im writing here litreally from observation of a few threads.
One the other day was about a song lyrics which was wrong being about anal sex and some of the posters made out the word sex was crude.
on one today about a women with a hangover all the comments was on 7 year old shouldn’t have been left till 10am.
there was one about a women missing a wedding with a newborn and many people were commenting saying the dad should come back that night (because imagine a women having to look after kids on her own for one night)

i read Mumsnet regularly and I find nearly every other poster to act as if they are middle class have a husband who works a good job. Have never left a child unsupervised for half a hour up to the age 10….

i don’t know if it’s me (I’m a single mum council flat which is temporary) but it seems everyone on here acts as if they live comfortably large houses if you read a thread in houses everyone’s got a en-suite I got 3 people in one room 🤣 and I’m not jelous I had a horrible life that I’ve left now have a degree and nearly a home of my own and I’m really happy just wondered if it’s fake Reply’s , fake OPs or that genuinely the demographic of users.

OP posts:

I tend to take most threads at face value. Sometimes stories are ridiculous or the OP trips themselves up on little details. Generally they have a ring of truth (other than the trolls!). Sometimes posters seem to out middle class themselves. There was a thread recently about the saying "they are on the toilet" with posters going on about the vile mental image they get when they hear it. I thought, so what? Not that I particularly believed them that they are plagued with mental images every time they hear certain words - or life must be very tricky as language is rich and full of all sorts of words that would give them pause. And any time food is mentioned some posters fall over themselves with uncalled for dietary advice. Sometimes posts are just plain weird about what gives them the 'ick'.

I didn't read the thread about hangover woman, but I didn't leave DS alone before they were 10 either.

Did read the 'anal' song one which I found funny as OP had misheard the lyrics. OP didn't seem to have much of a sense of humour and later seemed to insinuate that the singer/writer may have deliberately caused her confusion! Also funny.

I have a degree and a masters but my punctuation and grammar and spelling is sometimes shocking because I'm partially sighted and use software which doesn't always format/use the words correctly

My friend has a phD and doesn't always have the right spelling, grammar and punctuation due to being dyslexic

I have another friend who has a phD that they did in the country they were living in at the time, so not even in their native language. Their English punctuation, grammar and spelling isn't always perfect but then they are managing to work in a country using their third language talking about concepts they learnt in their second language

Punctuation and grammar aren't necessarily a sign of intellectual intelligence

Understanding that some people have different needs and being empathetic and compassionate is a sign of emotional intelligence...

Thank you! I have dyslexia so I guess I should thank the DSA for helping me get my 2:1!

But this is exactly what I mean why do you waste your own time online putting people down. Do you sit there happy that you spoke to someone like shit or are you just like that in real life.

I like Mumsnet and think it can be extremely helpful I just wondered if it had just been me who noticed a lot of postered seem the same demographic and some of the OP seem unbelievable.

But why do you think things like living in a 4 bed house and not leaving your 10 year old home alone sound unbelievable? Both of those things apply to me and I think I’m fairly normal!

nothingsforgotten · 26/05/2024 22:41

I don't find that at all. I'm shocked by the many posts on here from people who are really, really, stuggling.

Of course there is going to be a selection of different types of people on MN, from the wealthy to those struggling, and those in-between. I just ignore the posters who live in their own little bubble and can't see that not everyone is like them.

Hermittrismegistus · 26/05/2024 22:45

I think it's quite sad that having a large house or not leaving a primary aged child unattended is so alien to you.

I suppose it's because it isn't representative of most women. I use mumsnet, and live in a 2 bed flat, low skilled job, and I do think it's a bit weird no one's like me here

TheaBrandt · 26/05/2024 22:49

Find it weird when people dismiss other income brackets as “not real life”. It is real life to them! Are only low income people living a real life?

Oblomov24 · 26/05/2024 22:50

Eh? What is representative of 'most women' then?

marie3e · 26/05/2024 22:51

What I mean is there's no reason the forum should be middle class

Perfectlystill · 26/05/2024 22:53

I saw someone boasting on Twitter about starting a fake thread on here and wondered how boring her life must be to do such a thing.

I never read the outlandish threads because of weirdo trolls, and always keep it in the back of my mind that any post may be nonsense.

There are loads of posters exactly like you.

Now you see I would say someone who had a council place and wanted to give it up soon was a fake! Everyone I know who rents would love to have that security.

She said she's sharing with 3 other people didn't she and it was just temporary?

marie3e · 26/05/2024 22:55

I really like the post about the scruffy neighbour, that was so funny

Mumoftwinsandasingleton · 26/05/2024 22:59

I don't get why anyone would lie? I use MN to talk about my secrets that I can't share with real people that I know. Some of the commenters think I'm fake just because my posts appear to be "unrealistic". I've never lied about a single post and struggle with why anyone would think I have! I'm fairly new here and have posted a large chunk of the stuff that has been bothering me for years. I haven't posted all the stuff on my mind because I find it so bizarre that people snoop my profile and then call me a fake. Makes me feel I can't trust the platform as much because people aren't helping me, just accusing me.

I agree there are tons of judgemental arseholes on here looking for a fight, also many high earners, but as soon as you get a thread from a high earner struggling with the cost of living the OP gets absolutely trashed. So …

Pixiesgirl · 26/05/2024 23:04

Where does the 8 million posters come from? I suspect the past.

People regularly say this on here, that everyone is mc or affluent, I actually think there’s more lower income people struggling here, in fact if you posted tomorrow about a car or a holiday or a robot hoover or a cleaner you’d have a charge of people telling you you’re disgusting and tone deaf. I don’t think people allow mn to be representative!!

Come on, the I'm on 175k and don't have any spare cash? I'm pretty sure most readers eyes rolled off to timbukto.

Content workers, journalists, the government ? Although, there is this suspicious atmosphere that almost every post I make is fake, and it is being taken a bit far

I always find the ones where the poster is on a high salary, but grammar and punctuation are of Y5 standard to be amusing. Like seriously, do you really think we believe you to be on a 100, 000 plus salary when you can barely string together a coherent sentence? How stupid do you think we are?

Pixiesgirl · 26/05/2024 23:08

Bots also, apparently more than 50% of the Internet now is bots and ai.

Not me. I’m real.
I’m happily married to my millionaire husband whose name you would definitely recognise. We are currently holidaying in our villa in Monte Carlo drinking Champagne after the Grand Prix.
Our 4 gorgeous, clever, healthy girls are at home in our London house being cared for by their 2 Norland nannies. The oldest 2 are gifted and talented and are taking their GCSEs 4 years early.
Oh, and I’m a direct descendant of the Queen of Sheba.
