To point out that the word is “faze” and not “phase” in this context?

Anyotherdude · 03/03/2024 13:57

I’ve been reading so many threads where someone writes about being “phased” or “not phased” about something.
it was bothering me so much that I checked to see if it was me that was getting it wrong.
I didn’t.
To faze is to disturb, bother, or embarrass, but a phase is a stage or step, so you can be phased into a role, but if you’re not bothered by something, it doesn’t faze you!

‘Divide and concur’ amused me recently. It felt like a happy ending after angry conflict.

‘I am not adverse to’ is my current bugbear.

Ha ha that is so funny I was actually about to post about both the things you just mentioned!

@SoftFluffySocks affect is mainly used as a verb, whereas effect is mainly used as a noun.

I love that this has a typo and says every Tim instead of time :)

Can we move on to nouns that are both singular and plural?
Goods and Services. A term used in economics by serious people.
Recently on radio talk of a 'good' and a service. I shouted at the radio.

I worked in Asia for a long time. It’s very common amongst English speakers in Hong Kong and Singapore (where it is an official language alongside others) to talk about “a staff” and “staffs”. They are talking about employees rather than long wooden poles, eg “I spoke to the staff who was guarding the door” or “there were 5 staffs in attendance”. The looks I got when I said they had to change their report to say “member of staff” for the singular if it was going to be read outside Asia…

Except it doesn't! If you click on the link you can see the whole page. It's just the last bit that's cut off in the window shown on the thread.

I do get a bit annoyed when posters don’t put the extra “e” on a female person who is engaged, fiancé vs fiancée. I guess fewer people learn French at school these days?

BrightHarvestMoon · 03/03/2024 15:40

I. DO. NOT. CARE!

I've been speaking to various estates a lot in the last week or so and I have lost count of the number of myselfs and yourselfs that have assaulted my ears. Is it a prerequisite of becoming an estate agent that you must be a 22 year old man in overly tight trousers and pointy shoes who is pathologically incapable of using the simple words 'me' and 'you' when talking to clients?

My other bugbear is 'mental health' as in 'she is suffering from mental health' or 'I can't work at the moment because I've got mental health.'

You have poor mental health or good mental health. You can have mental health problems, but you can't just have 'mental health' unless, of course, you are meaning to say that your mental state is healthy as opposed to unhealthy. This drives me completely potty. I don't understand why it's so hard for people to grasp this simple thing.

Akin to patients saying “I have blood pressure” but none of us correct this, obviously, we all know what they mean. Probably not a SPAG error either.

Outside work bad SPAG really gets my goat and that includes my errors so I like thread like this one to learn from.

LakeTiticaca · 03/03/2024 15:43

Yes you are correct OP but most people will either:

A)get what the person means

B)doesn't really give a shit 🤣🤣

Changed18 · 03/03/2024 15:46

Not a typo, but I’m not keen on the use of ‘express’ instead of ‘said’. Eg She expressed that she was not able to attend the meeting.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/03/2024 14:12

This happens with load of different words. People who don't read a great deal don't always see the words they hear and use written down. They don't realise that one spelling is not always interchangeable just because two words sound phonetically the same.

It's not the worst crime in the literacy world.

People saying 'generally' when they mean genuinely. Or 'literally' when they mean metaphorically. Or spelling definitely as defiantly. Or saying 'then' when they mean than. Or saying 'I'm basing this off of' when they mean 'I'm basing this on.' Those are much more irksome to me than an easily made mistake like the one you describe.

when you say literally but mean metaphorically isn’t it sort of a metaphor for emphasis?

I am literally so hungry I could eat a horse.

I did hear someone say pacific instead of specific though. That did make my cringe but that’s when people talk rather than write. My writing isn’t good please don’t check mine!

Papyrophile · 03/03/2024 15:48

Fellow clansfolk.... I salute and embrace you all.

Another fan of the divide and concur boo-boo.

BIWI · 03/03/2024 15:49

I think the sad thing is that so many people just don't care.

I know we're on a forum, and we're not exactly writing grand academic theses - and mistakes will be made. That's completely normal (and almost guaranteed when you're posting on a thread about SPAG!). But it's the use of poor grammar, like 'should of' etc and spelling, like 'chester draws', that gives away generally low levels of literacy and education. Which is a huge shame.

I know when my DC were at school I was often appalled by the fact that they didn't correct spelling in work that wasn't their English work.

That said, I've been reading here for so long now, that recently I genuinely had to check the correct spelling of 'hear hear'. Or is it 'here here' ... Grin

ASighMadeOfStone · 03/03/2024 15:10

Yet poor punctuation clearly doesn't bother you. Or the last remaining vestige of the subjunctive. Or relative pronouns. Or tense and verb cohesion in a text ("I didn't" referring back to your original verb of "was getting")

Interesting, isn't it.

I love it when a pedant gets out-pedanted 😂

I need some rest bite from SPAG errors.

I cracked up at this as I hate it too 🤣🤣🤣

pensione · 03/03/2024 15:52

You are such a pendant, OP.

Oneearringlost · 03/03/2024 15:52

Shutting · 03/03/2024 14:35

And in mental health we talk about ‘affect’ being the visible expression of someone’s mood. Eg ‘flattened affect’. So it can also be a noun! But that’s niche.

The emphasis on the word 'affect', in this context, is in the 'a', rather than on the 'ffect', where the word is used most commonly.
It is niche...and it only adds to the confusion!

takemeawayagain · 03/03/2024 15:52

Shutting · 03/03/2024 14:56

The thing is, these errors are not victimless crimes. Each time I read, ‘would of’, a minute is shaved off my life expectancy.

I always think it's quite interesting that 'would have' became 'would 'av' which became 'would 'uv' which then became 'would of'.

RockyRogue1001 · 03/03/2024 15:55

BendingSpoons · 03/03/2024 14:17

'Please bear with me' is the one I always struggle with. People say 'well it's nothing to do with being naked (bare)' but it's nothing to do with animals either.

I avoid writing faze as I'm never too sure on that either!

This is something I say a lot, but never write down because I'm never sure which one it is and both look wrong 😳

I don't want to be a grammar twat, but on mn
Queue when cue is meant
And curb instead of kerb (on parking threads) make my teeth itch.
I never say anything though.

I saw non chalant on a thread earlier, which made me smile

But any of these could be auto correct or fat fingers - both of which happen to me regularly 🤷‍♀️

RaraRachael · 03/03/2024 15:57

An Instagrammer was describing her new puppy as a "little worldwind".
She also had to tidy the "draws" in her daughter's bedroom.

HelloCiao · 03/03/2024 15:59

If you want to be really pedantic, it's SPaG, not SPAG.

Someone wrote recently that they were at the "beckon call" of a friend.

On a thread a while back somebody exclaimed Gawd and Bennet .

StaunchMomma · 03/03/2024 16:00

Do you feel better now, babes? 😂
