To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

Screwed the NHS up.

PinkFrogss · 04/05/2024 09:42

Earned a lot of money for their mates with their dodgy deals and contracts.

pointythings · 04/05/2024 09:42

Marriage equality. That's it. Everything else has been about making things more and more shit.

rkahic · 04/05/2024 09:46

sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system, and public health , sorry, couldn’t resist the chance to quote, as the end bit then says, nothing

lavenderlou · 04/05/2024 09:47

Raised the cost of everyone's mortgages.

Made it harder to get treatment for any sort of physical or mental health problem.

Drastically reduced the money local councils have to spend on roads, social care, schools

Made it harder and more expensive to import and export goods with their completely useless Brexit "deal"

Made it harder and more expensive to travel, live or work in Europe

Caused excess deaths during the pandemic

Made rich people richer (those are the ones who will still vote for them)

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 09:48

Impression I get on the other thread is that life maybe shit under the tories but hell, it will be even worse under Labour. What a sorry state of affairs.

I can think of one. They changed exemption from road fund licence ( colloquially known as car tax) from cars registered pre 1974 to rolling. Think it's cars registered before 1982.

Obviously that only benefits owners of such vehicles, but it does apply to anyone uk resident who owns one.

jeaux90 · 04/05/2024 09:48

The only thing for me is they course corrected on one of their own goals around self ID and women's safe spaces (well I say that, it's ongoing)

They also instigated the Cass review which is addressing one of the worst medical scandals against children we have seen for years.

The LP have been feckless around this apart from a couple of MPs like Rosie Duffield.

Churchview · 04/05/2024 09:49

They've given us a Chinese owned nuclear power station in Somerset and an unfinished rail link that won't do what it was intended for in terms of speed or destination.

Technically that was a Liberal Democrat under the coalition. You give the Tories too much credit lol

Footyfandango · 04/05/2024 09:51

They have driven some disabled people to suicide

i’m pretty happy and comfortable and, most importantly, so are my children 🤷 . Really helped me out during covid in particular

not what you wanted to hear i suspect

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/05/2024 09:53

They have surrounded us with poo in our waterways.

Pretty much sums up every single thing they've touched.

Universally used as an excuse to keep voting for the Tories. Backed up by literally no evidence whatsoever. I would like one of these crystal balls people seem to be gazing in to.

BIossomtoes · 04/05/2024 09:54

They’ve made themselves unelectable. So that’s good.

Concernedforthekids · 04/05/2024 09:56

Modern slavery legislation is a big achievement (Teresa May)

Never voted for them myself mind

Linearforeignbody · 04/05/2024 09:56

All those furlough payments during COVID.
If it hadn’t been for that, many people would have lost jobs and businesses would have gone under.
People have short memories though.

leamington66 · 04/05/2024 09:58

the economic response to covid was world class and copied by other countries. They kept many businesses running and protected millions of jobs.

loverofalmonds · 04/05/2024 09:58

Yes I agree- the support was needed and generous (but unfortunately undermined by PPE contract nepotism and fraud)

TheTartfulLodger · 04/05/2024 10:04

Partied all night laughing at us and quaffing campaign while simultaneously telling us we weren't allowed to hold our loved ones hands while they died from covid. For that one alone I'll never ever forgive or forget.

That thread is full of posters who are terrified of losing a tax break on their child's private school fees if Labour get in. For the vast majority of people that is not their biggest concern.

Vile that was. They all forget that, and that photo of the queen at her husband's funeral 😔
