To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

The got rid of Liz Truss.

(OK they also put her in office, but I'm trying to look on the positive side.)

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 10:15

@Linearforeignbody not everyone received furlough, something like 3.8 million self employed people were left to fend for themselves. A labour government would have responded in exactly the same way (but undoubtedly the right wing press would have banged on about magic money trees and scroungers). The vaccine roll out had zilch to do with Boris.

the economic response to covid was world class and copied by other countries. They kept many businesses running and protected millions of jobs.

They spunked billions on a test and trace system that by their own admission failed to reach any of its targets and an all party committee found made no measurable difference to the progress of the pandemic. They also wasted 10 billion on unused or faulty PPE because they awarded private contracts to their mates instead of going through the proper channels. But yes apart from that it was a roaring success!

Bibnle636 · 04/05/2024 10:20

Kind of ironic that many of the smaller businesses they allegedly helped during Covid will now go bust thanks to Brexit - which is entirely down to the them.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 10:20

@neverbeenskiing agreed.

no country did track and trace well.
the lockdowns were to protect the intensive care beds, the pandemic had to run but at a rate that the health service could cope with. That is what happened. We came out of lockdown faster than many other countries.

I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town.

The levelling up funding has led to a significant investment in the places I'm aware of. Your local authority should be bidding for that. High streets are struggling in many places because consumers choose to buy things online.

HappiestSleeping · 04/05/2024 10:26

Given us a good laugh.

  1. Shortest term prime minister.
  2. Bringing back Dave as a Lord because he isn't an MP.
  3. Boris - everything is laughable, especially that, pre referendum, he was quoted as saying "the EU is such a good thing that if we didn't have it, we'd have to invent it".
  4. Fucking up the economy. Who would introduce policies without running them past their own cabinet, the OBR, and the bank of England? What could possibly go wrong?
  5. Fucking up the NHS. Even after an open cheque book during covid that could have brought about real meaningful change, the NHS is still struggling.

If it weren't so serious, it would be laughable.

@CranfordScones and levelling up isn’t just about town centre shopping opportunities 🙄

And because local authorities charge a fortune in business rates. Our last shoe shop closed recently as they essentially needed to make nearly 4000 profit per month just to cover static bills (rent, rates, power) before wages, stock etc. It is just not viable. The business rates were over 1500 per month.

Changed the early years curriculum multiple times. Increased the ratios in early years negatively impacting quality of care. Cut funding and grants for disadvantaged and vulnerable children worsening their outcomes. Undid all the good labour did with every child matters.

These kids then enter schools with less funding. Stressed overworked under paid teachers. Poor SEN support. Not enough new schools built for the increase in numbers of children

That's if they get a school place the amount of SEND children with no education is astounding.

At the same time increasing fines for parent of kids who cannot attend due to MH.

Allowed and encouraged medical experimentation of children

Cut NHS funding worsening outcomes for patients. Many then need more care costing more money that they would have had they been treated promptly.

Worsening maternity services. Increases in maternal deaths- particularly non white women.

Allowed the police to be used to Harris women who speak up for woman's rights.

Fostered the negative attitude against benefits claimants and vulnerable abused woman.

4 year waiting lists for mental health help for vulnerable suicidal children. Then you get a 6 week block if something and discharged.

The tories had to cope with Brexit (the referendum being forced on them by the Lib Dems) and Covid. Do you think any other government could have managed better?

I know it didn’t apply to everyone and I can’t remember the criteria, but I know several small business owners who were given 10 grand plus. One was a florist who was given 14k, instantly gave up her popular shop and has worked from home ever since. She could have done that without the money at any time.

Have you ever seen any 'great improvement' your town as a result of any party being in power? I haven't and I'm in my 50s and have lived in quite a few different places. I am not a Tory and will absolutely not be voting for them, but tbh I'm a bit baffled at how convinced some people are that a change of government will bring dramatic change of any kind.

and quickest vaccine roll out in the world

Errmm can we please credit the NHS with that, the Government did not manage the vaccination programme.

I didn't change the subject. You mentioned their "economic response" to covid. Wasting tens of billions of pounds of public money through a combination of economic incompetence and wilful corruption during the pandemic is entirely relevant when talking about their "economic response" to said pandemic. I didn't realise that meant I was only allowed to talk about jobs.

Yes, Tory supporters conveniently forget that the only elements of test and trace that actually worked effectively were managed by the NHS and local authorities while the bits the Government chose to outsource to their mates in the private sector were a disaster.
