Am I the only person that doesn't like Taylor Swift?

Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

Who's Taylor Swift?

🤣 come on.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/04/2024 16:29

It's an age thing. I think I had the best teenage/student years in the 80s and 90s and feel sorry that kids today don't have anything like as enjoyable an experience. eg a "proper" affordable nightlife, such as going to clubs, diverse venues for all tastes, weekly if you wanted. Grassroots music venues for new bands starting out where you could see them for a couple of quid. Sometimes I'd be out 2 or 3 times in a week.

Whereas now young people seem to save up for a very expensive huge event like a Taylor Swift arena concert and build it all up into something massive?

I remember when I was young when my older relatives used to discuss the fun times they had when music was "better", that they had more fun at "dance halls" and liked being asked formally for a dance or a date, and to be "walked home" etc etc, which sounded very old fashioned to me at a time when I was bouncing around in mosh pits in rock clubs and snogging the faces of randoms.

But I bet what I did in my youth seems equally as old fashioned to the youth of today. Times move on. I think our tastes get stuck in those of our formative years, that's all.

Canwegetanothercat · 20/04/2024 16:30

I know what you mean. I know people are sarcastically saying “no you’re the only person in the world who doesn’t like her” but it just feels like she’s SO big and SO popular that to not like her is the minority. I don’t know anyone in real life who doesn’t like her. I don’t get it either.. I don’t understand the massive hype. Her songs are very bland and samey and the lyrics are cringe. We all understand that different people like different things and have different music tastes, but she’s basically dominating the music industry and it’s a bit baffling as to why. Her fan base is enormous so she could release absolutely anything at this point and it will be praised

nadine90 · 20/04/2024 16:31

It’s not my usual taste, I don’t seek her out to listen to, but will happily sing along if she’s on the radio. I grew up loving the Spice Girls, Boyzone, S Club 7, none of whom I would like if they came out now. It’s the pop music of our time.
As pop music goes, I dislike TS much less than many other current artists. Most of all I find this kind of talk extremely dull. We all like different things. I don’t like bananas but don’t feel a burning desire to talk about it and find out if people agree with me on that.

lovied · 20/04/2024 16:04

See none of this is groundbreaking. It's like you're all brainwashed Grin

So music falls into two categories, groundbreaking or crap?

harriettenightingale · 20/04/2024 16:31

But her songs DID all sound the same. She did a couple of memorable ones, Spinning Around, Can't Get you out of my head. Can't think of any others between Locomotion and the one she did with Jason Donovan, and the Padum one or whatever it was called.

Yes, and so do Taylor Swift's. I was a Kylie fan too like pp and I didn't think they all sounded the same then. It's personal taste.

I do think Taylor is a good role model for girls though, just not sold on the music.

TwilightSkies · 20/04/2024 16:32

All her songs sound really similar. I find her very blah and don’t get the hype whatsoever. £500 for a concert ticket? 😳

Chipsfishseasaltandvinegar · 20/04/2024 16:33

No idea who she is, what she sings and couldn't care less !

SlowSeep · 20/04/2024 16:35

TinkerTiger · 20/04/2024 14:40

Yes, you're the only one, no one else is as enlightened as you, you are a superior human.

(And no, I'm not a TS fan, I just know that we don't all like the same things and that making posts feigning confusion at why people like a thing is tired and boring).

Agreed. Tedious beyond belief. And I too am not a fan.

renthead · 20/04/2024 16:35

I didn't think much of her until we went on a road trip last month and my DDs made me listen to her back catalogue ad nauseam. There is certainly a TS sound, but within that there is a ton of musical diversity and she is an excellent lyricist. I'm now a fan!

Swifties are crazy though, and she is certainly overhyped at the moment.

lovied · 20/04/2024 16:39

burnttoad · 20/04/2024 16:26

She's catchy and sing along to but my issue is that she just disses all her ex boyfriends. We all know people like this irl. Either people we know or Z listers running to the tabloids. Always bleating about how crap their ex was. Blaming them for everything. Telling everyone everything wrong with them. How toxic they were. How narcissistic etc. it's always their fault. We generally don't like these people. Yet somehow people think Swift is great for doing just this.

I agree. The lady doth protest too much.

