigdisgrace · 09/07/2024 13:04

AM has a very dry delivery but he’s very funny. The dour Scot trope is a bit tedious and tired now.

I'd like to think that poster you responded to was being sarcastic...otherwise, what a gobshite.

Wins the biggest tournament in his sport, twice, the first Brit to do so since Fred Perry in the 1930s, and does so in the hardest era ever, an era which includes the most gifted player to pick up a racket, Federer.

Add in a US Open and two Olympic gold medals too.

Murray has had an incredible career.

Switcher · 09/07/2024 13:06

I adore Judy Murray so...I'm biased. But yes keeping quiet is always better.

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 09/07/2024 13:06

I like her. It’s professional tennis here, not a game at your local tennis club.

ArabellaScott · 09/07/2024 13:06

LizzieSiddal · 09/07/2024 10:41

I like her and she’s helped to bring up two good men.

She's done wonderful work for grassroots sport in Scotland, too.

SoundTheSirens · 09/07/2024 12:30

To be precise, he was knighted off the back of the second of his two Olympic gold medals rather than his Grand Slam successes (though I'm sure winning Wimbledon twice didn't hurt).

Lewis Hamilton had to win 7 F1 world championships (and god knows how many races) to get his Knighthood, What Andy did to get his knighthood pales into insignificance compared to Lewis.

If Judy was the mother of Andrea and Eamon had withdrawn from the doubles, Judy would still think it unreasonable because she IS that mother but it's not about sex.

NIcola Sturgeon only had one subject on her agenda, Scotland as an independant nation, look where that got her (and her husband and her party)..

LarkspurLane · 09/07/2024 13:12

I can be forgiving of that mum when you raise two such successful tennis players (and of course Duncan).
It's when that mum is trying to railroad her very average 7 year old into a leading role in the school play despite zero talent that I find it hard to take.

Judy Murray is that mum
Richard Williams is that dad
The world is a better place for people like that

Maybe "that mum" sees potential that you don't see yet?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd let the little one be the lead. Have the video at the ready and sell it to whatever media outlet when she's the next Taylor Swift 😉🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
