Israel and Eurovision

I've seen all the protests that Israel shouldn't have been allowed to enter the Eurovision. I don't think politics should be part of eurovision

Has everyone forgotten that a lot of countries at this stage have invaded each other, and that a lot of countries have a bloody and violent past.

The United Kingdom invaded many countries and massacred and killed many many people in the past.

Germany have obviously started two world wars.

Spain have invaded countries and done a lot of brutality to people in the past.

Should none of these countries be allowed to enter eurovision then. If we are going to put politics into it, nearly every European country would be banned from eurovision.

Israel is far from the only country in the world that have invaded and massacred people. Its awful, but it has also been awful when other countries did it. And many of them have. So I'm not sure why there was just the call for Israel to be banned

I don’t know much about politics but I do know about Eurovision and it’s historically incredibly political. So your second sentence is like shouting into the wind I’m afraid 😄

BusyCM · 12/05/2024 12:20

I don't really understand why it's called Eurovision when countries don't need to be in Europe to enter...

Ace56 · 12/05/2024 12:20

I agree OP. Also I don’t really understand the reaction - when the Israeli host came on to announce the judge’s points, there were boo’s from the audience, but no boo’s when Israel performed and also it scored highly which means the general public in Europe must’ve voted for them! If everyone in Europe was so against them they wouldn’t have voted for them.

hjrl · 12/05/2024 12:21

Is it not about the fact the war is present, rather than past.

Blueemeraldagain · 12/05/2024 12:22

I think part of the issue was excluding Russia and not Israel. They set a precedent with Russia and then didn’t follow through.

MidnightPatrol · 12/05/2024 12:23

I think the idea is that Israel is currently at war.

And - Russia were not allowed to compete on these grounds, so why not Israel.

Not that I have an opinion either way tbh.

alcoholicmum243 · 12/05/2024 12:23

The song entered in the contest was about October 7th and had to have lyrics changed to be less obviously about the conflict. If Eurovision wasn't political, Sam Ryder would have won instead of Ukraine. It has always been political.

Wtafis · 12/05/2024 12:24

Ukraine is currently at war and allowed to compete so why not Israel?

Surprisedbuthappy · 12/05/2024 12:24

YABU for saying that politics shouldn't come into Eurovision. It's always been political! 🤣

ditalini · 12/05/2024 12:25

It made no sense to ban Russia and allow Israel.

Yep and the Swedish entry was the Norwegian twins! I know they live there but they’ve only lived there a few years. They were good though.

Russia are actively at war with a fellow contestant. I am guessing this was their rationale?!

StarShipControl · 12/05/2024 12:27

Agree with why not Russia?
If it's not about politics and bringing people together then let Russia enter too.
Apply the rules or don't have them.

That we didn’t win because everyone was sympathy-voting Ukraine is the real injustice here.

They use technology to drown out the boos on television so it sounds like cheering. If you watch any of the live streams or videos from people there it sounds very different. In some of the arena videos you can't hear her over the boos

You can slightly tell at times that it's not real cheering as it sounds a bit odd

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/05/2024 12:30

Israel is not in Europe. They are currently at war, it is not something they did in the past. They will be killing more Palestinian babies today. Russia was excluded from European due to invading, Ukraine, why one rule for them and another for Israel? At least part of Russia is in Europe!

There were huge boos when the singer came out at the beginning holding the Israel flag.

I read online

That apparently they banned Russia because Russia invaded Ukraine without any provocation,

Whereas this time technically israel were attacked first by Palestine, then Israel attacked back in retaliation.

In this particular war instance.

I know in previous instances israel have attacked Palestine first many times.

While Israel were cheering their Eurovision entry last night, they were also bombing the crap out of Jabaliah refugee camp maiming and killing kids and families.

I’m sorry but why the fuck should they be allowed to enter a song contest while doing that. It’s morally obscene
