To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

'Please bear with me' is the one I always struggle with. People say 'well it's nothing to do with being naked (bare)' but it's nothing to do with animals either.

I avoid writing faze as I'm never too sure on that either!

It's Bear With Me, not Bare.

Bear as a verb, nothing to do with ursine animals (bears). It means to carry, to endure, to support.

Like the right to bear arms (carry guns, not sunbathe sleeveless).
Or to weight-bear, to be a pall-bearer, to bear a burden, to bear witness to someone's testimony.
You are asking someone to endure the burden of patience/tolerance, to put up with you while you do whatever it is you need to do before you can assist them.

I feel like posters on MN are happy to correct/be corrected about all sorts of things, but when spelling is corrected people are absolutely horrified and I don’t understand why it’s so much more of a big deal than anything else.

Because its often done in an arse hole way
If somebody starts a thread distressed about something and their spelling and Grammar isn't the best
It's a bit twatty for posters to be pointing it out
I do however love it when posters are being twats and pointing out mistakes, and then make their own mistakes 🤣

Sharkknife · 03/03/2024 16:19

The one that annoys me is mortified instead of horrified. Completely different meaning!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/03/2024 16:20

Yes, I know.

It's a common mistake though - and I think people's meaning is obvious .

A damp squid was my favourite one recently.

That’s fair (fare/fayre) 😃

Februaryfeels · 03/03/2024 16:28

A poster had a go at me last week because I was nonplussed and needing an explanation for whatever it was

Apparently being nonplussed meant that I shouldn't be asking for clarification, even though I was totally confused.

Anyotherdude · 03/03/2024 16:34

@TwigletsAndRadishes
”I've been speaking to various estates a lot in the last week or so and I have lost count of the number of myselfs and yourselfs that have assaulted my ears. Is it a prerequisite of becoming an estate agent that you must be a 22 year old man in overly tight trousers and pointy shoes who is pathologically incapable of using the simple words 'me' and 'you' when talking to clients?”
That description had me in fits of giggles - brilliant observation 🤣

Yes I see this often.

Ha ha that is so funny I was actually about to post about both the things you just mentioned!

I am distracted by your username 🤢😂

This makes sense now thank you!

Five pages and no mention of wrack & rack or flack & flak?

LouLaBear23 · 03/03/2024 16:37

The best one I’ve seen (although not on here) is ‘walaa’ instead of ‘voilà’. Seems to be a bit of a thing on SM with teens and those in their 20s.

daisychain01 · 03/03/2024 14:10

Poor SPAG is depressing imho. Texting and SM speak has trashed the English language.

I wouldn't come on a thread and take the piss out of someone who'd written Chester Draws or "we should of ..." but it's very sad that people nowadays don't seem to care about written language.

Agreed.

I have pointed out retch versus wretch recently. In a reasonably non-wanky way I think.

That should be illegal 😱

"it's time to rest your wary eyes," either spoken or spelt in that manner really gets me 🤣 It's WEARY.

But you also get people who are 'weary' of upsetting someone.

Anyotherdude · 03/03/2024 16:50

Well, you didn’t disappoint me! Some fabulous responses - thank you all for adding some fun to the day😁

Had of gone.

Sigh.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/03/2024 16:57

Using 'decimate' to mean completely destroy seems quite common now even on ... Radio 4. It's original meaning was to remove one in 10 hence the 'deci' part but maybe the newer meaning has become acceptable.

Sorry. I changed it yesterday for the Christian Horner texts leak thread. On which, appropriately enough, my main criticism of the whole sorry affair was the shockingly bad SPaG in his texts 😀.”Tell me what your wearing” etc

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 03/03/2024 17:01

"Affect" is a noun in psychotherapy...

I do notice spelling errors, and sometimes they can be a bit jarring if you do care about written language. I get that not everyone necessarily is good at it/bothered about it and on Mumsnet I focus on the content rather than parsing the spelling and grammar. I do get very annoyed when someone posts something incredibly sad/stressful in search of help and the first comment is someone correcting their spelling.

Having said that, phase/faze has annoyed me for YEARS and it is nice to have a safe space for those feelings so thank you for this thread!

Anyotherdude · 03/03/2024 17:02

I just thought of another one: J K Rowling’s use, in Harry Potter, of the term “toerag”, to mean scum of the earth.
This is actually a Naval term “Tow rag” that describes the rag towed on a rope by a ship, and used before the advent of toilet roll, by the sailors on the ship.
It was then adopted into common parlance to describe people regarded as low-life in the early 20th Century…

Marian Keyes talks about "casting nasturtiums" in one of her books. Can't remember which one but I still haven't quite sorted out in my mind whether she genuinely thinks it's "nasturtiums" rather than "aspersions" (surely not?) or whether it's just one of those quirky turns of phrase that she comes up with so often that she just doesn't notice herself doing it!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 03/03/2024 17:05

PS I love Marian Keyes
