To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

All those furlough payments during COVID.
If it hadn’t been for that, many people would have lost jobs and businesses would have gone under.
People have short memories though.

Lots of people still lost jobs and lots of businesses still went under.
Lots of working people also were not eligible for furlough because they were unlucky in when they were moving from one job to another.
LEGAL Immigrants on work and family visas couldn’t claim UC.
Everyone on UC got an extra £20 a week, but not the disabled on benefits because of discrimination.

So many fell through the cracks or were discriminated against. Furlough was about protecting the middle classes from the impact of being out of work. No such protections for key workers.

Like it or loathe it the tories gave us a choice re brexit, no gov should ever deny people that right.
The eu had totally changed beyond anything people thought it was going to be.

However I can't think of any benefits I've had at all since torys in, but I am relieved of the trans stance they are taking.

It’s really a choice when they said choose Brexit because of lies, lies and more lies.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:21

@sparklychair you do know that Brexit was a thoroughly Conservative wet
dream ? The ERG was explicitly created to push for it. The mess of Brexit is entirely a Tory creation. And aren’t prices due to go up again because of new border checks being implemented which the government has kicked into the long grass for years ?
You really couldn’t make it up..

Unfortunately both sides lie don't they it's what happens in elections, they make promises on the never never.

MiserableMarch · 04/05/2024 13:24

@Tootiredforallthiscrap it was also a far left wet dream because imported labour on a grand scale wiped out the lively hoods of many working class people.

Jeremy corybn and his team wanted brexit

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 13:28

If you think the Tories are bad just you wait for the Labour Party to have a go!!!

Startingagainandagain · 04/05/2024 13:29

Good: nothing.

Bad:

  • gave us polluted sea and rivers
  • Brexit
  • dodgy contracts for mates during the Covid crisis
  • party gate
  • taxpayer money lost through the furlough system due to fraud that had to be written off
  • blamed the homeless, immigrants and disabled people for everything
  • a worrying move to the far right
  • tried to curb freedom of speech and protest
  • corrupted the BBC to the point that it is now no longer independent
  • failed to take on greedy utility companies that are charging customers exorbitant prices
  • the madness and waste of money that is the Rwanda scheme
  • damaged our reputation abroad by behaving like petulant toddlers that could not be trusted
  • regularly lied in parliament
  • allowed a corrupt, racist police force like the Met Police that is also a threat to women to continue to operate when it should have been reformed from top to bottom
  • general corruption.

It really is endless...

I am old enough to have lived under various Labour and Conservatives government and I have never seen anything that bad as the current conservative shit show.

@youngones1
'If you think the Tories are bad just you wait for the Labour Party to have a go!!!'

This is just nonsensical at this stage to make this type of comment.

No other mainstream party from the Lib Dem to the Green would have done half of the damage to this country that the Tories have done.

The rot started with Johnson and anyone who thinks the Tories should stay in power after 14 disastrous years need their head examined.

It goes beyond right and left by the way at this point, it is about bringing back decency and competence in politics and saving this country from the dramatic decline it has faced in the past few years.

and quickest vaccine roll out in the world

The NHS rolled out the vaccine programme despite being underfunded and understaffed and being paid in "claps" rather than a proper pay increase.

Also I think pushing the vaccine through without proper testing just so Johnson could beat his chest and exclaim "world beating" at every opportunity is more worrying than a positive thing

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:31

@MiserableMarch most of the country hated Jezza. I’m pretty sure he didn’t influence many people’s vote. Cameron offered a referendum purely because of UKIP stealing votes. Most of the party wanted one and the current party now is full of brexiteers. Please don’t rewrite history. It’s entirely a Tory thing.

This is a standard response from a tory voter. No example, no substance, just hypothetical fear mongering. Tories have been in power 14 years, they cannot continue to blame labour for everything or use the excuse of what ever they decide to make up that day that they might do!

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:33

@youngones1 how do you know Labour will be worse. Where’s your crystal ball ? Why aren’t you questioning the Tory record ? Why should people vote for the same old same old that clearly isn’t working. Awaits the claim that they’re all the same when they obviously aren’t.

David Cameron pleaded with voters to vote Remain, you can't blame the Tories for Brexit.

MiserableMarch · 04/05/2024 13:33

No it was a country thing!
That's why ukip was taking the vote.

Re write a history 😂.
It doesn't matter how many people liked or didn't like jc, I'm not sure how many people liked Cameron? Does it matter?
Jc represents the far left and they wanted brexit and you can understand why to be fair.

MiserableMarch · 04/05/2024 13:34

Oh yes I 6 had forgotten that, Cameron didn't want it.

Many people on all sides did or didn't want it

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 13:36

@youngones1 so labour have the equivalent of the ERG, a large and vocal group designed specifically to take the UK out of the EU ? I think not. Most of the Conservative Party is a Brexit party clone now.
Cameron reluctantly campaigned for remain. Any one would think he secretly supported Leave….
Love it how tories are trying to rewrite history.

Don't forget the aqueduct.

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 13:41

Starmer seems to be happy with Brexit but too, he toesnt even want to join the single market!

Efh · 04/05/2024 13:43

Leaving aside that any government generally wants to serve itself and stay in power…and anything done is for vote not for voters…

the Tory govt got us vaccinated against covid quickly. Boris Johnson even had plans to do an SAS style raid on some facilities abroad if they refused to supply the vaccines reserved by the UK.

For this, I am grateful as I would have likely died of Covid. It affected me very badly.

that said, I didn’t vote Tory.

If someone is prepared to say that the decision to hold the referendum is the Lib Dems fault they'll evidently make anything up.

David Cameron pleaded with voters to vote Remain, you can't blame the Tories for Brexit.

Actually, I can blame them. Have a referendum, no problem with that, however he should have set a bar for a clear decision. 60 or 70% would have worked. As it was, that referendum would have swung either way by a few percent if you'd run it every day for a week.

Arrogant twat didn't think for a minute that the electorate would be stupid enough to vote for it. Even the leavers were amazed. So unprepared were they that not one of them actually had a plan to implement should they win.

Trouble is, whenever you make something idiot proof, someone comes up with a better idiot.
