Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

no i dont get it-the absolute fawning over some new album- omg i ant breathe an omg my life has change are some thinmgs ive read just today

a couple of songs are ok but no way in 50 years are people going to be playing them as classics

That's a ridiculous assumption. Of course they will be.

In 50 years what do you think people will be listening to? Popular music of today will be classics.

Similar to Madonna. Similar to many popular artists.

Thevelvelletes · 20/04/2024 19:29

Never heard any of her material.
Get fed up of the never ending articles about her and whichever man is on the go

Grapewrath · 20/04/2024 19:31

Her first album was good but tbh im completely over her whining about other people. She’s still going on about exes and Kim K years after the events- bore off. She just comes across as a petulant and bitter teenager tbh

TyneTeas · 20/04/2024 14:47

My teen read TS lyrics at me earlier.

I felt like I was being subjected to Vogon poetry, however as she does seem quite popular, her songs seemingly must appeal to a lot of others.

😂

Music doesn't appeal, a bit meh, but the gorgeous, clever Hadley Freeman (journalist/writer) is a mega fan and says she's a very poet-erly lyric writer, which I agree with. I'm going to try to learn to like her. My daughter has a ticket to a concert in June so will be delighted to play her music in the house.

Huh? You think her music is meh but because someone else likes her, you’re going to try and like her yourself? Weird.

fatphalange · 20/04/2024 19:35

I find the whole Swifty thing bewildering. Plain woman who releases bland, bland music.

Go to any wedding and generally they don't tend to play much modern stuff at all, do they? I know they are catering for all ages, but they will mostly play for the bride and groom's generational tastes and the rest will be classics that everyone likes. I just can't imagine most generic pop hits of today becoming future wedding classics.

The music is schlock and will not stand the rest of time. I tried listening and it was dreadful rubbish.

pourmeawine · 20/04/2024 19:37

As Taylor fan since the first album, the need to enthusiastically say you're NOT a Taylor fan and criticise everything she does has always confused me.

Other people have relationships and don't get the criticism Taylor does.
Other people write songs about their life and don't get the criticism Taylor does.
Other people are in the press and don't get the criticism Taylor does.

I agree that some Taylor fans take it too far but the reason that Taylor fans are defensive is because it's never really made sense that that people seem to go out of their way to give negative opinions on Taylor and that doesn't really seem fair.

I agree with this. Sometimes people ask me why I don't listen to ABBA, the Beatles etc. I have tried but I just don't have that personal connection to it because I didn't grow up with that music.

I grew up with 90s pop (d'oh!) and that's what's 'classic' to me 😂

SevenSeasOfRhye · 20/04/2024 19:41

I don't think I know any of her music. I don't pay much attention to 21st century music; occasionally I hear something I like on the radio but mostly I stay in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

SquashPenguin · 20/04/2024 19:41

Nope, boring as fucking sin.

Im a metalhead and I still have soft spots for Britney and Nsync from my childhood but TS is just so bland in my opinion 🥱

ClinkeyMonkey · 20/04/2024 19:41

You are not permitted to say you don't like Taylor Swift. Her fans swoop in and tell it's internalised misogyny and that you just haven't listened PROPERLY. Then some disembodied lyrics will be quoted at you in the hope that you will magically change your opinion of her. Taylor Swift's fans are very, very defensive. I have never in my life felt the need to justify my taste in music to anyone. Some of the artists I like have been criticised on here. But I couldn't care any less if I tried.

AcheyBalzac · 20/04/2024 19:42

I liked Shake It Off. Think she comes across a bit waspish/cold

toastofthetown · 20/04/2024 19:44

Does it matter what will and will not be played in 50 years time? None of us can know that. Most art today will likely not be around in 50 years regardless of quality as most generations prefer contemporaneous things. I'm sure some crap will survive and some brilliant things will be forgotten as it ever was. I'm a Taylor Swift fan, and I couldn't care less what her legacy is. I just like her music today and so I listen to it. Maybe I'll still be a fan and maybe she'll still be culturally relevant in 50 years. Maybe not, but I'll figure that out when I'm there.

I can dislike Taylor Swift without going out of my way. Her music and style is boring to me. I take no interest in her relationships so I can’t comment on that.

If you think she gets it bad, you want to have a look at the KPop industry. That is unhinged.

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2024 19:48

I’m just completely indifferent to her, no like or dislike from me. The radio stations I listen to don’t really play her music so I don’t ever listen to her stuff.

pourmeawine · 20/04/2024 19:52

@SquashPenguin you're "going out of your way" by posting on a thread about Taylor Swift and saying you dislike her. There's a lot of music acts, including K Pop that I just don't have an opinion on. I don't like them, I don't dislike them, I just don't care. My point was that Taylor seems to have a lot of people who feel the need to say they actively dislike her. And that's weird to me.

It's not that it's internalised misogyny to dislike Taylor Swift, and I don't think anyone has said that. It's the 'am I the only one who doesn't like Taylor Swift' attitude, which has a whiff of the not like other girls attitude. Outside of Taylor Swift, things which are popular with women and girls but not men and boys are bashed in popular media and seen as vapid and less important: romance novels, fashion, pop music, makeup etc. No-one has to like any music artist they don't like. But when it thread like this about women's (and working class) interests happens over and over it starts to feel like a pattern and it's not pleasant.

Blackcats7 · 20/04/2024 20:19

I must live in a bubble because although I have heard of her when mentioned on bbc news app I have never heard any of her music.
Is she really worth all the worship she appears to receive?

You can have you opinion sure.

But your musical opinion doesn't negate the woman has 14 Grammys and is the number one artist streamed on Spotify.

No one has to like her. It's just silly to act like she won't stand the test of time when her music already is. Her first album is almost 20 years old and still played on the radio.

I don't like the Beatles but recognize they clearly have talent. They were a cultural phenomenon.
Just because I don't get it, doesn't mean they don't have talent.

GellerYeller · 20/04/2024 19:25

@SpicyMoth which MCR show were you at? I’m trying to figure out who the support was!

Oh god, yonks ago! - I think it might've been 2011??
It was at o2 in London, Danger Days tour! :)

TheMerryTiger · 20/04/2024 20:31

So what? Does it matter? I think Beyonce, Rihanna, and Madonna ridiculously overrated - that's my opinion. FFS. I could not name 3 Taylor Swift songs - so what?!!!
