Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

This is the first TS thread I’ve clicked on (except the one about scam tickets the other day), and I’m finding very similar language to the Meghan & Harry threads. That’s interesting to me, as I’ve never understood some posters’ strength of feeling on either side re that couple. Such strong feelings re TS here. Ascerbic in their disdain and defensiveness, aggressively assertive. Same MO as those who defend Meghan. I wonder if this strongly felt tribalism is a thing? Was Beatlemania like this? Or Diana-fever? I’m not old enough to know re the former, but I get the impression it wasn’t as sharp-edged? I am old enough to know re the latter and I don’t remember it being vicious. Maybe I’m wrong.

You are quite right. The weirdly strong and frankly obsessive opinions are something you see with lots of subjects. It like American politics.
People are so determined to 'win' that they will defend their positions even when the subject of their obsession is displaying terrible behaviours. They will apply saint like attributes to beit Trump or Princess Kate or TS and paint the object of their dislike as absolute villains.

There will be psychological terminology for this. I wonder what it is.

People become fanatically tribal.

Good role model for girls? She only ever seems to be bitching about men who've let her down (again). To me that's her "thing". She has one boyfriend after another and seems to be one of those women who can't ever be happy without a man. The shared enjoyment of this "all men are bastards who let you down" narrative amongst her fans is quite unnerving. Particularly when at the same time she projects an image which is overtly sexually appealing to men with her red pouty lips and coquettish looks from under her fringe. She's not really someone I'd think of as role model material. Give me Billie Eilish over Taylor Swift any day (not that I listen to Billie Eilish either....)

A man essentially stole all her music, so she re recorded it to reclaim ownership of it. I don't recall anyone else ever doing that.

She is constantly attacked by male owned media but she always takes the high road.

She writes songs about the patriarchy and uniquely female experiences such as miscarriage.

I'm not particularly a fan but yeah - standing up for yourself against the patriarchy does make her a role model.

burnttoad · 21/04/2024 08:10

@Heartoverhead1
No man stole her music. She signed a deal and as with many deals, the label owned the master copies. It's not theft. It was a straightforward contract.

Out of interest had the record label been owners by a woman then how would you have described the scenario?

Revelatio · 21/04/2024 08:11

Yes, you are the only person in the world who doesn’t like Taylor Swift. Congratulations!

I have put the whole new album on Alexa. It's very bland. Five songs in.
It's a bit Lana del Ray in places

Lana Del Rey is much better IMO!

Aishah231 · 21/04/2024 08:14

She clearly has a good marketing team. The music as you say is 'meh'. I suspect people just don't like to feel left out hence if they can afford it might go to her concerts etc. it's a good night out, something to tell people kind of thing. I imagine it's only the tweens who actually get excited and really like the music

SevenSeasOfRhye · 21/04/2024 08:15

In the interests of research, I listened to a couple of Taylor Swift songs on YouTube and can confirm she's not my cup of tea. I prefer melody or rhythm driven music, rather than a generic 'backdrop' to a singer; and I don't like that muted, verging on whiny with a hint of electronic mangling style of singing, I prefer a singer who belts it out.

LolliesInTheSun · 21/04/2024 08:22

Nothing against her. She seems to be THE female pop star of the moment and more power to her. Always good to see women smashing it.

I don’t like her music, personally. Bland and juvenile.

But different strokes and all that.

while I wouldn't personally describe it as stealing there was dodgy dealings here. Taylor had no idea the masters were even for sale and being sold until the deal was done. The record label owner has claimed it was as simple as Taylors masters being an item he owned of value that he wanted to realise financially. Fair, but if that is true, why not bring to the negotiating table an (at the time) multi-millionaire who is more desperate that anyone in the world to buy what he is selling. Taylor may or may not not have had the financial backing at the time to actually reach the right price, but if all the record owner wanted was financial gain, then let her try or at least be another interested party to boost the price. And he knew she wanted them as she tried to included them in her future contracts with them, Taylor saw this as a betrayal and I can see why. Just because he acted within the realms of the legalities doesn't make it not a dick move.

@storminabuttercup Strong "I only listen to bands that haven't been invented yet" vibes from some posters on this thread.

Yeah reminds me of the cool kids at school who scoffed at others for being sheep for liking main stream stuff

At my school you were more likely to be scoffed at if you mentioned a taste for anything other than the mainstream. Fortunately, I liked A-ha, Wet Wet Wet etc. (still do love 80s music) and I kept quiet about listening to my mum's Incredible String Band albums at home. 60s/70s music was very uncool to 80s teenagers, at least at my school; liking it was a social death equivalent to wearing flared jeans.

Viewfrommyhouse · 21/04/2024 08:52

Not really my thing in general, but I do love Style, great song. I like what I see of her though. She seems pretty strong and cool.

Why does she remind you of a blow up doll? This comment seems misogynistic.

She's anything but a 'blow up doll'. In fact I admire her for not appearing to go down the Kardashian/Jenner let's alter our lips and bodies via surgery beyond all recognition route.

It's amazing the stadiums she's selling out multiple nights over by writing her own songs and playing instruments without resorting to the get your tits out shock tactics, no matter if her music is to your taste or not.

CamoPenguin · 21/04/2024 09:17

Her music is very bland, nothing special. However, if she can make money out of it, fair enough. I do think the amounts people are paying to see her are insane and it's not fair to take so much, then again most artists are charging over the odds now.

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 21/04/2024 09:50

She reminds me of a blow up doll

Casual misogyny of the most repulsive kind, directed at someone whose worst crime is to sing songs that are not to your personal taste.

Some of you really are fucking awful people.

OneTC · 21/04/2024 09:53

It's just more bland pop to me

IAmNeverGoingToChangeCareer · 21/04/2024 10:00

I think her music is incredibly bland.

My Daughters love her, and after being subjected to so many songs as a result, I really feel with her like she goes through the motions of selecting a slightly different style in a song from time to time just to be more profitable and try and appeal to more people. It just doesn’t seem genuine to me.

DiaryOfaTTCer · 21/04/2024 10:19

DrJoanAllenby · 20/04/2024 17:55

No, far from it. Can't sing, toxic lyrics about all of her boyfriends and satanic stage performances.

Considering how everyone is up in arms about transgender women I can't understand the love for her on here or hasn't the penny dropped?

WTF does Taylor swift have to do with transgender women?

DiaryOfaTTCer · 21/04/2024 10:22

SpicyMoth · 20/04/2024 18:24

Hate it, but I'm more a Paramore, Panic at the disco fan anyway! So ofc I'd hate it haha 😂

She has a song which paramore feature on and paramore is performing as the supporting artist in the European leg of her tour

And Brandon Urie from Panic! At The Disco appears on the Lover album and in the Miss Americana documentary.

But being a fan of those two bands is solid-gold proof that you will 'of course' 'hate' TS's music, apparently.

This place is so fucking odd at times.

PermanentlyTired03 · 21/04/2024 10:38

I really dislike how she releases 10editions of every album them gives everyone acces to the whole lot an hour later. Knowing many of her fans will spend £200 on all the editions with the extra songs. Excellent business model hence the billionaire status but she really rinses her fans. Same can be said for many artists I’m sure though.

You are disgustingly misogynistic. I don't even know where to begin with this comment. She might be a celebrity, but she's a person too.

Taylor Swift Stan till the day I die. Loved her for 15 years and will keep on loving her. Been there for me since I was 14 (I am 28 now)

But no, you are not the only one who doesn't like her, loads of people don't and that's ok. I just find it funny everyone always has to announce how much they dislike her, as if trying to prove something 🤣

Me too! All of this Grin
