im writing here litreally from observation of a few threads.
One the other day was about a song lyrics which was wrong being about anal sex and some of the posters made out the word sex was crude.
on one today about a women with a hangover all the comments was on 7 year old shouldn’t have been left till 10am.
there was one about a women missing a wedding with a newborn and many people were commenting saying the dad should come back that night (because imagine a women having to look after kids on her own for one night)

i read Mumsnet regularly and I find nearly every other poster to act as if they are middle class have a husband who works a good job. Have never left a child unsupervised for half a hour up to the age 10….

i don’t know if it’s me (I’m a single mum council flat which is temporary) but it seems everyone on here acts as if they live comfortably large houses if you read a thread in houses everyone’s got a en-suite I got 3 people in one room 🤣 and I’m not jelous I had a horrible life that I’ve left now have a degree and nearly a home of my own and I’m really happy just wondered if it’s fake Reply’s , fake OPs or that genuinely the demographic of users.

OP posts:
takemeawayagain · 26/05/2024 20:25

MN has always been quite London centric and fairly middle class.

Holluschickie · 26/05/2024 20:28

What would be the point of faking posts on an anon forum?
Oh also these days, women have good jobs. They don't all need their husbands to have good jobs. Unbelievable though it may be.

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2024 20:30

It is a middle class forum and although i definitely am not their usual type , I find it interesting reading all the different topics and responses and marvel at the salaries some seem to earn and just how different their life is to mine.
I like certain threads and you can tell the people who are just ordinary and don't have all the bells and whistles ( or just normal jobs!)

RoseAndRose · 26/05/2024 20:31

It's tended to be middle class because MN attracted a much higher proportion of women educated to degree level.

And of course people are more likely to post about their general standard of parenting, rather than the odd times they did something a bit reckless and got away with it.

Yeah the 175k salary discussion almost floored me... 4k childcare a month 😮 I understand its horses for courses but I earn 24k a year up north 🤣🤣
The cute kid one today was ridiculous...

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2024 20:51

I felt a bit sorry for the lady with the huge salary and not much money .. I didn't comment on it , but nursery fees are crippling and it goes to show that even the very well off are struggling with mortgages and bills and she did live in an expensive area.
Something has gone wrong with society when you read things like this ( even though many were not sympathetic etc)
To earn that kind of money must be stressful too and bringing up children seems much more stressful than it was for me too.
More pressure to be perfect.

ArmchairPhycologist · 26/05/2024 20:56

Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out love.

Pdjhwifnf · 26/05/2024 21:03

I disagree about them not leaving their kids alone until they’re 10 - you’re a bloody failure on here if your 3 year old is not tidying the house, sorting their own supper out and paying rent!

Is Netmums still around?

AnneLovesGilbert · 26/05/2024 21:04

How do we know you’re a single mum in a council house who’s done a degree?

If you’re not lying why assume everyone else is?

It shouldn’t be surprising that there’s a wide variety of experience in the world and therefore on a popular forum.

You might find a different one more fitting if you find this one isn’t for you.

Justcats · 26/05/2024 21:05

People make shit up on the internet shocker.

Best advice is to take most of MN with a huge pinch of salt.

DerekFaker · 26/05/2024 21:08

Definitely don't believe everything you read on here! Some people just like lording it over others, even if they have to make shit up to do so!

RishiSunak · 26/05/2024 21:13

Fake? FAKE! That's a bit of a shocker.
If I hadn't just prorogued Parliament I would have looked to bring in a law against it - although I dare say someone in Another Place would stick their oar in to try and scupper it.
As usual (sigh).

FFSNorman · 26/05/2024 21:16

Never lied on here. Can’t see the point.

JustMove · 26/05/2024 21:23

Most on here are, just as they are on other forums.
What they say and what they do are mostly two different things.
Take it with a large pinch of salt.

Definitely this!

DancingNotDrowning · 26/05/2024 21:27

different people live differently

i live in london, i was born in london, my DC were born in london, my parents were born in london. I’ve always lived in cities.

Sometimes posters write about living 20 mins from the nearest shop, or their DC going to a school with 60 children and whilst i know of course people live like that its sort of mind blowing because it’s so far from my frame of reference,

I guess it’s the same with other aspects. As it happens I don’t know anyone who didn’t go to university, or doesn’t own a car, or lives in a council house.

This^
I don’t have an en-suite.
Oh wait, maybe I’m lying?

thisraincangetfucked · 26/05/2024 21:31

I don't see the point of making stuff up on an anonymous forum and I don't often read a post and think "that can't be real because they don't live the same way as I do". People do have different lifestyles/incomes, that's just the reality of life.

I sometimes change minor details in case someone I know is on here though.

pizzaHeart · 26/05/2024 21:34

@DancingNotDrowning we need to introduce National service for people like you, to get you out of your bubble.
😉

OriginalUsername2 · 26/05/2024 21:35

You’re just seeing the most mental ones as they shout the loudest and takeover threads.

There are good discussions to be had and loads of really decent people on here who can understand nuance. You just have to scroll past the batshitterry sometimes!

The hangover thread is extra batshit though! It’s the first time I’ve been curious to see what the posters actually look like and live like in real life.

determinedtomakethiswork · 26/05/2024 21:37

Now you see I would say someone who had a council place and wanted to give it up soon was a fake! Everyone I know who rents would love to have that security.

LizTruss · 26/05/2024 21:37

I don't think that posting by @RishiSunak is really him.
There's something not quite right about it...
It makes one wonder if you can you trust anyone these days? 🤔

Pixiesgirl · 26/05/2024 21:43

I suspect quite a few are literally fake, as in fictional. It seems to have become more vicious and po faced as the years have gone by. The days of humour and camaraderie seem to have passed

Also seems like the user base is a lot older now. I hardly see anything about babies and little children. There used to be controversial threads threads about lots of baby rearing topics.

Akamai · 26/05/2024 21:44

I’m a bit of both. I’m from a working class background, relatives get housing benefit, mum is on pension credit, went to school with teen mums etc.

But I also see the other side at work, with most colleagues privately educated, big houses on leafy streets, Range Rovers parked at work etc, couples each on £100k+ salaries etc.

So I know that both sides of the coin exist, and I’m always non-plussed when people assume the posts by women on higher salaries must be fake.

Pixiesgirl · 26/05/2024 21:46

I miss the funny lighthearted threads. The only one I can recall making me belly laugh lately was the bison/serpent troll threads. I imagine they were banned sharpish.
