To think Judy Murray is that mum!

So Judy Murray is astonished Emma Raducanu backed out of playing a farewell mixed doubles game with her son because she didn’t feel well that morning and wanted to prioritise her qualifying singles match the next day.

If it had been the other way round I’d be surprised if Andy didn’t do the same and Judy would have backed his decision. AIBU to think women are always called upon to sacrifice their own interests for those of men and Judy Murray is that mum!

I really don't think this is about Emma being female.
If it was a male player and mens doubles my reaction would have been the same.
I can see both sides but it is a shame.
She could have just shown up & played a couple of games before retiring so Andy could get his fairwell.
The day before she was very up for it.

SoundTheSirens · 09/07/2024 11:10

I love Judy Murray. She was being sarcastic, her main beef was with the scheduling.

I think it was a lovely Wimbledon farewell as it was - yes, he lost, but it was on Centre Court with his brother, Sue Barker out of retirement to interview him, then waving from the winner's balcony - and I think with hindsight Judy might agree.

Poor Duncan though, he never gets the limelight...

Topseyt123 · 09/07/2024 11:11

I do like Judy Murray.

You could argue that she should have kept quiet and that Andy is a grown man (and a very wealthy one too) who fights his own battles, which I am sure he does most of the time. It even turns out that she wasn't directly criticising Emma.

You could also argue that Emma Raducanu, in light of her injury problems and wrist surgery, should perhaps have been more cautious about accepting the invitation to play mixed doubles with Andy. Then he might have had the opportunity to choose a different partner.

In reality though, we don't fully know what went on behind the scenes. We do know that Emma saving herself for her singles match due to the wrist stiffness is now a moot point, as unfortunately she lost that match the very next day. Can't blame her for trying to do the best thing though.

Wrist stiffness can be very painful. I have had carpal tunnel syndrome on occasions in the past and I can see how that sort of thing could be a very real problem to a tennis player.

Although it doesn't look good, I suspect that in the end the whole thing was just a series of unfortunate events, and unfortunate timing.

Noseybookworm · 09/07/2024 11:12

It's so ridiculous that people think Judy Murray was criticising Emma Radacanu - it's quite clear that her comment was sarcastic! In other words she didn't feel it was unusual that Emma would prioritise her singles match and want to rest her wrist. It's all a silly storm in a teacup!

whynotwhatknot · 09/07/2024 11:15

emma got some ba abuse on twitter it was verging on harrasmment

whole thhing has been blown out of propotion

ClaribelLowLieth · 09/07/2024 11:15

HA yes poor "Duncan" he is appearing in our local panto this year I wonder if Judy will be bothered to show up to watch him😀.

Totally this!

Yes! I no longer live in the UK and thought he’d effectively retired several years ago.

ExpectoPatronums · 09/07/2024 11:19

If being in your child's corner makes you 'that mum' then I suppose she is. I like her, she's straight forward and says what she thinks. She's raised two boys who have done very well.

twilightermummy · 09/07/2024 11:25

I like Judy Murray but I do think all this affected Radacanu's game on Sunday. Yes, Emma probably shouldn't have agreed to it in the first place, but who's going to say no to that in the moment! She wasn't to know for certain that she would even get as far as she did. Andy Murray would have done exactly the same and been very unapologetic about it.
The person who has annoyed me the most in all of this, is the nasty, irrelevant Ann Diamond. I don't know who she thinks she is! I'm sure Radacanu is crying into her pillow that Diamond won't be supporting her anymore 🙄

Let’s be honest though, Andy Murray is taking the Elton John approach to never ending retirement…

😂😂

I ❤Judy Murray

I agree, especially about Ann Diamond's unnecessary and totally bitchy remarks. Did she even try to retract them?

Seashor · 09/07/2024 10:17

Isn’t she just, ‘that mum’, can’t abide her.

I agree. She irritates me beyond words. The original pushy mother. Thank god she’s not mine!

Yes this. I think it was probably very difficult for Emma to say no in that moment and under those circumstances. She's still perhaps quite young and immature and felt it was impossible to say no.

Foxxo · 09/07/2024 11:30

Thing is, Andy HAS made a similar decision before when he pulled out of a doubles pairing over an injury while carrying on his singles run.

Emma had every right to pull out to protect her wrist in the hope of not upsetting it before her singles match.

There was no need to Judy to make any comment.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/07/2024 11:31

She was blamed in the press for ending Murray career.

He had played in the singles and mens doubles... so has had his real goodbye anyway.

I don’t think I could live long enough to like them - ever!

Badbadbunny · 09/07/2024 11:34

I'll be glad to see the back of both Andy and Judy. Both are a pain in the arse and full of their own importance.

Tillievanilly · 09/07/2024 11:34

By being that mum I think she has probably helped her sons a lot considering how well they have done. There is I obviously two sides to this story and the press may have exaggerated…

Zanatdy · 09/07/2024 11:34

I bet Andy was furious. Andy would have done the same thing as Emma

Hummingbird75 · 09/07/2024 11:36

She was THAT mum long before this.

Emma made the right decision for herself and her future.

Andy is dragging this out so painfully. Leave with dignity and grace and get some counselling quietly. I feel for him but honestly the time to go is long overdue.

Mum5net · 09/07/2024 11:36

CranfordScones · 09/07/2024 11:04

People seem to regard her as a pushy stage school mum. You do realise she was a very good tennis player who represented her country as a student, and who coached other successful players? She also sacrificed a lot for both her sons.

I can't think of a man with a better attitude to women than Andy Murray - and it's clear where it comes from - so it's inexplicable why so many women seem to hate her.

Well said.

crockofshite · 09/07/2024 11:40

I thought Judy was being sarcastic when she said 'astonished', in that she wasn't at all surprised that ER pulled out of the doubles match because she's a bit flakey, prone to injury, unreliable.

GasPanic · 09/07/2024 11:42

Difficult one.

I think after so many years at the top it would have been nice for him to appear one last time, give a little interview, thanks to the crowd etc.

Imagine working at a place for 20 years and then not being able to give a retirement speech. It's kind of similar.

I think I can understand why he may feel a bit frustrated to be able to have that time. Maybe not entirely justified, but at least understandable.
