To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

If you want to be really pedantic, it's SPaG, not SPAG.

Is it? Why? The words spelling and grammar are not proper nouns and don't require capitalisation any more than the word and does. It's common to capitalise acronyms, even if it's not always strictly necessary. It just indicates that it is an acronym, to save confusion.

Using 'decimate' to mean completely destroy seems quite common now even on ... Radio 4. It's original meaning was to remove one in 10 hence the 'deci' part but maybe the newer meaning has become acceptable.

Oh, how my dad ranted about this when I was a kid. God knows why. It's not like we talked about decimation a lot. But somehow I really remember how agitated he got about its incorrect use

Can’t believe we’re three pages in and nobody has mentioned writing “que” instead of “queue”

Except it doesn't! If you click on the link you can see the whole page. It's just the last bit that's cut off in the window shown on the thread.

In that case I'm going to stick to my pedantry and say that the word was given a needless capital letter 🙃 stamps foot in a hump

StrongandNorthern · 03/03/2024 17:09

You are not alone!
The 'fazed'/'phased' thing drives me mad.

This happens with load of different words. People who don't read a great deal don't always see the words they hear and use written down. They don't realise that one spelling is not always interchangeable just because two words sound phonetically the same.

It's not the worst crime in the literacy world.

People saying 'generally' when they mean genuinely. Or 'literally' when they mean metaphorically. Or spelling definitely as defiantly. Or saying 'then' when they mean than. Or saying 'I'm basing this off of' when they mean 'I'm basing this on.' Those are much more irksome to me than an easily made mistake like the one you describe.

not in anyway questioning your opinion as to the degree of irksomeness (made up word!) of people's poor use of words, but is there really any excuse in the 21st century with built-in SPAG checkers on every app and software package for people to spell things incorrectly or use words erroneously.

Did nobody tell them the reason why there's a little red or blue wiggly line under words, and all they need to do is click and it gives the right word or phrase.

it just goes to show that despite all the advancements in technology, people don't want or care enough, to learn the right way or educate themselves.

maybe it also shows how the basics of education is somehow not landing successfully with students nowadays.

DuckonaBike · 03/03/2024 17:10

I get particularly infuriated by people writing ‘discrete’ when they mean ‘discreet’. ‘Discrete’ has a completely different meaning!

And don’t get me started on disinterested…

Spell checking software doesn’t tell you if you’ve used a real word in an incorrect way and grammar checkers frequently make mistakes, flagging correct usage as incorrect and offering incorrect corrections. And AI relies on usage in the wild rather than correctness, so tools like ChatGPT will reinforce incorrect usage, further reinforcing these types on mistakes.

I don’t know about every app but the spell-checker on my iPhone and iPad is atrocious. It’s not intuitive at all and often auto-corrects correct words into words that make no sense in the context.

And Outlook often doesn’t pick up on errors unless you run the spell-checker and even then it’s not infallible.

And actually, no one’s infallible, which is what MN’s spag pedants don’t seem to understand and why they sound so smug and superior. They think others are impressed by them when they’re really not.

Hernameisdeborah · 03/03/2024 17:19

Not unreasonable at all, it really annoys me as well to see phase when faze should be used!

FuzzyPuffling · 03/03/2024 17:20

And if you ever point out an error, the response is always "but language evolves".

Which gets rite up my knows.

Actually, having written that, I am reminded of Nigel Molesworth, as any fule nos.

Sorry. I changed it yesterday for the Christian Horner texts leak thread. On which, appropriately enough, my main criticism of the whole sorry affair was the shockingly bad SPaG in his texts 😀.”Tell me what your wearing” etc

Edited

Yes, that hurt my eyes too!

Disinterested versus uninterested 😫😫😫 I don’t think that battle will ever be won 😐

FictionalCharacter · 03/03/2024 17:25

Yanbu, but an awful lot of people on MN get extremely defensive about incorrect spelling and grammar. I don't understand why people want to carry on writing incorrectly instead of learning.

Garlicking · 03/03/2024 17:27

Nah, mate. I can't speak for every pedant on the thread but, as PPs have already posted, it's just a relief to get it out there, have a bit of a moan and a bit of a laugh. These errors pick at my mind but it's pointless to correct every one as they occur. A thread like this is a opportunity to join in a group ARGHHH!

Maybe somebody should be impressed by my familiarity with the English language 😂 I doubt anyone is, though, and I couldn't care less.

~ Oh, and it is couldn't care less, not could. Unless you mean you do care.

Maybe because they come on MN for a bit of chat, not to learn. Threads like these are fine but correcting people on their spag is tedious.

Well mumsnet is a chat forum not and English lesson
And it's often done in a very twatty way .

Why would anyone be impressed by your familiarity with the English language? That in itself is smug.

Trust me, there’s hundreds of people on MN who can spell better than you.

As to your second point: I doubt it. A couple of dozen, perhaps.

The one that annoys me is “trooper” instead of “trouper”. But I don’t point out errors, seems bad form to me.