YaMuvva · 20/04/2024 16:40

I agree, not my kind of music.

Mistymornin · 20/04/2024 16:40

IMO Taylor Swift cannot hold to Amy Winehouse with regard to song writing but she does know how to put on a concert.

peakygold · 20/04/2024 16:42

A woman who totally relies on men for her happiness? Someone who bounces from one 'serious' relationship to another? A woman who looks at all of her boyfriends (in published photos) like "oh, please worship me like I worship you"? Someone who washes her very soiled linen in public to make a buck? No, I cannot bear her. And, for a billionaire, she has really shit hair.

SlowSeep · 20/04/2024 16:44

The thing is, I find it easy to ignore the hype. My 19y daughter is a super fan and going to three Wembley concerts this summer. There is a lot of TS chat that goes on at home. But only external exposure I get is if I choose to click on a relevant article on a news website.

What are people seeing to get so ground down by her? Is she infiltrating their dreams? Turning up at their workplace? Swapping their Spotify soundtracks to her songs? I find her easier to avoid unless my daughter bleats on about her.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/04/2024 16:46

Good role model for girls? She only ever seems to be bitching about men who've let her down (again). To me that's her "thing". She has one boyfriend after another and seems to be one of those women who can't ever be happy without a man. The shared enjoyment of this "all men are bastards who let you down" narrative amongst her fans is quite unnerving. Particularly when at the same time she projects an image which is overtly sexually appealing to men with her red pouty lips and coquettish looks from under her fringe. She's not really someone I'd think of as role model material. Give me Billie Eilish over Taylor Swift any day (not that I listen to Billie Eilish either....)

Yes, that’s my point! TS songs all sound the same too. Kylie songs didn’t sound the same to me as a tween, I thought they were all amazing! Probably much like TS fans now.

PermanentlyTired03 · 20/04/2024 16:49

I like her older stuff- the past 4 albums have been a bit meh though. I like 1-2 songs off each album.

MariaLuna · 20/04/2024 16:54

Ha! I wouldn't even know a song of hers if I heard it....

I know she's a super star right now but it comes nowhere near my taste in music.

But then I grew up with the Beatles and Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley etc. Great times!

EndlessVortex · 20/04/2024 16:54

It’s fine to not like her, but if you genuinely listened to the new album and thought it was music for children then you’re either being deliberately obtuse or lying. I could see you saying this about some of her earlier stuff, but since she’s started working with Aaron Dessner (the last four albums) it’s all been very mature sounding.

Corilee2806 · 20/04/2024 16:57

Definitely don’t see where you’re getting the ‘for kids/tweens’ from! when I’m playing her music to my 5 year old daughter it’s the classic pop like ‘shake it off’ as kids tend to love that. No way would I play her TTPD - in fact accidentally had it on yesterday in the car with her and her friend and ‘Down Bad’ came on, when I heard the lyrics had to hastily switch off! Swearing aside, the content and themes of her music on her recent albums is very mature and with the more mellow sound, I can’t really see it appealing to younger ones.

But as people have said, she has a very broad fan base and with 11 albums she has a huge range of styles to please all sorts of tastes!

And of course she isn’t for everyone, I’ve seen as much negative as positive coverage on the latest album. For me it’s not my favourite, a bit samey but some tracks I love already - maybe it will be a grower!

SocksAndTheCity · 20/04/2024 16:59

I don't think I'd have ever heard of her if it wasn't for MN! I like pop music, but I mostly listen to my own playlists which are generally older stuff and I don't watch much TV.

I could neither name one of her songs nor describe what she looks like - if I walked past her in the street I would have no idea.

Who's Taylor Swift?

Someone who sews very fast.

Terraarts · 20/04/2024 16:21

Who's Taylor Swift?

Are all the search engines broken or did you mean to type that question into Google?

I've noticed a number of posts today from people who seemed to have missed the invention of a way to find the answer everything within a fraction of a second

You posted your question and hour ago and I don't think you've had an answer yet, seems an inefficient way to increase knowledge

TulipCat · 20/04/2024 17:28

The whole "airing the dirty linen of her break ups" is getting rather tedious. I wish she'd find another angle to write about as her actual music is nice enough.
