To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

Thank you for your service

WonderingSole · 03/03/2024 14:03

tbh I wasn't phased about knowing that.

Hermittrismegistus · 03/03/2024 14:07

YANBU.

Now do 'Ambivalent'. It's always misused on here.

pensione · 03/03/2024 14:07

I don’t understand why people are so triggered by typos and spag errors.

I saw someone call a pedestal a ‘pedistool’ on a thread the other day. It made me smile and I scrolled on. The idea of correcting the poster or starting a thread didn’t occur to me.

Please do a bought/brought masterclass.

Frumpitydoo · 03/03/2024 14:10

Pedestal is often peddlestool on Facebook. I always hoot!

daisychain01 · 03/03/2024 14:10

Poor SPAG is depressing imho. Texting and SM speak has trashed the English language.

I wouldn't come on a thread and take the piss out of someone who'd written Chester Draws or "we should of ..." but it's very sad that people nowadays don't seem to care about written language.

stealthninjamum · 03/03/2024 14:12

Thanks op, I didn’t know that.

Of course now I will get irrationally annoyed as I’ll start to notice it!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/03/2024 14:12

This happens with load of different words. People who don't read a great deal don't always see the words they hear and use written down. They don't realise that one spelling is not always interchangeable just because two words sound phonetically the same.

It's not the worst crime in the literacy world.

People saying 'generally' when they mean genuinely. Or 'literally' when they mean metaphorically. Or spelling definitely as defiantly. Or saying 'then' when they mean than. Or saying 'I'm basing this off of' when they mean 'I'm basing this on.' Those are much more irksome to me than an easily made mistake like the one you describe.

RaraRachael · 03/03/2024 14:12

To me that sort of thing is very annoying as I'm old and was taught about correct spelling and grammar but nowadays anything seems to go.
I taught for many years and lots of teachers nowadays struggle with spelling and grammar so it's unlikely that it will go back to how it was,

Aquamarine1029 · 03/03/2024 14:13

Posters "loosing their minds" over the "looser" they are dating is what does me in.

KimberleyClark · 03/03/2024 14:14

You don’t flaunt rules, you flout them. Flaunting would be if you were wearing them on a t shirt or something.

SheepAndSword · 03/03/2024 14:16

@pensione my fingers were itching a bit over a poster complaining about 'steel' rather than 'steal' but I restrained myself! I know it's bad form.

Shutting · 03/03/2024 14:17

‘Divide and concur’ amused me recently. It felt like a happy ending after angry conflict.

‘I am not adverse to’ is my current bugbear.

WhateverMate · 03/03/2024 14:17

WonderingSole · 03/03/2024 14:03

Perfect response! 👏👏😂😂

BendingSpoons · 03/03/2024 14:17

'Please bear with me' is the one I always struggle with. People say 'well it's nothing to do with being naked (bare)' but it's nothing to do with animals either.

I avoid writing faze as I'm never too sure on that either!

I read a thread in my local FB group where someone was asking about parking in a colder sack! 😂😂

Someone else pointed it out on that thread but the poster stuck to her guns!

SoftFluffySocks · 03/03/2024 14:21

Please please explain the difference between effect and affect. I have tried to understand the difference many times and I still don't get it.

In my defence I do know:
two, too and to
They're, their and there
Then and than
Know and no

Shutting · 03/03/2024 14:22

I always feel like putting a disclaimer on these threads saying that I know it’s wanky to be a SPAG pedant, but I cannot resist posts like this. I feel like I have found my people.

Someone wrote recently that they were at the "beckon call" of a friend.

SheepAndSword · 03/03/2024 14:25

@Shutting 🤣

Can I add people who use ‘consistent’ instead of ‘persistent’ or ‘constant’?
