Am I the only person that doesn't like Taylor Swift?

Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

@OldHabitsDieScreaming

So true! I forgot about ME! I know it's not popular with some swifties but I love that song.

Taylor was an emo kid back in 2005 so she's probably been a long term panic and parmore fan.

2mummies1baby · 21/04/2024 10:57

The only song of hers I can name is 'Shake it Off', which I find intensely irritating.

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 21/04/2024 11:00

@DiaryOfaTTCer I really hate ME! Drives me up the fucking wall (that and London Boy which I hope never to hear again before I die).

She does make life hard for fans sometimes by releasing dross like that 😂

Auburngal · 21/04/2024 11:09

I’m not a fan of majority of modern music.

Besides the music made in the 60s-80s is still played today.

Will today’s music be played in 40-60 years time? Seriously doubt it!

I also love ME! It’s a fun pop banger, what’s not to like?

Speak now I think veers into that sort of emo kid music, better than revenge and haunted off the top of my head.

Arrestedmanevolence · 21/04/2024 11:33

My tween isn't interested in the latest album at all. I think it's.not poppy enough. I wish I had two hours to listen to it but I haven't so find it hard to appreciate the lyrics and story behind it all like others seem to.

Ihateboris · 21/04/2024 11:33

Nope, I really don't get the hype. Horses for courses I suppose.

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 21/04/2024 11:40

Oh, Better Than Revenge is a great song! I love furious Taylor. Great guitars too.

I don't listen to Speak Now enough really; I tend to veer towards Rep and then all the lockdown albums onwards. Might stick it on the headphones this afternoon (after a couple of hours spent in serious contemplation of TTPD ...)

DD and her friends like her, but I couldn’t name a single one of her songs.

Wooloohooloo · 21/04/2024 15:04

She's inoffensive enough- no strong feelings either way. She has some catchy songs and seems like a typical pop singer? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8 year old DD loves her. I like metal/rock so pop isn't really my cup of tea anyway.

Out of curiosity - because my kids are adults now

How do you keep the not child friendly songs from an 8 yr old nowadays?

When mine were that age I could put singles in their mp3 players or buy themed compilation cds and they only left the odd album they asked for to vet.

But from reputation onwards Taylor has some really not appropriate for kids songs and lyrics, how does that work if you’re streaming? I know you can block explicit lyrics, but what about the other stuff?

CortieTat · 21/04/2024 16:41

I’ve heard about her of course but I can’t name or remember a single song. I have a tween at home and she likes Depeche Mode and Iron Maiden. DM probably because we’ve been at their concert together and she loved it. I’ve never seen her listening to or looking for pop songs. I feel quite blessed.

If you have a shared subscription, you can block explicit lyrics, you can also set the age for your child account. There’s also Spotify for Kids which my children had when they were younger.

while swearing is alot more common in modern pop albums most artists, including Taylor, have 'clean' versions available on streaming. Regarding lyrical content it's remarkable what will go over kids heads. I grew up in 90's and songs like Sex on the Beach were regulars at discos, and I was a big Spice Girls fan and 2 Become 1 was a hit, and that never mattered, I didn't understand. I presume it's a similar attitude now.

I know about clean versions - my DD was young enough when Rihanna brought out S&M that she only ever heard the radio edit

I was thinking more of things that aren’t explicit but also aren’t particularly ambiguous, like, only bought this dress so you can take it off - for example, can’t say I’d be particularly comfortable with an 8 yr old singing dress at all tbh 😂 but that line especially, but I know Spotify plays me random songs after a playlist finishes and wondered how that works

like, do you just have to accept that you can’t vet things quite the same now? Or is there something I’m missing because I haven’t needed it?

sorry, but of a tangent, I just wondered

I often find the people declaring that she's bland/crap/can't sing/can't stand her say it like a badge of honour and to sound somehow superior to masses - kind of like the people who declare proudly they've never watched an episode of Friends/Game of Thrones/whatever.

If you think she only writes songs for teenage girls then you've not listened to her last 4 albums - some of her writing is truly beautiful - and whilst she doesn't have the vocal range of Whitney/Mariah/Adele, she can most certainly sing. She's a songwriter who sings, not a singer who can write.

Her new album wasn't written to win accolades or awards (although it most certainly will imo) - it was written for herself, and to close a chapter in her life. She has openly stated she writes songs as therapy.

She's grown up and learned life lessons in the harshest spotlight, had her art sold from under her, reclaimed her name after people shamed her, and still works her ass off. My 10 year old absolutely adores her and I think she is an absolute badass.

And in her own words "The worst kind of person is someone who makes someone else feel bad, dumb or stupid about something"

Depeche Mode are pop?! I love them too.

I don’t know! I think they are DM :-) The concerts are definitely much more rock than pop.

But you say you feel "blessed" your DD doesn't like pop?

i'm baffled. But this thread is full people trying to prove their indie record is much cooler than anyone else's 🤷🏻‍♀️

TS did a full gig playing guitar with Def Leppard - not rock enough?

I will shake it off by watching a DM classic

You can easily explain my answer by assuming that I’m old. Basically a dinosaur :-) Can’t get enough is very nice to sing along while cooking!

StMarieforme · 21/04/2024 19:26

Utterly agree. Sick of these 'adored' artists singing out a lost love from bloody years ago, or that they were with for a matter of weeks. You're 34 Taylor, and Adele you're 35 - stop whining!

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2024 19:29

@CortieTat I would bet money I'm older than you. feeling "blessed" by anything ...and particularly that you think your DD doesn't like pop!

I'm older than you for sure!

I've had a few emails from relatives referencing a whole bunch of personal shit about TS that they saw in the "news". I'm there for the music, the lyrics, the show.

I don't recall seeing any man get so much hate on MN.

They're not 'whining', they're working.
