Am I the only person that doesn't like Taylor Swift?

Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

OP posts:
BeaRF75 · 20/04/2024 20:48

It's not that I don't like her, but I don't think I've ever heard any of her songs! I certainly couldn't name any. She is reaching a certain demographic, but surely any of us over 40 won't have a clue?

I'm 46 and I love her. Lol

It's interesting though that she's a powerful woman and for some reason she gets targeted.

I never see people say this about Harry Styles or Justin Bieber.

Or even Drake who is the top male artist in Spotify

SummaLuvin · 20/04/2024 20:54

@BeaRF75 contrary to what the OP has said, I don't think Taylor has ever been catering to child or teeny bopper audiences, always fairly mainstream pop and radio.

If you are 40 her debut album and single came out when you were 22, and her break-through UK hit of Love Story when you were 25, so if would surprise me if you hadn't heard anything of her as you would have to have had your finger off the pulse of popular music from a pretty young age.

I’m 45 😂

It's not that it's internalised misogyny to dislike Taylor Swift, and I don't think anyone has said that. It's the 'am I the only one who doesn't like Taylor Swift' attitude, which has a whiff of the not like other girls attitude. Outside of Taylor Swift, things which are popular with women and girls but not men and boys are bashed in popular media and seen as vapid and less important: romance novels, fashion, pop music, makeup etc. No-one has to like any music artist they don't like. But when it thread like this about women's (and working class) interests happens over and over it starts to feel like a pattern and it's not pleasant.

I would have said "not like the other girls" is central to Taylor Swift' own branding of herself. That's how it comes across.

I can't even guess what this might have to do with being working class, but I am intrigued.

Go to any wedding and generally they don't tend to play much modern stuff at all, do they? I know they are catering for all ages, but they will mostly play for the bride and groom's generational tastes and the rest will be classics that everyone likes. I just can't imagine most generic pop hits of today becoming future wedding classics.

One of Ed Sheeran's songs was the nr one first wedding dance song for years (Perfect (?)). I hear some modern songs a lot at weddings.

Although I'm not a fan of Swift or Sheeran. But I'm not their audience.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 20/04/2024 21:33

Not sure I've ever heard any of her stuff (I am totally un-interested in music).

51 in a few weeks. No DDs either, fwiw.

Back in ‘my day’ (god!) it was Kylie or Madonna. Same thing- great at pivoting and making music and being prolific

I actually think Madonna was much more varied and so was Kylie once she found her own style.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/04/2024 22:14

Same here. I have nothing against her and I admire her success. I'm a teacher with a tutor group of 12 and 13yo girls, including lots of Swifties. I thought there must be something about her music to make them love it so much, so I had a good listen. Nope. It's just pleasant, very generic pop. Neither the lyrics nor the tunes stand out at all for me.

ichundich · 20/04/2024 22:18

Josette77 · 20/04/2024 19:28

That's a ridiculous assumption. Of course they will be.

In 50 years what do you think people will be listening to? Popular music of today will be classics.

Similar to Madonna. Similar to many popular artists.

Sorry, but you are deluded.

Onabench · 20/04/2024 22:24

There has been many a "I hate Taylor swift" trains OP, you obviously aren't alone.

Anyone using her singles to judge her music is sorely missing out however.

Many of her songs are like poetry to me and I love the last 3/4 albums

Not sure how you pin her down to a kids bop artist

Clover blooms in the fields
Spring breaks loose, the time is near
What would he do if he found us out?
Crescent moon, coast is clear
Spring breaks loose, but so does fear
He's gonna burn this house to the ground
How's one to know?
I'd live and die for moments that we stole
On begged and borrowed time
So tell me to run
Or dare to sit and watch what we'll become
And drink my husband's wine
Oh, goddamn
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
Taking mine, but it's been promised to another
Oh, I can'tS top you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered in you
And I'm covered in you

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/04/2024 22:30

I have no objection to generic pop btw. I just don't understand why so many people think TS is anything more than that. The one you quote is certainly a bit more creative, @Onabench , but not really out of the ordinary for a relationshippy pop song.

mlc0 · 20/04/2024 22:34

Taylor Swift Stan till the day I die. Loved her for 15 years and will keep on loving her. Been there for me since I was 14 (I am 28 now)

But no, you are not the only one who doesn't like her, loads of people don't and that's ok. I just find it funny everyone always has to announce how much they dislike her, as if trying to prove something 🤣

pourmeawine · 20/04/2024 22:43

Taylor:
And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well
And you call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
'Cause I remember it all, all, all
Too well

Generic Pop:
Don't love me for fun, girl
Let me be the one, girl
Love me for a reason
Let the reason be love

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 20/04/2024 22:47

As I said upthread, I avoid quoting lyrics because (even though I think she's a fantastic lyricist) out of context it rarely works. She has a beautiful, expressive voice too, which injects so much emotion and nuance into what she writes.

Of course, someone will now be along to say she's a crap singer because she doesn't belt like Whitney Houston, or moan that she doesn't twirl upside down on parachute silks during her live shows like Pink does, or complain that she didn't write Bohemian Rhapsody like Freddie Mercury did...

dustyspring · 20/04/2024 22:51

I don't get it either. I like a couple of her songs so I've listened to some of her albums in the hopes of getting into her more, but a lot of songs all sound the same to me. I don't think her music is for kids or teens but I find the lyrics a bit cringe and her voice doesn't stand out to me. I suppose it's all subjective. I just feel like I can't escape her at the moment.

EmmaEmerald · 20/04/2024 23:04

@DrJoanAllenby Satanic? Come on, you know better than that.

Josette77 · 21/04/2024 01:20

ichundich · 20/04/2024 22:18

Sorry, but you are deluded.

Do you think fans of hers will no longer listen to her music in 50 years?

It's not being deluded it's being rational. She's the biggest selling female artist. Of course people will still be listening to her.

Plus as I said she's been around for almost 20 years already. She is not new to the music scene. She has proved her longevity.

SamW98 · 21/04/2024 01:35

I’ve seen her name in the media but I don’t know anything about her and I don’t know any of her songs.

But tbh mainstream pop has never been something I’m interested in. I’m a 55 year old into soulful and funky house though so not the target audience.

coxesorangepippin · 21/04/2024 01:35

Yeah I don't get it

But I'm 42 and cynical

Anyotherdude · 21/04/2024 06:06

shoppingshamed · 20/04/2024 17:37

Unless you don't engage with any kind of media id be surprised if you haven't heard any of her songs, maybe you didn't know it was here but her well known songs are hard to avoid

Clearly not! I just indulged you by googling her songs and did not recognise any of them from the titles! Well - that’s today’s Spotify journey sorted out!
I’ll report back later…

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/04/2024 06:21

I don't understand the extremes of feelings towards her. People either act like she's the second coming of Prince or a talentless hack and....neither of those are true. She writes generally appealing pop songs with catchy hooks, and she does it well. There's nothing groundbreaking or innovative about her music, but its fun and pleasant to listen to.

storminabuttercup · 21/04/2024 07:49

Jeez, this thread got worse.

'She's got shit hair!' I'm not a huge fan I like her, think she's pretty savvy, like some of her stuff, which seems to be the theme on here for those of us not wanting to prove we're the cool kids, but comments like that are utterly pathetic. Wtf has her hair got to do with anything? I can't believe I'm reading comments from grown women.

You all 'need to calm down'

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/04/2024 08:03

@storminabuttercup Strong "I only listen to bands that haven't been invented yet" vibes from some posters on this thread.
